What's more astonishing is he only had two fingers to play with on the fret board due to a fire in his caravan. He got depressed and never played for a long time afterwards, before reinventing how to play with only his index and middle fingers as you can clearly see. Thats what made his style unique and what created this 'gypsy style' guitar sound and why it's basically down to this man. He could play with those two fingers what many can't play with four! Genius!

also worth noting that the inventor of heavy metal guitarist tony lommi had a accident in where he lost the tips of his fingers in a factory, he got pretty depressed, the factory boss showed him this video of django reinhardt playing with 2 fingers to give him hope that its not the end, thus he invented a new style of playing that became known as heavy metal

The scariest part about 0:41 isn't just how fast it is: it's how clean it is. The dude's essentially sliding up the fretboard to the next note each time, yet his picking's as clean as a whistle, each note perfectly clear. Unreal.

saki saki Miming to pre-records was not uncommon in those days, especially in the big musicals, but no, that is not the case here - and there was no "video" back then, only film.

Exactly what I was thinking ! Django often played very fast chromatic runs, and I just don't understand how he was able to quickly slide on a string with one finger(that's the easy part!) and manage to pick each fret with total accuracy ! Just like you said !

When he came to France my grandparents were really young…. They had snuck out during German occupation and went to see him . Something happened and they ended up hiding out in his trailer…. They spent the whole night hanging out with him while he played music for them so whenever I go to the graveyard to clean grave and put new flowers ,I play it for them because I know It was such a great memory in such hard times ….❤ miss them so much .

A burned up hand; played with two fingers mainly. Re-invented jazz with a European flare. Composed many great tunes. One of the best instrumentalists in the history of music. Don't know if it was Beck or Hendrix who said; "If there's a lick; Django played it." Django Reinhardt was one of the most amazing human beings who ever lived.

Also, behind Django is his younger brother Joseph (also known as Nin Nin). Joseph would go to Django's gigs in place of him when he didn't feel like going, and played with Django in the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, and he went on to become a well respected gypsy jazz guitar player in his own right. If you listen to his recordings, you can so clearly tell the influence his older brother had on his playing. So cool!
Edited because I mistakenly called him Babik at first instead of Joseph. Babik was the name of Django's son, who ironically also went on to become a jazz guitarist!

The thing that stands out for me with Django was that after his injury, he had enough determination and love for the guitar to come back as strong as previously. Study his fretting hand and it's formed into a diminished chord shape, which he did play from time to time. The man was just a great guitarist and who knows what he would have achieved had he lived another twenty or thirty years.

I still pick up a few bucks here and there playing for parties and the like. But, amazingly, I never heard of Django Reinhardt until I was asked to perform with a guitarist who played in the GR style.Intrigued, I went on the Internet and so I could see Reinhardt perform and was truly impressed with his two-finger picking skills. Noticed that smirk myself. It's like he said "Django is from outer space-the rest of us should just give up" Perhaps the speed came from his having started on violin, a fretless instrument, himself. He was't positioning himself with frets, he was perfectly measuring space as the distance between the notes became smaller. Genius.

Django is truly phenomenal...it's almost like he's saying through his execution that none of you have no legitimate excuse not to play music, and esp. guitar...you're only limited by your imagination...Tony Iommi had a couple of his fretting-hand fingers nipped off, but Django inspired him to forge on and to compensate...I had a great uncle who played violin and he swore that he needed 10 more fingers on his fretting hand...of course I'm exaggerating when I say that may be a liability...when I watch Eric Clapton and even Jimi Hendrix play, you can see the economy of the fretting hand, but yet able to produce this proliferation of notes...if you can figure out the "why" of anything, then you'll create or figure out the "how".
