Dining tables can be a bit like guitars. A handmade guitar similar to the quality of a mass produced can cost 10-20 times as much. And a large, custom made, solid timber dining table (8+ seats) can typically cost AU$8,000 - AU$15,000+ Other factors which can further increase costs are: Premium woods (e.g., Blackbutt, Tasmanian Oak, Jarrah, Walnut). Intricate designs or finishes. Handcrafted details or unique joinery, etc. Hand finishing is one example of how costs can escalate if it's not being done in a factory with a machine than can mass produce repetitive tasks and you're doing it manually by hand. Take sanding for instance. Sanding time can typically be: 10-16 hours for a very large table with significant imperfections, or when you're aiming for a professional-grade finish. And if you're hand-sanding a live-edge slab table, it could take even longer due to uneven surfaces and edges. Typical time estimate for a 4 layer sanding job. 1st layer. Coarse Sanding (60-80 grit): For sanding rough or reclaimed wood, 3-5 hours to remove deep imperfections. 2nd layer. Medium Sanding (120-150 grit): For smoothing out the surface and preparing it for fine sanding: 2-4 hours. 3rd layer. For fine Sanding (220-320 grit): Achieving a smooth surface, removing all visible scratches: 3-5 hours. 4th layer. Extra Fine Sanding (400+ grit): For perfectionists aiming for a silky finish: 1-2 hours. Total maximum sanding time: 10-16 hours for a very large table with significant imperfections or when aiming for a professional-grade finish. Now at $40k, I think you're probably right in that there's been a bit of profiteering happening here, but not by the amounts you're suggesting. If a craftsman's brother-in-law was the purchasing officer at Parliament House let's say, their mate's rates would be maybe two to three times the regular price. And you'll find that's a pretty standard mark-up for all government managed contracts, whether you're building a rail line or buying a dining table.
I don’t think that table looks anywhere near as valuable as the one Prime Minister Keating bought for Kirribilli, I think it was teak and imported. Keating got a lot of flack for that one, but I do think it was a tad more elegant and probably increased in value as it aged. This new one looks more like an IKEA Buy-Back model.
Problem is the military creates specs for their toilet seats that no manufacturer of toilet seats can meet. So some company has to build molds or machinery and make a seat to the same tolerances that a rocket motor has to meet, and they have to offset all those startup costs by charging a stupid amount of money for the seats themselves.
Looks like something my wife would have bought at Goodwill for half price or, $20 US

As someone who works with timber daily this is not worth $40k and needs investigating.... and the fact it won't be shows where we the people stand in the Australian Governments eyes ...
No it's from conflict timber in Africa so it's very expensive timber that you're not supposed to cut down more than likely and that's why there is a high cost but I saw the exact same one on eBay for 10k

I would like to see what exactly the previous "uncomfortable" table looked like. It can't have been any worse than this. Might've been nicer, actually.

You crazy if you think it hits even a thousand. My table is pure wood with amazing carvings and design and worth around 4k. That doesnt come close to my dining table. They got robbed.

Timber? In a state that banned logging? Surely not.
It's pretty obvious that someone somewhere pocketed $38,500 from the cost of that table. 🧐
It went to the committee who had to study what table they should purchase.
That's called "Creative Accounting" and it's more like someone pocketed $39,500.00....

$800 more like it.
K$40? For that? Sounds like yet another Victorian Labor spending/credit card f--- up!
I would estimate $1000 for the dining table and chairs & $39,000 into someone's Swiss bank account.
Fark no. Give them a couple of milk crates and a trestle table..lol.
Could have saved a fortune by shopping at Ikea.
