@@alexfarquharson3942 Catscratch and offering is literally all you need on Gau. I usually get Templar to cast Fire 2 for Ultros but literally catscrach saved my ass during the crane fight
the problem with catscratch is that it does not ignore defense. However, catscratch + offering + tempest is godlike, since catscratch's x4 damage actually gets applied to the windslash from tempest; and done 4 times means x16 wind damage to all enemies
Also templar and Ghost, which respectively lets you use Fira and Thundara early. The good thing about these two is that you can get them as soon as you get Gau.
He gets both the enemy he leaps on and the fight he returns on, factoring in original combatants. He will not return on back attacks, if you got a full party, pincers and if the enemy group has 6 mons, but you can Leap on these.
Yeah biggest tip is as soon as you get out of the serpent trench, backtrack to the veldt, aqua breath and gigavolt will do you well. Gau with a hero ring and running shoes can win most fights on the first turn if you know what to use.
I disagree with Gobbledygook because Vanish's random targeting can cast Vanish on the same person by chance and cancel itself out. I would also like to add: Hell's Rider (Venomist) - Good for Zozo Adamankary (Acid Rain) - Destroys Poison/Water weak groups Cirpius (Hastega) - Mass Haste + easy 46 MP with Runic for the MRF Guard Leader (Wind Slash) - Reliable Wind attack Hill Gigas (Magnitude 8) - High powered Earth attack Trillium (Bio) - High powered Poison attack till Great Malboro Chimera (Aqua Breath) - Replaces Anguiform with no weaknesses and all status immunity General (Cura) - Good for the Cave of the Sealed Gate Litwor Chicken (Quake) - Once you get Gaia Gears on everyone, mass heal for yourself and damage to enemies Destroyer (Reraise) - Reraise LONG before Phoenix Ninja (Water Scroll) - Best Water attack in the game Bomb (Blaze) - Reliable Fire attack that absorbs Fire for Ultima Weapon Wyvern or Briareus (Cyclonic) - Devastating cripple against non-deathproof mons Stray Cat or Gold Bear - High physical multiplier
Stray Cat and Guard Leader are also good World of Balance Rages. Cat Scratch does a ton of damage and the Wind Slash from Guard Leader is also useful in many scenarios
How do you use Gau. This is my first time playing this game and I have seen that gau is incredibly good but I don't even know how to use him or how to learn rages.
Basically : Gau can mimic most enemies you encouter during the game with the "Rage" command (not only he uses their attacks, but he also gets any status ailments they can naturally have, like "haste", "float" etc, Gau literally becomes the enemy/monster in question for the remainder of the fight, and you have no more control over him)... most of them are completely worthless, but some make Gau one of the deadliest, if not the deadliest character if the game, considering he can use some very hard hitting physical attacks, as well as some of the most powerful magic attacks, with no MP consumption ! For that you have to have encountered the enemy at least once and survived the encounter (meaning you can run away if it's a tough enemy, you just can't have your party dying). Then, you have to go with Gau in the area called "The Veldt", which is were you meet Gau at first (you can figure you're there thanks to the kind of tribal/arabic music). The Veldt is an area where most enemies you encounter in the game randomly roam after you faced them once and survived, so when walking in the Veldt, you can randomly encounter any enemy/set of enemies you met before... the most inoffensive as well as the most devastating, so be careful... note : you won't gain any XP from beating enemies in the Veldt, so you want to go there only to get Gau's "Rages". When you walk there with Gau, when you meet an interesting enemy from whom Gau haven't learned yet, don't kill him, and when it's Gau's turn, use his "Leap" command, Gau will disappear and the fight will be over... then keep walking/fighting in the Veldt until Gau comes back at the end of a fight, when he comes back, he will have learned the attacks from the enemies you were fighting when you used the "Leap" command, as well as from those you were fighting when he showed up again (but not from enemies you may have fought in between). To use it, when it's Gau's turn during a fight, use the "Rage" command, and select the monster you want him to mimic from the list. Notes : - In the early game, when you have to chose between the three scenarios, you may want to do Sabin's scenario in the last place, because this is where you meet Gau, so picking that scenario last will allow Gau to learn early "Rages" from the enemies you've encountered during Locke's and Terras's scenarios, otherwise, you have to wait until much later. - Unless you're a completionist, just don't go for every "Rages" of the game, there are like 250+ entries in the list, you'll waste time searching for them in the heat of the battle, so just go for the relevant ones, you can probably be deadly during the whole game with no more than 20 of them... for example, for physical damages, you'll get "Stray Cat" early in the game, and it will stay one of the most devastating attack for the whole game. - The game is old, 30 years, there are plenty of Gau guides out there, take a look at them ;)
I’m happy my snes cart of this game is perfect. I’m beating chrono trigger for the first time but beat ff6/3 many times since I played it the first year it came out. I never used Gau ever.

@@Hellwolf36 as a 37 year old man who played this game when he was 13 and still maintains it as my favorite game of all time, I have to now admit that there are some huge flaws. It is in many ways a broken game, and Gau is a broken character who could have been good, but just isn’t. If I wanted to spend time playing as broken characters who had potential but just fall short, I would play as Shadow or Setzer or Relm. Access to abilities that you can’t control, that you have to grind for in a really broken and not fun way, and for a character who’s stats are really bad… no thanks. I’ve come to realize that this game is a great story with loot based progression because levels don’t really matter… and that it’s all about using magic, and that all abilities basically use the magic stat, so just stay in the back row.

As a fan of Final Fantasy VI, Gau has the most potential
Stray cat. Always stray cat, nothing else. Cat scratch will do more damage then anything you have
For general leo rage. You have to leap on the retainer/yojimbo monster, then you will have shock on gau

You should try Stray Cat + Genji Gloves + Master Scroll + Impartisan in each hand
Stray cay is by far the best rage in game, high rage %. 5x physical hit
so these are more of his offensive magical elemental attacks.......there are others that are also powerful.
stray cat - sabin scenario - uses cat scratch 4x dmg.
Cirpius - Mt. Kolts - uses Hastega
Spritzer - Narshe Caves - uses blaze
Trillium - Mt. Kolts - uses Bio
Ghost - Phantom Forest - uses Thundara
Templar - Imperial Camp (Sabin Scenario) - uses Fira
Litwor Chicken - Vector World map - uses Quake
Destroyer - Magitek Factory - uses reraise
Bomb - Phantom Train - uses blaze
Unseelie - Outside South Figaro - uses shell? (gives Gau Haste)
Foper - South Figaro Cave - uses Death
Aspiran - Serpents Trench WoB - uses Giga Volt
Gorgias - Mt. Kolts (before sabin) - Uses snowstorm
Rafflesia rage on the WoR break the whole game lol

Cirpius (Hastega) - Mass Haste + easy 46 MP with Runic for the MRF
Guard Leader (Wind Slash) - Reliable Wind attack
Hill Gigas (Magnitude 8) - High powered Earth attack
Trillium (Bio) - High powered Poison attack till Great Malboro
Chimera (Aqua Breath) - Replaces Anguiform with no weaknesses and all status immunity
General (Cura) - Good for the Cave of the Sealed Gate
Litwor Chicken (Quake) - Once you get Gaia Gears on everyone, mass heal for yourself and damage to enemies

Ninja (Water Scroll) - Best Water attack in the game
Bomb (Blaze) - Reliable Fire attack that absorbs Fire for Ultima Weapon
Wyvern or Briareus (Cyclonic) - Devastating cripple against non-deathproof mons
