  • Adam Savage visits Wētā Workshop's electronics lab where Richard Taylor walks him through the design and prototyping of the larger-than-life animatronic character visitors meet in the Wētā Workshop Unleashed experience. Adam goes hands-on in controlling the lively facial expressions of this robot and learns how this animatronic is a different engineering challenge than the ones created for film.

Genius.. WW do some amazing stuff..
Missed my Weta Workshop job opportunity by two days. I used to make chain armour and had some hoods for sale in a history store.. Richard was hunting for weapon and armour smiths in Oz when LotR was about to start production.. saw my work.. and tried to sign me up.. Owners of the store desperately tried to get hold of me, but I was camping out of phone range..
By the time I had returned, they were back in NZ and the Number I had been left with was no longer working..
Have never been camping since. :D

    Hey Adam & Crew!
I've been a major fan of all the content you've been pushing out, and have a question for you:
When looking for high quality mics for recording in the shop, are there any that stick out to you? It's very difficult for me to justify getting a nice clip on mic if I plan to use it in the dusty shop.
If you could let me know or point me in the right direction I'd GREATLY appreciate it, and I'm sure others will too!
Keep posting great content, thank you!

As much as I love the idea of living longer, one thing that I wonder about is whether we will socially stagnate by people living longer. Consider the old adage, "science advances one funeral at a time." As Max Planck so eloquently said of this problem in science, it's "another instance of the fact that the future lies with the youth." Looking across our population as a whole, by and large it is younger generations pushing changes and introducing and adopting innovative ideas, and it's the older generations often pushing back against the adoption of those ideas. If people are living longer, we end up creating a larger percentage of the population as much older and a much smaller percentage of youth pushing changes, making critical mass for change much harder to achieve. As much as I would love to live a greatly extended lifespan (in good health of course), I do wonder about this problem, and it's one that is rarely discussed in these discussions on living longer.

What astounds me about this interview is how open and honest Richard is about the work they are doing. I have been in engineering for some years and it's often very hard for management to hold on to that when the public is around.

@Mr.dudebro Nah dude it's not a curse, but the problem is it doesn't necessarily help you solve problems. In my experience in all aspects of life it comes down to what you know, i.e. the more variety of stuff you can study the better, and 2nd, who you know, never know one chance meeting an individual could be your ticket to something.
