Excellent discussion, it has given answers to lots of my questions regarding iPhone’s regular Raw vs ProRaw. One of them still remained open: the resolution of the main camera, 24 mm canera is 48 megapixels. The resolution of a ProRaw file is 48 MP, but regular Raw only 12 MP. Why is that? The sensor data of 48 MP is there, why ony 12 MP is “given” by Apple when using standard Raw format? Thanks.
The best answer I can give you on this is that Apple has put the limitation on Bayer RAW files to 12MP right in iOS and only ProRAW files can go to the full 48MP. Since the limitation is right in the OS, third party camera app developers can’t tap into the API to get their apps to shoot the full 48. I’ve never heard anywhere what the reasoning is behind the limitation.
