This is a good performance, but the 1961 premiere by Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra is at the Internet Archive and it is spectacular. The archive also has a fine version by Erich Leinsdorf and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
This is actually my personal favorite Piston symphony. It's not as immediately likeable as the 2nd, 4th, and 6th symphonies, but there's something about the emotional expressiveness of the 7th... that Adagio pastorale is really something special.
Excellent symphony! But why did Ormandy never record such an fine work written for his orchestra? Sury he could not have considered it not good enough to be recorded. Very thankful for Mester and Louisville for this wonderful recording.
@@SergioCánovasCM Ah thanks. After much internet searching I did (with a friend) manage to identify the artist, but not the name of the painting. An interesting Hemingway type of guy, or such is my superficial impression from Wkipedia article and photos, and an impressive and admirable artist!! Grim subject in "Jealous Lover", horrifying, but compelling.
Just picked up the study score! The orchestration in this symphony is really fantastic!

I agree about the middle movement. It has something special.

The final decision would not have been Ormandy's, but his record label's.
@@ProfessorPille I doubt Ormandy ever failed to get his way if he really wanted it.
The fact it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize would have been a very good reason for Columbia to record it, but it didn't do so.
Who is the painter of this amazing, frightening picture?
"The Ballad of the Jealous Lover of Lone Green Valley" (1934) by the American painter Thomas Hart Benton.

@@SergioCánovasCM President Harry S.Truman called Thomas Hart Benton "the best damn painter in America".
This won the Pulitzer prize? Well, why not, they gave it to Hahn's violin concerto.
