For decades I have been a collector of high-end Pre/Postwar Lionel, but every now and then, I buy something from the latest catalog to continue to support them such as a Vision Line boxcar, accessory, etc. They did a really nice job on this. Just as an FYI, the box is not some random box art. That is the actual cover of Lionel's 1947 catalog. The 675 and 151 semaphore were new in 1947. The 152 crossing gate and 45N gateman were carryovers from 1940-42. It was so nice to listen to someone doing a normal positive review. Very hard to find...most people complain about this, too expensive, it didn't have that, should have had that, etc. Keep your positive frequency, it will carry you far.
You can currently purchase the locomotive by itself in three road names. Santa Fe, Pennsylvania, and an army one. They're $330. Who knows how long they'll be available for though, cause the replacements will be released soon when the 2025 catalog comes out.
@falcondragonslayer They're not likely going to dump back to back SKUs in the first volume. Potentially something for 2025 Vol 2, but I wouldn't say this early. Especially when it was up in the air how well these would be recieved.
Hi, thanks for the review. Was excited about this also when saw in catalog. After seeing how awesome it was, reached out to my local shop were sold out. However they sent email yesterday had one back in, of course I jumped right on it - will be picking up tomorrow.
This is honestly really cool, something I don’t say often about modern day Lionel. I own a original 2035 which is basically the same thing as the 675 so this is really cool to see. Great video and great job by Lionel!
At the moment, they're likely sticking with the basic LC board. I'd like to see a revision made to the speed control, otherwise it's been a great engine so far.
@DarrenMcallister-rf4oe It's a winner! My hope is people will see this video and pull the trigger on picking one up, show Lionel that there's a genuine interest in bringing more of these to market.
Lionel definitely did a bang up job on this set! Looks just like my Postwar originals. My only complaint - this set is screaming for the recording Lionel used in the scale 746 J and the LionChief 2+ 726 Berkshire of the postwar air whistle.
I agree with the opinion on the whistle choice, but I have to admit... ...If I was 11 years old again, I'd probably be begging for this set for Xmas. (I ended up with a 1997 JCPenney NYC 4-4-2 pocket rocket set back then. Still have it, still runs like it just came out of the box.)
@VioletLeader Nothing wrong with one of the old Atlantic sets! I certainly would have been in the same boat as a kid, this is just a fun setup. I'm hoping by getting word out about this set, we'll see enough interest driven across the board to get more like it.
On choice of whistles, you would think in this day of digital recording, Lionel would reproduce the air whistle of the 6466WX tender. Any thoughts. If you can record custom crew talk, you should be able to record a custom postwar whistle. Unless some dumb copywright law prohibits it. You can't have everything I guess. But an A for effort on their part. A great locomotive train set for Boomers who want a little piece of their childhood past. Happy Holidays.
@junelipinski2025 It's been done for the LC 2.0 726 Berk and the scale 746 J, so the audio is definently within their sound library. Just one of those calls that slipped through the cracks, otherwise it's just room for improvement on the next project. Thanks for watching!
@TobyPasman If they didn't lock the full consist in the GG1 set, I would have had the entire lineup on order. I've been chasing full scale Madison cars since the J3A anniversary set from the early 2000s.
@BlueCometDude Technically just a different 3 chime if you get into the weeds with it. Air whistle would have been the most ideal, but this is pleasant enough while running. It could have been far worse of a whistle selection.
I have 2 of the post war originals and this is great. If they wanted to make it closer to the original the single dome Sunoco car is wrong. It should have been a baby ruth boxcar (shorty). Next best choice would have been a 3 dome Sunoco car. Also, an aluminum smoke stack would have been another cool option with both of mine have, but it was a one year only and not very prototypical. Another option would have been to correct the front pony truck to use 4 lead wheels rather than 2 like the original. There was a mod for the post war models to use truck parts from a Royal Flyer (I think) American Flyer locomotive and put them in the front. It looks really good but you lose O27 compatibility. Since you are running fastrack with O36 it would not be an issue. They could have also shortened the drawbar to the tender since the gap doesn't need to be that large. I usually do that surgery on the tender side to make it look better and still run on O36 or larger curves. All and all, I approve and applaud Lionel on this retro release with all new tooling to make it like the original. Hopefully, they will use this locomotive in more sets
A very nice set! Just last year i got an older style Pennsylvania Flyer set which has a 4-4-2 locomotive and got the expansion freight set earlier this year. It all makes for a fun set up, even if it is all simple. Sometimes thw most fun things on life can be simple, just like an old fashioned train set with a transformer and track. If I could grab this set, I'd nab it up in a heartbeat! Im currently putting money aside for the North Pole Central Hot Cocoa train, piggy back trailers and flatbed, and NPC caboose. I just got the Egg Nog Milk Car, and i love it!
Fortunately, there's a pile of Postwar cars on the market that can slot in for cheap, and look great being towed behind. I've already mixed in my original Sunoco tank + PRR gon that came with my old 675, they fit right in.
If Lionel is starting to recreate the old Post-War sets, I wouldn’t mind seeing them recreate the old Model 2026 2-6-2 Prairie type due to having one, that I display on a shelf, that belonged to my late maternal Grandfather.
@ I didn’t know that but I was referring to recreating the two train sets the 2026 had been in between 1948-1949 and 1951-53 where you had a freight set with a gondola, tanker and caboose; or 3 passenger cars. I just looked up the 2002 catalogs and the used one that’s similar. For a pastel blue engine numbered 2018, but was similar to the later 2-6-4 version of the 2026.
For the entry level train, I'm honestly surprised Lionel didn't go full plastic with the included cars. Redoing the internal 675 from the ground up, fitting modern gears/motor and a nod to the Century Club?! Wow! This is going to surprise parents and grandparents for their young ones getting this set for the holidays. A little bit of a shame though it wasn't advertised as a postwar quality set, and more of a 'It looks like it did 80 years ago.' And also a lack of the 'E-Whistle' the non-Century Club Berk got. I was gonna bet this would also get it, but oh well. You could record a real one through the custom playback features if needed.
That is a very nice set. I like the remake of the 675 and they need to bring back some of the other steam locomotives, from the post-war era. The cars are fine updates of the post-war versions. The tender shell is one that dates back to the beginning of the post-war era. It was included in a number of sets, notably the Electronic Set and had various numbers, the 2466WX/6466WX being the most common. Many had metal railings, I believe through 1950 and then the railings were eliminated. This one seems to ride a bit high, which makes it look ungainly. The caboose is a plastic version of the post-war 2457/72, right down to the lettering and numbers on the side. Either way, Lionel knocked it out of the park, on this one. An excellent video, as always.
I'm really hoping that in the future, Lionel brings back more of their postwar locomotives and rolling stock like this with the Lionchief and Bluetooth tech. I'm just hoping they bring back the Turbine they had in 2022 Big Book, cause' I can't seem to find it anywhere. 😅
@@certifiedtrainboy That one unfortunately never made it to the production stage. If sales of this set and other items prove decent, it likely won't be the last we see of similar toolings.
I was one of those who hated to see production stop on the Conventional Classics line. This is encouraging, but wish they'd bring back some other classic cataloged sets. And by that I mean transformer control, not these remotes.
Too bad you couldn't be at the club this past Saturday to see my Postwar Era setup running. I think the guys had more fun with it then their own trains. 😆
My local hobby shop (Toy City in Keene, NH) didn't order any!!!! What were they thinking? Had to go to Amazon. As time has gone on I've missed those days more and more. So I just had to get this set. Brings back so many good memories. My Christmas gift to myself. (LOVE they added the engineer and fireman. The original just had an empty cab.)

@@SCL3618 Sadly, mine won't even move. Everything's set up correctly, locomotive went in reverse for about two inches, then just sat there. No response in either direction after that. Very disappointing. Looks like no train for Christmas after all.

The metal trucks is a nice touch! They could of saved some money and passed it down to the buyer if they did add an air whistle instead of a full electronics package! It be a great nod to the postwar era. Great set!
@PainesvilleRailfans Unfortunately a tradition air whistle wouldn't have been compatible with the current tech/ ops setup. If anything it would make the price an oddity, since you're using more and different parts compared to common electronics. I'd much rather have the remote ability than traditional controls under the hood. But the digital recording would have been a good compromise. Thanks for watching!
@davidstrainsandlego It's worth picking up! I've had fun alternating this and the original 675 out for track time, it's wild seeing how far the model has come.
@@rshackelford4445 This one fits the bill nicely! There are a few lower priced options out there, but this hits the mark between pricing and what you get out of the set.
@@CorysModelRailway There should still be a few floating around, but I would try to lock one down if possible. Maybe get a local shop that does layaway/payment plans.
So, I know you said it was a Hancock 3-Chime whistle, but do you have any idea what locomotive it came off of? (Or maybe an audio file of it) I’m gonna see if I can make it into a 3-Part whistle for Trainz
@@jamesdenny4734 It certainly has a can motor, unsure on the flywheel. If it's there, it's very small and doesn't have a ton of effect. The internal speed control settings do most of the work.
@OfficialMilkyFoxChannel This isn't exactly the set that will strive for perfect prototype replication...The caboose tooling is the closest one they have on tap with the active models.
The pilot on this new version sits much higher than the old version. Pandering to all this modern technology with a supposed postwar look ... very simple ... the original is better.
@markkilgore938 The pilot is a different design altogether compared to my 1947 release. I've got no issues with the new build, both iterations have been just as fun to run. The Postwar model is cheaper and more widespread at this stage, so hobbyists have the choice of going that way if desired, or giving this new avenue a look.
I got the set for xmas and not impressed. The space between locomotive and tender is alot bigger than its postwar twin. My tanker car kept uncoupling also, and had blemishes in the paint. Locomotive has trouble thru my fastrack switch.
@tomshannon7513 The space is going to be bigger, since it's using a longer common component to accommodate current electronic setup. The gap doesn't bother me, it's been a great engine to have cruising around the apartment since filming.
@obvious2886 The font size and style is different compared to the original rubber/heat stamps these wore, otherwise the bodyshell is identical, minus weight of the whistle mechanism + handrail.
@steveww1507 It's a necessity of using a common component to make the connections. Given that it's a toy train, the distance doesn't bother me compared to the same thing on a scale piece.
Now this is a set that only Lionel could do. It is so nice to see a postwar styled tooling in a train set!
I'm glad to see it make a comeback! Minus the couplers being a bit finicky during filming, this is an absolute winner of a set for them.
I know. This should be a normal locomotive in Lionel’s roster, like the FT, the Berkshire, or the new Tier 4.

I'd much rather have the remote ability than traditional controls under the hood. But the digital recording would have been a good compromise.
Thanks for watching!
Nice video, likes from me !!
@@ЛЬВИНИ Thanks for watching!
Really hoping to pick this up, would love to see how it compares to my 1947 2025
@davidstrainsandlego It's worth picking up! I've had fun alternating this and the original 675 out for track time, it's wild seeing how far the model has come.
Ive been looking for a starter set to get into the lionchief stuff and think this might be it.
@@rshackelford4445 This one fits the bill nicely! There are a few lower priced options out there, but this hits the mark between pricing and what you get out of the set.
This is cool
Hoping i can swing to get this set by july, pending its still in stock and not a limited run.
@@CorysModelRailway There should still be a few floating around, but I would try to lock one down if possible. Maybe get a local shop that does layaway/payment plans.
@SCL3618 ill see what I can do. Lil mom n pop shop just down the road. Plus I'd rather do business with a small shop then a big box store anyways.
@@CorysModelRailway They'll appreciate the business!
@SCL3618 exactly! And I go home feeling good that maybe my purchase put supper on a family's table that night.
@SCL3618 Lil update, I just ordered the set this evening. My local shop was not gonna get any in so I ordered from Amazon.
I might haft to buy one but one thing I would really like them to re do is a modern Lionel 2026 set the 2-6-2 or 2-6-4 version
So, I know you said it was a Hancock 3-Chime whistle, but do you have any idea what locomotive it came off of? (Or maybe an audio file of it) I’m gonna see if I can make it into a 3-Part whistle for Trainz
@VK90Productions This recording has been bounced around their Big Boy, Challenger etc for a few years now.
@ ohhh okay, thank you man!
New subscriber! Really like it I wanna get it
@@MrToby844 Thanks for checking out the video!
Nice now you can run your o gauge engines on the fastrack
@@conraillock666 Just a few, O-36 doesn't bode the best for larger scale equipment.
I wonder if Lionel will start selling those reproduction postwar trucks as spares
Is this set LionChief 2.0? Can the engine run with a conventional transformer?
The whistle is either from big boy or the living legend
@UNION_PACIFIC_4141 Lionel has had the whistle in their files from before the 4014 resto.
@SCL3618 oh also I have watched all your go scale Derailment vids, and they are amazing!
Don't get me tempted to start 3 rail O gauge. 🤣
@@azuma892 It's worth diving down the rabbit hole!
Say, did you this locomotive had a can motor w/flywheel?
@@jamesdenny4734 It certainly has a can motor, unsure on the flywheel. If it's there, it's very small and doesn't have a ton of effect. The internal speed control settings do most of the work.
Say, is this loco scale because those drivers look really huge nit to be a scale size locomotive!? 😮
I could’ve sworn 675 was a 6-8-6 turbine
Turbines were 671, 681, 682, 2020.
It should have a different whistle.
It would be nice, but the 3 chime does grown on you after a bit of running.
Inaccurate PRR J28
What's up with the anemic chuffing sounds from these starter sets ? All else seems pretty good, just that is horrible.
@@MR_P03 Railsounds RC is a barebones chip with a basic speaker, so it's very pared down compared to the better sound trims.
Oh man I’m sorry but that tender just looks so bad, I own the original locomotive and it doesn’t look that abd
@obvious2886
The font size and style is different compared to the original rubber/heat stamps these wore, otherwise the bodyshell is identical, minus weight of the whistle mechanism + handrail.
Looks more like a scout tender.
the draw bar is way too long
@steveww1507 It's a necessity of using a common component to make the connections.
Given that it's a toy train, the distance doesn't bother me compared to the same thing on a scale piece.
Jan 3,2025🎉🎉.....Any of Theses Prairie starter sets left??
@@christoffervandyke8523 Check your local shops or preferred online retailer.
The shop in NC I purchased this through has 3 on the shelf ready to go.
Oh ok....I will....thank you....looks like a cool train set
