The problem is that when you express the slightest concern about your privacy being erroded people start calling you a conspiracy theorist and talk about how “privacy is helping criminals”.

Czech Republic here. Well, in 1980, there were state security agents listening to conversations in pubs, some of our telephones were bugged, some of our homes were bugged, too. Some of your friends were informants. Then the communist dictatorship fell and we were glad to have our freedom again. And today? Today, people here happily pay for and subscribe to products and services that place microphones in their own homes and listen and record everything they say. Not even our recent history taught us the lesson. To say that our privacy has eroded is an understatement. Big thanks for trying to remind the people of what's important.

It was reported that it was Canadian bank CEOs who suggested to the present government
to freeze personal bank accounts of people involved in the Truckers protest in the winter of 2022.
I went to my bank, TD, to EXCHANGE funds from my bank account, to 20 toonies...to have on hand
for charity as there were many people "begging" at busy intersections in 22/23.
In addition to my bank card verification, I had to swipe my credit card, while the distraught teller appeared to be keying in info on multiple forms etc Once home, I phoned the bank and a manger picked up...something about money laundering ... that the teller must be new...
TD is now under US Justice Dept Investigation "focused on how Chinese drug traffickers allegedly used TD to launder at least US$653 million, and bribed TD employees to do so. TD did not directly confirm the report, but said its anti-money laundering defences had been deficient."

If we were in 1974, and instantly transported into 2024, we would be aghast at what is taking place.
Today, people just install, install, install, caring zero about to what they are agreeing.
    It is like using Alexa.
I have asked friends and family members:
"Would you eat in a restaurant, where they had microphones on the tables?"
Their answer is "Of course not."
But yet they put Alexa's microphone in their homes, listening to everything that is said, and likely making a record of everything that is said, and who said it (based on voice prints). Alexa is just the microphone and modem that sends your dialogs to Amazon's powerful servers that do the rest.
So even when I have explained that they put a microphone (Alexa) in their home that listens to 100% of every spoken word, they do not care.
But they will not eat at a restaurant if the table had a microphone. Agrh!
So it seems that as long as the customer gets a pinch of dopamine from having fun with the spyware service, countless customers care zero about their privacy.

    • @michaelm1

The worst thing is that people today need thorough explanation about why they actually need to preserve their freedom of speech. And even after the explanation, most of them won't even raise their finger when another slice of freedom is taken away from them.

    • @InfoSecGuardian
      @InfoSecGuardian 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

They have a false sense of security on two fronts:
      1) If they don't say Alexa, they think it's not listening. They seem to forget that it has to listen to hear the command.
      2) If they have not done anything wrong, then it does not matter. They fail to see the big picture where Data Brokers will sell to whoever pays them money, and this leads to bad actors getting enough information that they can steal your identity. Even if you do everything possible to protect your accounts, they now have enough to just call the businesses (e.g., Bank) and trick them into thinking it's really you.

    • @NoEgg4u
      @NoEgg4u 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@InfoSecGuardian I have explained #1 to them. They do not care.
Another issue is that mayors, governors, 3-letter-agency officials, etc, have Alexa in their homes.
CEOs of Fortune 500 companies have Alexa in their homes.
Now they can be blackmailed -- or -- at a minimum, influenced.
Even if they are not illegally coerced into yielding to corrupt demands, they can be influenced with advertising and marketing and "coincidental" meetings with foreign agents, etc, because people with access to their home's dialog will know far more about them -- both personally and professionally.
Even TV personalities and Hollywood star-makers can be compelled to say and do things, because someone who has their home's dialogs can pull their strings.
And if a nobody becomes a somebody, you can bet that Amazon's executives will be able to quickly produce a dossier on them. So when that nobody becomes someone worth milking, Amazon's executives will have the goods on them.

I went into my bank recently and the bank manager asked me into his office. He asked me how my golf was and had I enjoyed my recent day at an adjacent golf course. At the time I thought it a bit creepy but realised I'd given my credit card details away.
On the pretext of helping me he said I should come in later that week to plan use of money I had swilling around in my current account. We arranged an appointment and I went in and had a meeting with his assistant.
She showed me a video with some guff about the banking group etc. designed to impress.
In the video the narrator said" we will treat you as if you are a fraudster but don't worry we're doing it for your own good"
I stopped the video and said " if I reverse this sentence and tell you I'm going to treat you as a group of thieves, but don't worry I'm doing it for your own good, how would you feel"?

Terms of service are never there for the benefit of the consumer, but to insulate companies from legal repercussion. I may be cynical by some peoples' standards, but this is the only logic that makes sense to me.
I wish people would keep in mind that "Cloud" merely means "remotely hosted". If we kept that in mind we would perhaps also keep in mind that our services and data aren't in our control. Buzz words and how technology is described changes our views and attitudes towards them, which can be detrimental.

So I would guess that if you bought a cell phone, or a TV, or a car, and you weren't allowed to use it until you signed away your privacy rights in a EULA or ToS agreement, then that would be considered coercion. The problem is that until there are class action lawsuits that take these matters up to the Supreme Court, the companies will act as if they are perfectly legal and continue the spying.

That's another example of how perception of privacy has changed. People now think adresses and phone numbers are sensitive information. Those used to be considered public information about you. People even got sent a big book with all that data of all the people in your area. In the 90s you could even get it on CDRom.

Everyone is talking about the loss of privacy, but no one seems to be talking about WHY the stealers of our privacy are doing it. And it's very simple. Silibandia (Silicon Valley plus the broadband and media industries plus their feeders in the bot farming, dark web, VC, PE and cybersecurity industries) want money, power, control -- all the things you get when you have masses of people down on your plantation. We have this new thing - our digital selves, the digital twin of our physical selves - and we live our lives more and more in digital space. Silibandia wants that digital space to be their plantation.

It's all in perception, that starts the time in which we were born. Even then memories can be short, and bias can have a great effect. These are exploited in a variety of ways, mostly for power and control. If people are ignorant to the past, there is no way to know if they are really in the steam bath set to broil.
It's something I've seen in my professional career(it's in construction). It's just as bad as privacy(and related), that is government regulation. In 30 years I've seen things go from being easy to get approved, to almost impossible to get anything approved. If you just starting out in today's regulatory environment, you would assume things are just fine. Just like kids in todays internet, they have no idea what the early days of the net were like. Or a world where if you wanted to see a friend, you would stop by, or give them a call. Texting was something you did in school, under the duress of a getting a good grade. That was to teach you to be able to read and write. So you could write letters to people who lived too far away, to contact by any other means.

But many people are becoming nostalgic for how things used to be, some are actually taking action for their privacy even if it means getting different operating systems for their phones and their computers and using an actual Palm pilot which you can still buy brand new in their original packaging on eBay by the way if you're interested. There's no problem with Microsoft monitoring the sound in a room, listening for "Alexa". But that should be as far as it goes. They shouldn't analyse what they hear or store it for future use. That road leads to people being prosecuted for what they say in their own homes or what they say being used to send them targeted advertising. That's unwarranted intrusion (in my view) into areas that should be (and we assume are) totally private. That's why I turn off my tablet when I'm not using it, and don't leave it in standby ...I just don't trust big companies.
