RESURRECTING A 1934 Plymouth HOT ROD that was Parked in the '70s

  • We dig my father-in-law's high school hot rod out of his basement and get it running again. Watch as we surprise him by getting it running after it sat untouched for 30 years. Then, we take it another step further by getting it back on the road. We love this type of story on Hot Rod Hoarders because it proves that old cars are more than just metal--they're like family! Follow along as we revive this old hot rod and give it the attention it deserves.

I don't know you, but son, you are an old sole to understand the value of this car in his life. You didn't chop it up, or sell it once you got it running to make a quick buck, you did the right thing. My hat is off to you sir! Enjoy this car forever.

I know the feeling. I started saving for my first car at the age of 13 with my paper route. At the age of 15 (1967) I found a running '55 Ford for $85.00, bought it and during the next year (until I was 16 and able to drive) I had time to dress it up with new metallic paint job, new interior and a set of chrome wheels. It was the nicest '55 Ford around and I got lots of compliments driving it around.

    PlyMaLinkCheFord... Well done!
I understand the tears of joy. Sometimes I shed them when I crank up some of my barn cars and exercise them. I even have my Dad's old propane trucks... I love them all and every rattle and sound. Yes, each one of my old tractors, trucks, pickups, and cars; I know what they are doing before they do it. Drive straight as an arrow, like I drove it in its day.
    Take care from Oklahoma,
    Mike and Vee

Curious, how many of can what I called the hot rod? To give you a hint, it was a straight axle Ford 1/2 ton with a Chevy motor, Buick 200R4, Dodge van locker rear, and said van's gas tank in the back of the bed. We called her the "MopaCheBuFord". She would pull the front up on the street. At a prepped track, we had to use welded up garbage dumpster wheels on the rear bumper. LoL, what we used to do with one man's junk.

I just watched the hidden in the basement for 30 years. Boy when Charles heard you fire that thing up and the emotion that came from him made me cry. Just last Friday I acquired my best friend"s 87 Grand Prix. it's been sitting for 5 years and the garage. It's going to need some love. Him and I was building it before he got heart disease and didn't recover from the surgery. It was his dream car. A lifetime diabetic he was. And one of the best men I have ever had beside me. But I can feel that emotion for something that a lot of people don't understand and will never get. Rock on my brother. Keep that beautiful car between the ditches. From PA to Georgia with love

I love the story behind the car. That's what cars are all about to me. And yes definitely goosebumps when he heard it start up. Great job!!

Nice family Heirloom Treasure. Keep it the way it was built in the early 60s. It is a true survivor.

I think this is a big part of why people love old hot rods. It's not just a bunch of metal, there's a human connection and a human history to all of them, as much about the people who build them as it is about the car. It was very touching to see your father in law's reaction to hearing his old car fire up again. I imagine how he must've felt when he first came back from war. The car that had waited for him, that his parents kept for his safe return, must've been a great help in adjusting back to civilian life again.

Yes, I would imagine having this car (and his '63 Impala) waiting for him at home was a huge help. But he has expressed how tough it was to come back home to a not-so warm welcome by the general public. Those guys had it rough and didn't receive the recognition they deserved.
