That first level was made to test all the mechanics. That's why all those NPCs are there doing nothing until you bump into them (to test their reactions when bumped into), that AI skater is just going back and forth (to test the pathfinding for the NPC skaters), obvious gaps outlined by squares (to test gaps, of course), collectables in a line (to make sure you can pick them up), basic things to grind, wallride, etc. Same with the Gun level. That's to test the movement across terrain, because if the movement works on a level not designed for a Tony Hawk game, it'll work anywhere. Also, they didn't have to make a new set of terrain to test it. You should do one on the missing THPS3 levels. Everyone talks about Paris, but there's one mentioned only on the wiki called "Skate Camp" that I'm curious about.

If I recall correctly, we scrapped it in favor of the later beach-based Australia level in THUG2 (I also designed that one) because we had much better reference material for the beach areas than we did for the Opera House area. I also recall it being difficult to get a good view of the iconic opera house buildings from the ground level, while trying to keep them big and interesting while you were closer up to them. This phase of the design was probably me testing how far the level would have to sprawl to get that view, and it was proving to be way too big to fit into game memory. And hey, also love the shout-out to School II! I designed that one too! Keep up the great work, man! This was really fun to watch!

Hey Rad Rat, what you have is an internal development copy of the game, probably a milestone or weekly build copy...probably not a Beta. Activision producers would get copies to test and to use to show progress to management in Santa Monica - where this one was probably found. The wilderness level you were playing never made it into Gun, it was probably just some very early tests. When we started initial work on Gun, we just used the TH engine and dropped stuff in to there to quickly have a way to test it. The first wild west building I stuck in a Gun test level was the haunted house from Carnival in TH4. We didn't start full time on Gun until after THUG shipped. The Australia level you are playing is also probably unrelated to the one in THUG2, since no work was done on that level until THUG shipped and we got back from Xmas break. I think that maybe we had planned on an Australia level in THUG and then nixed it, but my memory of some of those days is fading a bit. This was really early on the Philly level, as one of the first things I did art for was the THPS Love sculpture next to the fountain, weird that this version was in this copy. TH3,4,and THUG were developed on PS2 and ported to Xbox in-house. Great job on the videos, I was looking for a walk down memory lane and I got one today, I haven't looked at ugly early production levels in years - ahh the memories.

Philly, Downhill, and School 1 are actually in the FULL version of the game. They’re hidden behind gameshark codes and some of the textures are are different. (I think I remember a chick on a billboard?) I remember someone using a gameshark online back in 2009(?) This version of downhill jam is identical to the version in the full game Same school 1 version as well. That Philly level is more complete I believe though

If Westside, (the seemingly copy and pasted wild west level,) was from GUN, it *possibly* could have been a cross promotion that never came to fruition. I'm not sure when GUN started development, but given that it was also a Neversoft game, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if it was a half-baked idea someone had that either didn't make it out of a boardroom or just got left on the cutting room floor
All the classic levels were locked on disc could unlock with gs or action reply. That version of Australia was scrapped entirely. In terms of textures a lot of games it was still very popular to buy texture packs, and with tonyhawk games I really wouldn't doubt them doing this to some degree. A lot of texture packs were just photographs of real things like buildings and what not. Some were entirely made artistically but for the most part it was still pretty common to purchase the textures and then modify them for use. I do not know personally if activision/neversoft did this.
My only possible conclusion for the existence of the Australia level is in the original storyline, you actually go to Australia. The devs liked the idea, and started working on it but scrapped it for unknown reasons. It was later re-implemented into THUG2.
The odd thing about a large portion of these unused levels is that Philly, Downhill Jam, and School 1 are the same version that are used in the THUG 2 classic mode, which makes me think that the Classic mode was originally going to be in THUG 1 considering all the throwback levels. After all, THUG 2 is running a comparable game engine,
I wish Sony released one more portable hand held console mirrored to the PSP and PSV except that the last device is more perfect at emulation. It would be awesome if the PSP3 could easily run PS2 emulated roms.
what do you mean the shred controller wont work anymore? wont calibrate or wont turn on? if it won't calibrate, there is a very slight chance that your cellphone or another wireless device is causing signal disturbance. As I understand it... the shred controller has an I/O controller that has a hard time keeping up with the refresh and if you have another device in your pocket or near you that has bluetooth and or wireless capability (depends on system, happens on ps3 and wii) it will just simply think that the other device is the console and when it tries to turn on to calibrate, it just hits the first no from the controller and repeats over. if that doesnt work, it makes a good foot stool.

This Australia map you have is of the Sydney harbour also in New South Wales.

I'd say this is likely a VERY early build of THUG 2 given the THUG 1 campaign is complete and there's new stuff that appeared in THUG 2 present.
