The way trains with multiple engines work, as explained and simplified in the film is that, the lead engine controls every other engine. If the lead engine is put in Notch 8, full throttle, then every other engine is full throttle. When you apply the _dynamic brakes_ on the lead engine, the brakes on every other engine operate as well. However, as our poor engineer wasn't able to properly engage the dynamic brakes, with engines 2-4 still being on their regular brakes, as the train gathers speed, the brakes burn up. It's like if you engaged the parking brake on your car while at highway speed _and_ keeping your foot to the floor.
