Learning grammar doesn’t have to involve memorizing lists of often confusing rules. I’ve always found that the best way to learn the grammar of a new language is through exposure to vocabulary, words and especially phrases, in the language. I get this exposure through lots of reading and listening. The more exposure you get the more you will notice the patterns and rules of the language.

You're quite right - grammar knowledge becomes real knowledge when you /notice/ it, not when you merely accept that it exists and has some label

I can notice the grammar of each language without the need of studying "the grammar rules of French language " for example..

reem joueuse I agree. Just like a young child learns their own native language. The only difference is that we are much smarter than young child, so we are more apt to notice complex grammatical structures, rules, and exceptions.
My method for learning Spanish and English is a kind of "wise mix" of Steve Kauffman and AJ Hoje's advice. Using mini stories for language learning is great, but I repeat these stories at least 50 times, instead of learning a large number of words in a few time. But each one has his own method I guess. Fun is the most important ingredient.

I agree with repeating the mini-stories at least 50 times. We want to be memorizing parts of it, so we can quote it and have instant recall.
I think it's the same way like infants and toddlers are learning languages. I never learned languages in school. It was boring at school.
I learned them by useing and listening to them. By traveling and talking to the people in this language for example or writing with my American pen pal.

I`m from Brazil, and i see your videos 3 times, at the first time i saw in english without subtitles, the second time i put the english subtitles, and the last time i put the subtitles in portuguese, this has helped a lot to understand the words, Thank You Sir Steve.
You tell us what most language schools don't
I remember when I started learning english with a teacher. The teacher did a good job, but I used to check a lot of content in english, which made me always be a little bit ahead of my classmates. I didn't notice it at the begining, but after a couple of years I realized how big of a change it means to learn the way you say.

I think this is one of the best video's I've seen of yours Steve, at least in explaining how you go about seeing the grammar within what your reading and being able to notice structure and points.

This is the second time I watched this video, and this time around it makes much more sense. When I first watched it probably over a year ago, I understood phrase to mean the kind of sentence or saying you would find in a phrasebook. Which really doesn’t help. But now that I realize you’re talking about grammatical phrases and I see how that would help a lot. I want to start trying this more
Wow that was some very nice pronunciation in Spanish. I’ve been around expats in Peru who after many years surrounded by the language still sound terrible.
I think its good to at least be familiar with the basics of the language but once you have that down, exposure like you said to authentic material of the language is what will perfect the grammar

i feel the same when i study grammar without immersing myself into more listening, reading and learn phrases. because as time goes by, the rule of grammar that I remember would be wiped out from my memory because i rarely recall it.

I have been doing it between English, Spanish and Portuguese (my language) :)
This method is exactly how I learned the 2 languages I speak at home. The Philippines where I'm from we have 2 official languages English and Filipino so these are taught in school and since my ancestors are from China I studied in a Chinese school so we learned English, Filipino, and Chinese for 13 years. However my parents grew up in a different province that spoke Cebuano and my Chinese ancestors are mainly from the Fujian province so we also speak Hokkien (similar to Taiwanese) so my Cebuano and Hokkien I acquired purely from hearing my relatives speak and repeating these phrases my entire life. I'm using this method to learn European Portuguese and so far it's working especially for pronunciation just listening to Portuguese with Leo and Practice Portuguese and my Lingq stories.
Steve, I just joined LingQ and am already learning a lot! My first lesson was on the French dialogue between you and Henri regarding culture, i.e., "Bienvenue chez les ch'tis". A question: Some of your pronunciation of French words sounds just like Canadian French. Is that what you listened to most when you were learning French yourself. (By the way, when I first listened to the dialogue I thought I was listening to two native French speakers talking and it took me a few minutes to realize that the Steve was YOU, so GOOD JOB with your French. lol!) I look forward to learning a lot with LingQ . Alors, à la prochaine!

You should look online at the илья франк series of books. It's from Russian and English to a foreign language. All based on stories, reading and listening and no grammar.

HI Steve, You said the text and audio is free to download. I can download the audio but I dont know how to do that with the text. Thanks.
Steve might be referring to the Print button. Inside a lesson, click Menu. The Info pane shows up on the left. Near the top, there's a Print button. A new tab appears with just that lesson's text, formatted for printing.
You can either print to a printer, print to a PDF file (if your computer has that option, which it probably does), or copy and paste the text into something like a text editor (e.g. WordPad) or a word processor (e.g. Word) or into an e-mail if you want to e-mail all of the lessons of a course to yourself in one message and read them offline on your phone. This might make sense if the lessons are really short, as is often the case at the Beginning 1 level.

At what level are the mini stories? Beginning 1? Beginning 2? I realize they are just starting to be made available in Lingq (gradually) and not in most languages yet, but I would like to know where to look for them in the vast Course Library.
Ah--never mind. I found them for Spanish in Beginner 2.
Which language? Just search for mini stories. They should appear if they are there. They are meant to be beginner 2, but I think a total beginner can start there as long as there are no alphabet issues.
Maybe that is what mi problema is LOL I was never good in English language classes growing up...but I know what nouns & verbs are. I wanted to always learn another language and recently, my son introduced me to Duolingo so its what Ive been doing for the past 8 months. I know almost 500 spanish words now but I dont feel comfortable in having a small conversation with native speakers. I tried and failed. I think its because I havent memorized key phrases. I'm being taught alot of words I might not need in everyday conversations.
I almost wanted to give up because if I have difficulties knowing what parts of grammar is what for English, what makes you think I can learn it in Spanish? I just want to be able to understand (whether it's reading or listening) to Spanish and be able to speak it... writing it too would be nice.
No te rindas! You can continue learning. My piece of advice for you is don’t use just one resource to learn a language. Listen to music, watch series or whatever you like to do. If you fall in love with the language, you will learn it. They only one who can stop you is yourself.
@@nohzazu3395 Oh I agree. Ive been watching videos, trying to find movies in spanish with either spanish or english subtitles and lately Ive been chatting online with native speakers whom has been helping me understand. I think Ive learned more from communicating with them.

It's hard to change the traditional way a language is taught at schools when the curriculum is loaded with grammatical rules.
Schools need to test students so they can give out grades. Teaching grammar is one way to do that. The fact that most students can’t speak the language, doesn’t seem to bother them.

We learned how to speak BEFORE we learned grammar rules.
We can learn to speak really well. Then we will start to understand the grammar rules.
