All the zeon mobile suits and armor actually do play a role in the background of why they lost the war. While zeon kept using money for these various specialized weapons, as cool and unique as they are, they just kept moving from one project to the next wasted time and money. As for the Earth Federation they came out with a standardized mass produced mobile suit, the GM, that while not the best was good enough and just went with that to beat out Zeon. And by the end of the anime I think there were even scenes where zeon were sending out Mobile suits without parts or with makeshift parts, showing they were just exhausted. I'm probably leaving more out, but that's what I remember.
Kinda parallels WW2 Germany making really advanced limited production tanks and the like (Tiger II, looking at you) while the Allies had a standardized set of tanks that they'd retrofit with new equipment as needed.

Cause like, I have (never been in the military, but I’ve known people who have), and I’ve read extensively about soldiers in various conflicts, and the 08th MS team cast are easily one of the most accurate depictions of soldiers in fiction, especially soldiers in the vietnam/gulf war era that the series is based off of
Yea Nuclear Gundams, it's not like someone survived it- *eyes Kira* Well he doesn't count, main character Jesus survived a DOUBLE nuclear explosion! And then again! Kira is the best in not dying but we all think he died but didn't and get a stronger Gundam every time. Amuro and Char ARE the best... Because they are. Just neat.

So, Pat's stance on war is that soldiers aren't allowed to be human beings, they should only be mindless killing machines. Not only is that dumb, and potentially harmful, but it also takes away from the story if all, or even most, of the characters are only concerned with doing war the best they can. There's no personality there.
I think his beef is that while soldiers can have personality, he's exasperated by the absolutely stupid decisions that are pretty much treasonous if done in real life military

Technically the Federation started the war. Duke Zeon said, bye, we're leaving. And gets assassinated. Zabie takes over and becomes more militent. The Federation stages a gas attack (the one Shiro remembered) on one of their own colonies supposedly perpetrated the Zeon forces (you don't find out until 0083 it was actually a Federation False-flag operation) as a reason to establish martial law on the colonies, the war starts out with Zeon quickly gaining the upper hand due to superior mobile suit technology, the Federation fires some nukes at one of the colonies and then Zeon says fuck you and drops said colony on Australia and royally fucks over a huge chunk of the world. And it wrecks everything so badly both agree in Antarctica to no longer use nuclear weapons or colony drops to avoid mutual destruction and will fight it out more conventionally.
I think I only like Zeon because the writers of the show want me to like the Federation. And I HATE being told who to root for. More so, I hate being told to root for anyone other than the more aggrieved party. The creator went, "OH, we can't have people siding with people who look like real soldiers, let's have Zeon commit the super attrocity". Also I hate the design of Gundams, the White Base, and all the Fed uniforms. They don't look like a real armed force should look, they look like dinky children going on a flipping field trip.

Sieg Zeon isn't about Char, in the strictest sense; it's the same generic rap trope of the guy doing the song constantly bragging about how amazing he allegedly is. Gundam ZZ starts out terrible, but I ended up liking it better overall than Zeta. Zeta had a lot of really bad lulls whereas ZZ just kept getting better as it went on, and I ended up liking the cast a whole lot more. The mecha designs were pretty lame, though. I don't like the Double Zeta itself, and if you put the Bawoo, Re-GZ, ReGelg, and ZSSA side-by-side, I wouldn't be able to tell them apart. It's telling that the final two fights were both fought against variations of the Qubeley from Zeta.
My only problem with Gundam is that is just a bummer, like when I think Star Wars I think cool space adventures! When I think Gundam I think war conflict death and politics [in space!]

Theres plenty of positive art with great profound merit but an examination of the darker aspects of life can have enormous personal and societal value especially nowadays when the voice of power is sickeningly patronising twee.
