In the first couple minutes of the video you had the shot towards the stern when you put her in gear and those CAT engines let out a little bit of smoke, that was a really good shot with the background. I also really enjoy your explanations of pushing the barge through the wheel wash of another tug. Excellent narration and explanations Tim

Hi Tim, In the UK we say Touch wood and if none's available we touch our head.
Evergreen Holdings also own Eva Air and are partners in Taiwan High Speed Rail,
I worked on the construction of the THSR rail line. All my flights were with Eva Air, I lived in a gated high rise complex and a number of cabin crew lived there also. Soon we were recognizing one another, now my tickets were economy already upgraded to premium, airmiles would upgrade them higher or being recognized would also get an upgrade. I would drive to the airport and leave my car at an off airport parking lot and get bused in, on my return I'd chat with crew and give them a lift home. Party/dinner invite would then follow and lets say it was a great 4 years.
Fubon bank was also a partner and we got free banking and airport lounge cards with them, so travel was sorted.
Good luck with you move Tim, stay safe.

Nice explanation of tractor vs conventional tugs. It always surprises me how many comments there are on TH-cam complaining that professionals are using the wrong equipment. They never even think of the cost side of the cost-benefit analysis. The absolute best-case response to "But you should be using a tractor tug!" is "Sure, if somebody replaced our current tug with a tractor tug for free, we'd be all over it, but nobody's gonna do that and have you seen how much a new tug costs?" And you seem to be saying that the answer is actually "Well, even if somebody offered to replace our current tug with a tractor tug for free, we'd probably still say no because the extra maintenance costs would still make that a bad business decision."

I'm very late in getting to this video - just got back from a trip. I wanted to mention - I'm not far from the Washburn & Doughty yard in East Boothbay, where the tractor tugs are made. I attended the launch of the new tractor tug Dennis Moran last week. If you are interested, I can send you some pictures I took of the launching - as I had a great spot, about 20' to the side of the ways. Just let me know, if you want.

Speaking of tractor tugs etc, the INDEPENDENCE, which is often docked at Mass Maritime on Cape Cod Canal was built for assisting ships docking at the LNG terminal out in Massachusetts Bay. It has a Voith-Schneider drive. Very maneuverable, but also deep draft with no real keel to protect it.
INDEPENDENCE is often the escort boat for barges and tankers transiting the Canal, as you probably know. One night it got a little far out of the channel near Cleveland Ledge and ran that drive aground. It was out of service for months. I think it was repaired in Fairhaven, but not sure.
Looking forward to seeing your new ports down south. CUOTO!

In the channel between Port Newark and Port Elizabeth, there is an outflow, sometimes only noticeable after rain. If you go to the absolute end of that channel, closest to the airport, there was a stream or creek that flowed from the area of the airport toward the east, into that channel. Back in about 1989, we used that end of the channel to hang a line out between ship's, as that berth was rarely used, and, at that time, no one chased us away from the berth. After a good rain, you could see there was an outflow, even when the tide was rising.

@@TimBatSea Great that you put so much effort into producing content of this caliber. Back in my school days, we marine engineering students would take it upon ourselves to visit calling ships in Portland Harbor. If we were lucky, they might be shifting oil docks and we'd get to ride along while they maneuvered and answered bells. That was our version of TH-cam. Your content is pure gold for fledgling mariners (especially the "rope chokers", lol). Looking forward to future content. CUOTO, Cap'.

Hey Tim! Long time viewer first time commenter... I work on the rivers and have heard towboaters use the phase "top out" and have always wondered about the origins of the term. I've always heard it used talking about flipping the boat and tow unit around. Is that how you use it, you said it in this video? Any guesses about where it comes from, or might be shortened from? Can we ask the channel's collective mind if you don't know? Finally, thanks for your great channel!

Nock on wood .. in dutch is “ afkloppen” or “afkloppen op hout” yes we nock or tap.
It has to be done on unvarnished wood. Preferably apple, nut or oak wood.
This is developed form the time people believed in all kinds of spiritual things. Christianity was not seen or heard from yet.
The nock on wood was to make sure you didn’t upset the Forrest spirits.
