This was the first TNG episode I saw years ago so I was very confused as I did not even know that MacDuff was an imposter until the end of the episode. Other than Picard, I do not think I knew any of the characters when I sat down to watch it so recognizing someone who was not supposed to be there was not easy.

Their response: "we currently don't have any plans for yada yada yada" Fast foward a couple years after I wrote that email..... Now coming, TNG Blu-Ray.... WITH bloopers. I feel like my idea WAS used. Sort of. If they just released a single DVD with various episodes, but it's all bloopers of that episode, it'd be perfect. They obviously still have the footage, but they don't want to release it. And I told them in the email, that they are literally sitting on a gold mine with these bloopers. The amount of money they stand to make by selling something like what I propose, and they say "oh we have no plans for that" Just boggles my mind.

Because being in command would have required a skillset to make it credible, and McDowell lacked it? You might be able to handwave it away as being the result of memory loss, but the incompetence on his part might have prompted the crew to either relieve him for cause or to disobey orders and contact higher authority for new orders. You'd have some of the same issues as first officer, but subordinates would be more capable of picking up the slack maybe?
He didn't have time to change anyone's outfits, it seemed to be a quick blast of amnesia and then everyone's awake, so... there would have been two of them with the full set of pips. I mean he could give himself FIVE pips i guess, and hope they don't remember how their rank works, but I imagine standard practice with these conmen is to keep a low profile, make it something the victims won't question. work within their ranks rather than appearing before a bunch of amnesiacs and giving them orders. This way it feels more like it was THEIR idea.

This does make you wish there had been an episode where Worf had been placed in command, and not just for part of an episode. Interestingly, he is as controlled, usually, as Spock was, though especially in early episodes his blood often over-ruled his brain.
My favorite outtake is in All Good Things when the crew is like fuck that blad headed prick, the Borg can have him and they just go about their day like nothing ever happened. That tactic confused the Borg so much that they retreated back to their own space never to be heard from again.
