YOU ARE SIMPLY VERY GOOD AT WHAT YOU ARE DOING. I STRAT TO LISTEN TO YOU RECENTLY AND I LOVE YOU . THANK'S . I'M NON NATIVE SPEAKER AND I HAVE TO TELL YOU THAT YOU DO, AS AN ENGLISH COACH, VERY RELAXING METHOD IN YOUR TEACHING . YOU ARE A BEAUTIFUL PERSON INSIDE ( I'M SURE) AND FROM THE OUTSIDE. I HAVE TO SAY THANKS AND KEEP TEACHING . I DON'T KNOW IF YOU WILL FACE THIS MY COMMENT, BUT I FELT THAT I HAVE TO SAY THESE WORDS TO YOU AND TO YOUR SUBSCRIBERS.
I just found this channel and I need to tell you Stephanie many many thanks for your efforts to do this for us❤🙏 I have already seen plenty of contents about the "don't say that.." and yeah it's true, totally confusing to learn a language if I concentrate on the "don't" things. I completely understand if someone needs an IELTS or any other document about the result but usually most of the people don't talk with complicated expressions and words (except in some specific area, example the science). If someone does he will get in trouble and he needs to explain about his speech a lot. ☺️ I think there is one main goal of the language: transport the information the shortest time what we can. I wish you Stephanie the best, I appreciate again your help and support 🌞👋🙏
I love the way you explain things with example sentences,You should make more videos like that, it was really helpful. Because there are so many people on TH-cam spreading the wrong information, which is so confusing specially for someone who just started learning English.
For me she has a very good pronouciation. At last I've found someone that speaks clearly and cristal. I'm Brazilian and now I'm following this channel.
Dear Stephanie, I'm studying English for about 3 years to move to Canada, for me you are the Best teacher because you have a good pronunciation, intonation and vocabulary, I never finded anybody like you, I was able to improve my English because I watched your channel. I'm very happy for your help, your are the Best...
In my opinion, native speakers seem to be using very every other sentence and honestly I don't know why they should not use it. Stephanie your english channel is the VERY best and I look forward to your next video VERY VERY much! Happy holidays and amazing new year to you and your family!
I too agree with you. It's up to the speaker not to be boring, using the same word over and over. Speaking is a sort of art. So we have to be tactical to attract the listener using various tactics. This video is Super Excellent.
Hi, Stephanie, how are you? Saudações from brazil. I've been learning English for almost 3 years, and throughout this period I've really stopped translating English words to Portuguese, so i can speak in English spontaneously. For the last days I've been following you on TH-cam and i can understand you clearly, you speak VERY well 👍👍
This was a very good explanation about this word. Thank you very much. I totally hate those "don't say x if you want to sound native" videos. Every English speakers use basic words. In fact, most advance vocabulary isn't used by natives in daily life. Mainly their regional slang. I think idioms and some sayings can be good to learn but, unless you need that advance vocabulary because of your job or something, you don't need to know them. I like it when they say "don't use this word all the time, learn some alternatives". That sounds so much better because it's never bad to learn synonyms. Actually, when natives use advance vocabulary in my native language I get impressed because I'm not used to saying that word or because I didn't know the word before.
I think the audio quality turned out VERY good. I think it was worth all your effort. About the video content, I think it's so important to explain this because people that it's learning a language, usually feel insecure and when someone say "don't say this, don't say that" they tend to feel fear of speak anything.
Hi, Stefy. What about those words that replace very + adjective, for example: I'm very tired > I'm exhausted. You are very intelligent > You are brilliant.
Yupiiiiii.......Wow, You came back. great! I missed you a lots... I will be watched all of your videos. I think you are a really good teacher, and you have that accent everybody here want to hear. Thank you for coming back. I am very very happy...😍😍😍
I think the main point of using alternative words for ''very'' as a synonym is because in the speaking part of any International exam, epically for IELTS, the examiners use to measure your ability on using vocabulary by check how many you repeat usual words for answering their questions, and the more you use different words the more score that you will get.
I wonder why we must expand some vocabularies instead of always saying “very” and we have some examples-“very hot” means “scorching”; “very cold” means “freezing” or “chilling”; “very interesting” means “compelling”; “very huge” means “giant”; “very colorful” means “vibrant”; “very angry” means “furious”. Thank you VERY much for the VERY interesting topic. 🙏
Dear Madam Teacher, thank YOU incredibly much for your amazing, marvellous, great job and effort for us(Students) during year 2022! I really appreciate it! Thank you very much for the video. I think the idea behind "not using very" is not to stay silent, but to not get stuck on that word. The videos I've seen about "not using very" are for those who are in their comfort zone saying Very all the time (like me) instead of learning synonyms in order to increasing vocabulary. I'd like to use Very because I choose to, not because it's the only option I ve
I've been watching your videos for more than 2 years now, your channel is definitely my favorite english learning youtube channel. I love your way of teaching, you get straight to the point and you keep the listener engaged. I absolutely would LOVE to be a part of the fluency breakthrough challnge in the future when i get the chance. Keep up the good work (this is kinda off subject but I've been wanting to say this, you have very beautiful eyes)
I've seen that content too: videos and images with the phrase "don't use very". It's mainly focused to English learners preparing for a certification exam, like IELTS or Cambridge. They promote the word "very" as low or basic English giving a long list of strong adjectives, which is good yet VERY confusing to learners. In fact, using strong adjectives in the incorrect context or situation can harm their score they want.
Hey Stefanie, I counted you say “very” 35 times, but in your voice it doesn’t sound repetitive at all. Thanks for the explanation about the different intensifiers. I love your facial expressions with the examples you used, this reminds to be more emotional when speaking American English to bring emphasis to my sentences. Happy New Years to you, your Team and your family. Keep up the great work! 🥳
Yes! Just keep in mind that facial expressions as you communicate should be natural and come from who and how you are. Otherwise it might look fake and/or forced. Also, just an extra tip, facial expressions and body language tend to match the rhythm of the speech, meaning we make our biggest movements during the words that are the MOST STRESSED in the phrase or sentence we are saying. I hope that helps :D
About the audio quality, I think it's really great. I'm not a kind of person that has a knowledge about audio/edition, but comparing with others videos in your channel, I think this one is really good. About the content, as always, very usefull. I understand the intentions when someone post something about "don't say that word". But I think they're complicating I little the life of someone that is learning english, because we just start to afraid of to put the word in our sentences. I believe that if the word exists you can use that, mainly when you don't have a huge vocabulary and need to communicate.
Agreed. I think we also want answers to be simple, very black and white. So, it's easier to say, SAY THIS, DON'T SAY THAT... and it's a lot harder to teach (and learn) when and why and how to communicate in different ways.
Exactly! And you gave in the video a bunch of examples using the word very, I mean, simple examples, which someone that doesn't have a huge vocabulary always could apply and also, more complex constructions, all of them with the word very.
During my learning process I’ve watched “don’t say very” videos on which the teachers actually want to present superlative vocabulary. The title “don’t say very” is a click bait to attract you into a very good content. It helped me and should help everyone if you just understand it is not a literal statement.
True, BUT... I've watched many of these videos, too. The issue isn't teaching synonyms because that's fine. The issue is these teachers usually preface their videos by saying "using very is a BAD speaking habit, it's lazy, it's too basic, and if you want to sound like a native speaker, if you want to sound intelligent and INTERESTING, you need to use other words like XYZ." That is the issue. They aren't talking about the "problem" in the correct way. And they are all saying the same thing, which shows they haven't put any critical thinking into their lesson beyond teaching a list of synonyms for a bunch of common phrases. And, sometimes, the synonyms they teach are also NOT accurate replacements for whatever phrase they are teaching. Anyhow, again, teaching vocab and synonyms is great... but it's come to my attention that I have many followers who are AFRAID of using the word "very" (due to the kind of content I'm describing) cause they don't want to sound unintelligent and, in my mind, that's worse than overusing the word "very" once in a while.
Hello, Stephanie! Thank you so very, extremely, incredibly, utterly, totally, absolutely, amazingly much! Merry (belated) Christmas and a Happy New Year! 😊
Omg look at the audio quality It's SO GOOD it feels like i'm listening to a podcast i swear, your hard work paid off 😂 you need to do a podcast and also you need to make a video comparing the old audio with the new and telling us how did you do it by yourself
Yeah when heard how good the audio sounded I was actually SCARED like omg did I really just do that? Will I be able to make it this good again?? Haha it was so worth it to learn!! And yes now I am READY to make that podcast!!
VERY good video as always, Stephanie. It's impressive to me how aware of your own native language you are. That's amazing. Now, for those still wondering about the word "very", just think about the equivalent in your language and its synonyms. Do you use "very" a lot more and more often than its synonyms? I personally do, and so do the native English speakers in their language. Just like "a lot" is used a lot and you could use "tons" and "loads" instead, that doesn't mean "a lot" is basic, but VERY important. That's it, haha!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, and....THANK YOU. Yes, I am sick of all these "new wave" social media focused "teachers" keep telling people to stop saying "very". I also am hearing the same from a lot of teachers in Thailand (my original home) telling students that "very" is boring. I am trying to dispel this warped idea by telling others that's it's OK to use "very" because native speakers use it all the time AND using these alternatives sometimes are NOT suitable to the context. One other thing I fear is that learners at a beginner level may simply substitute any of these words without realising it makes the sentence sounds ridiculous; for example [Very strong = durable] (I have seen a teacher gave out this word). So, "Superman is durable"? How ridiculous would that sound? Thank you for this video. So useful. I will share it on. Cheers.
Thank you for sharing it! If enough people see this video and videos like it, we can change the online “don’t say very” trend or, at the very least, help students think more critically about what they are learning from their “teachers”
I should say thank you so much for your all videos, because they helped me in many situations along my learning path, but in my real life i still don't use all of them in the practice)
I think the videos that tell us not to use "very" and use other alternatives are merely encouraging us to use the alternatives to prevent them from remaining in our passive vocabulary. Because the alternatives exist for a reason and the videos tell us to use them to add more color to our speech. There is nothing wrong with using "very" but it's good to know the alternatives too, to at least know about them when we encounter them.
Yes, and it’s good to have variety in your vocab. But what I personally don’t like is when they say you will sound “boring” if you use very lol. That’s ridiculous.
Thank you Steph You released this vedio on the second reminiscence of my best friend's death.yes very is a most common choice, however,it may be the weakest.
I completely agree with you ! No more word to add. On the other hand it’s easier for a french speaker because for example « very cute » is not really the same that « adorable », there is always a little bit difference. I think that all these publications about « very » are a sort of fashion, it will pass 😊
I appreciate this video, it is really interesting! You suggest a lot of very useful intensifiers and give us many tips about communication. Thank you so much! Greetings from São José dos Campos SP, Brasil.
Very is only to be replaced when you really want to emphasize that word. Otherwise if we just substitute very something with some other big words we are just going to end of sounding pompous.
Maybe, this stigma thing around the word ''very'' belongs to the formality of speaking unmonotonously. Which is good as long as you are writing an essay, but in real life, you can use it with confidence...
To me, Stephanie is the most down-to-earth of online English teachers.

More to come!! 💪🏼
I appreciate this video, it is really interesting! You suggest a lot of very useful intensifiers and give us many tips about communication. Thank you so much! Greetings from São José dos Campos SP, Brasil.
We enjoy a lot the classes of 1 hour of content, can you please share longer classes please? thanks you, you are the better.
Sure! Thank you for the feedback ♥️
👍 Wonderful English with excellent pronunciation.
I tend to replace "very" with "quite" or "rather" whenever I'm trying to decrease the number of the word "very" in my writings.
Very nice video!
