The era they were born and raised there was great responsibility placed on the eldest child. And the respect the younger siblings had for the second mother-like or father-line sibling was abundant. You make it seem like a different century. That is the way things work in most families with the oldest sibling, but it not like a second parent. Some people just don't expect girls to be kids.
