This is according to Mr. Mao Keo Pich Chanmony, Director of Darasakor International Airport, who confirmed to Kampuchea Thmey that if there is no change, Darasakor Airport in Koh Kong Province will launch the first step for domestic flights on August 8, 2024.
Mr. Mao Keo Pich Chanmony said that the company has proposed to launch domestic flights as a first step and has already received the approval of the Prime Minister.
He said that recently, the technical team inspected the possibility as well as the infrastructure at Darasakor Airport for domestic flights.
According to Mao Keo Pich Chanmony, domestic flights do not have the same high technical requirements as international flights, while the International Civil Aviation Legal Procedures Company is also preparing, which will be completed soon.
Mr. Mao Keo Pich Chanmony also highlighted the progress of infrastructure development at Darasakor Airport, which has three major sections, in which the runway and airport are 100% completed. Landing and radio communication systems are 100% complete. The terminal has reached about 90 percent and is nearing completion. According to a civil aviation official, Kampuchea Thmey informed that the test launch of Darasakor Airport is another good positive sign for the aviation sector in Cambodia.
Sin Chanserivutha, Secretary of State and spokesman for Civil Aviation, told Kampuchea Thmey that Darasakor Airport Development Company had proposed the launch of the first phase of domestic flights as the infrastructure construction process was almost 100% complete.
Mr. Sin Chanserivutha emphasized that according to the inspection from Darasakor Airport, there are sufficient technical conditions to operate domestic flights. However, after the first step in the domestic flight operation, the company has to continue the procedure by requesting the necessary certification from the civil aviation in order to be able to open the medium, large and international flights.
Under the investment by the Chinese company Union Development Group (UDG), Darasakor Airport has repeatedly delayed the completion of the project, which was originally scheduled to open in 2021.
Union Development Group (UDG) has received a land concession from the government to invest more than $ 300 million in Darasakor Airport in Botum Sakor District, Koh Kong Province.
The new airport in the coastal province has a runway of 3,200 meters long and 60 meters wide, capable of accommodating A-350-900 and Boeing 777 aircraft.
According to civil aviation officials, the number of air passengers entering and leaving Cambodia as of the end of May 2024 was about 2.6 million. Compared to the last two months (May and April), the number of air tourists decreased by 8%.
