CLAAS sets path for autonomous tractors

CLAAS is the latest equipment manufacturer to share its plans to market autonomous tractors.
At Agritechnica in Hanover, Germany, CLAAS showcased an Xerion autonomy-enabled prototype tractor and a two-step process to automation. In this interview, CLAAS head of technology management, Christoph Molitor, tells RealAgriculture's Shaun Haney that the company's first step will be a "co-pilot" tractor with automated tasks and an on-board operator. The company will then follow with a fully autonomous vehicle that can be monitored via a cloud computer.
Molitor says CLAAS has no specific development timetable for its autonomous tractors. He says the tractors will help reduce labour needs and manage peak production times, but the main focus is to eliminate monotonous work and give farmers more time to focus on production efficiency.
