Thank you SO much for doing this guy! I remember way back in the Titanium Megatron review mentioning him. :D A few things... 1. Inside the cab, there's some molded seats and a steering wheel. It's not Alternators-level, but it's there. 2. The entire top assembly can pop off, revealing a hole inside the head can _easily_ slide into. You're right that there's no excuse for it. 3. The gun can actually tab into a screwhole on the forearm. It actually works pretty well. Anyway, again, thank you for showing how good he really is.
One thing I thought was cool that I heard from somewhere is the Ironhide got his paint job because he was a big Optimus Prime fan. I thought he was a decent toy, got myself Jetfire just so he'd have someone to combine with.
Energon was dumb. Any character could combine with practically every other character, and yet nine out of ten fights, the combined guy just shot a gun from behind cover. A gun that was never really portrayed as being more powerful that the guns wielded by the individual components. This meant that combining effectively halved the heroes' firepower. Just sayin'.
On Ironhide and Downshift, the Hasbro tan colour is more anime accurate than the Takara silver. The same cannot be said however for the stripes on Armada Wheeljack...
MICROmor by the way looks like japanese hate those battery gimmicks because my roadbuster W and my skyfire both have the battery pack doors jammed and removed electronics, but the molding is still there.... oh and all the head turret can pull out, i's actually on a peg, so you can display him without the killer boombox if you want.
Man, looking back on this guy... We were actually pretty spoiled to look at one case of slightly visible (it has a visor to at least cover the face) head and say "That's a terrible toy! Crucify it at once!" Nowadays we live in a world where Legion Class Movie Starscream is a thing that exists. Kind of puts things into perspective, doesn't it?
NickonAquaMagna Its not a loss of budget. Its no increase. Plastic got more and more expensive with time, and then more money got spent on the toys engineering(I'm looking at you movie toys) so they cut casts where they could. Less paint, less plastic, and now less engineering.
what interests me is just how many insignias there have been over the years (i just got generations road buster and found out there's a separate insignia for the wreckers)
Honestly, if it wasn't for my nostalgia towards the Energon cartoon, of which I have a VHS tape of, I wouldn't be trying to get this figure. If also might be because the only Energon Autobots that I have are the Skyblast repaint as Air Raid and the white Landmine.
I remember this toy so well. It was the first Transformer I ever owned. Unfortunately, after trying to split his legs for his combiner mode, I ended up breaking off one of the legs just above the knee joint. Duct tape fixed it... temporarily. With that, and losing parts due to age, I've since lost the toy. Every other Transformer I've ever owned since then has survived much longer and fared far better.
Well This is the largest evidence of inflation one could ever see Look at this 20 dollar voyager Compared to that 20 dollar voyager Ultra Magnus Compared to a 20 dollar _deluxe_ today
I liked this toy as a kid, it was a nice chunky truck and made a good pair of legs. The plastic tolerances on mine were not so good though. the ball joints became loose and one of the shoulder pads broke at the joint.
The tan, as TJ said, does make him unique. It's just a shame that no one cares about the Energon character...and that's a good thing. Energon was mutiny.
I used to have this toy as a kid. 2004. My first transformer ever. My mom sold it when I grew older because I had slowly lost interest and was more into Star Wars. I regret it. I have one now, but it’s the green one and not even the cool Japan one with the energon axe. Just a green redeco with the Star on the hood and everything the original came with. I miss my childhood version in blue. I just have to settle for the green for now though.
I love him in Energon he's a big dork like me! Thanks for doing this review! It's amazing. Can you do Energon Megatron? Ironhide personally I believe is the best figure in the Energon toyline. It's so unique and has a big charm to it.
While the figures got rather small, I think it more depends on details and part sizes. Armada or Energon for example had rather big parts, which allows for a lot of hollow space, while things like the movie series have a lot more tiny parts with more details and complicated transforms.
Honestly the visible head never really bothered me. The way I saw it, the character in the official fiction didn't have a reason to hide the fact that he was a robot, so visible head was no big deal. I've always been more lenient on visible robot parts if there existed reasons why the figure didn't have to be a "robot in disguise". Prime Megs has a visible head? It's a Cybertronian mode, not meant for disguise, I'm okay with it. Cybertron Prime trying to be an Earth truck with robot hands for bumpers? Not enough to make the toy horrible, but it still bothered me. There are limits of course. Cybertron Metroplex get's no passes.
@@frankspick7544 With Metroplex it's not so much that the robot parts are visible, but that he barely looks like a vehicle. Like he doesn't so much transform as curl up in a fetal position. Take away the treads and his weapon and you can't tell what he supposed to be.
Just to let you know you did miss a step on pants mode at the wrists of the shirt modes hands there is a hinge for you to fold down the hands after you fold down the feet to help *hide* them.

I think when coming to the shortcomings of figures like these, you have to think a little more. This is one of the most show accurate Energon figures, next to Cliffjumper and Landmine. His head being completely visible in vehicle mode is canon and is actually a feature IN Energon! He actively talked like that and flipped his helmet up to talk to... K̶̨͚̲͒̉̕i̵̥̹͖̐̑c̷͔̩̀̒̓k̸̨̻̩̎͌͂e̸̫̾̍r̶͈̘̦̄̆͝ . His combiner modes are actually pretty good as well. When he's the lower half, his kibble is pretty bad. However I can completely excuse it just because its show accurate. And with the way this figure is designed, you can kinda cheat an ankle pivot.
Energon was a bizarre time for Transformers. The cartoon was...well. I don't think I can really say anything there that hasn't already been said by...just about every TF fan ever. I think we all get it at this point. Some of the toys were alright, some...not so much. The whole "Powerlinx" gimmick I just...always thought was really dumb, and only really worked with a few combinations otherwise it just looks goofy as hell.
I once had this toy when it was new, and I will agree, for all it's faults he is a good ironhideas for the price he brought up, yeah I agree I want THAT size of 20 dollar figure back, I think back then voyagers were like $15 if I remember correctly
2000-2009 those were the good days for transformers engineering. Titans return and TFP first edition some good engineering (besides the "pretooling") and power of the prime looks good but hasbro might not get back to that level of engenering becuse of the buget cut.
Hey TJ, long time viewer here. Love your stuff. Do you think you can review BotCon Rapido? He's one of my holy grails, and I'm a huge G2 fan. Would love to see it, thanks!
Hey TJ, just wondering because I had a weird thought... do you have the second version of Energon Ironhide? He makes a really good lower half and a really good upper half... imagine combining Ironhide with himself and getting double the 'Hide o.O

Maybe they just didn't want to hide the face because it was part of that top rotating part. Also didn't movie 1 Megatron have a way bigger issue with the head ? Also isn't it possible to put the launcher a bit above the hands ? on his blue arm parts there is a hole in the middle which looks like it would fit. Hmm... I can see why you like it. Besides people that may not have enjoyed the character (or sound effects =P), I wonder if it may be a matter of missed opportunities; little things that start to add up. Not to "Plastic Addict" status but to when you encounter them over and over again... ...what do I mean? Okay, the obvious one is the head. *Moving on* there is the guns being unable to unpeg and be held; seems like it should have been a given. Another - and I know this sounds like such a nitpick, but the torso mode could really have used the primary mode arms to add a little more to it. I went to check out images of it attached to other figures, and especially when combined with a re-release of itself (in different colors) it was like "Wow, if the torso was just a bit longer you could mistake it for a single figure with your typical clunky (down low) robot mode. Or of course had the legs done something similar, again added the needed length to its trunk while also presenting less kibble. Of course if I go "full otaku" I'd either get into my "Combiner Wars is what Energon should have been (sans story elements)" rant, but one step before that is we've got a figure where the gimmicks are so well externalized... why not go the full distance: imagine if the entire "red" portion was able to be removed. Perhaps even turning Ironhide into another Headmaster-by-way-of-Minicon? Other figures took similar assemblies and turned them into decent "clunky guns"... which trump clunky fanny pack kibble. ;)
