  • Hi all i have had a lot of questions asked recently about the HDD 12 egg incubator and the humidity,with help from Tiny my Buff Orpington chicken iv tried to answer as many as possible . Being dyslexic i had trouble reading the manual that comes with it and had problems understanding the surface water area and also getting the humidity to stay level throughout the incubation. In this video ill show you the different things that i did to eventually level the humidity , i was lucky to get an amazing hatch rate of 4 Blue Orpintons at the end of the 21 days. I will also add that this is what i have done and if you choose to follow my advice or the steps in this video it is entirely down to you and i am not responsible for the outcome.
    These are the links to the products i use and mention in the video.
    If your not already please subscribe to my channel, I try to get videos out a couple of times a week if im able to.

    So pleased I found this, we have just ordered this incubator and was worried whether the humidity would be an issue. I know now to keep an eye on it. We are in Yorkshire and our home is average 44/55% humidity. Sometimes more as we are a large family in a small home. Thank you for posting this. Its been a great help.

I believe I just need to adjust the automatic timer as it is set for 2hrs, but will look this up online to find correct balance as I believe it said they need to be turned 3x a day? Just wanted to say thank you for this video! So so helpful as I was having the exact same problem as I bought the same incubator. Humidity was shooting up to 80% plus when I filled the middle channel like the book said so I was getting to the point of having hardly any water in there just to bring the number down. But even so it was still all over the place going from 45% to 65% over the space of 24hrs. So I was having to open it up 2/3 times a day!
    Anyway I’ve now used a bottle cap like you and it’s steady at 53% and only needing to add more water when it gets to 50% and am only needing to open the lid like once a day.

    Hi! Thank you for your video, it’s very helpful!
    I am putting my eggs into lockdown tomorrow morning, using this same incubator.
    Can you please tell me how you went with the humidity at lockdown? Did it increase with each chick that hatched? I only have 7 out of 12 eggs going into lockdown. 4 of them definitely look good and the other 3 I wasn’t sure so I’m leaving them in.
    Since it’s such a small incubator, I worry that the humidity will soar and I wouldn’t know what to do since we shouldn’t open the incubator when eggs start pipping.
    Also, did you cover both holes at the bottom? I had thought they were vent holes as many other incubators seem to have some kind of vent for fresh oxygen during hatch?
    Did covering them help maintain humidity?
    Did you use the water caps during lockdown/hatch and if so, was it underneath the tray, away from the chicks? Thanks!😊

    • @HadesandPoseidonpouchie
      @HadesandPoseidonpouchie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi hun at lockdown i removed the cap and used a large syring that i put a small pipe on so i could lift the corner only and add water to the machine its self. Theres 2 holes in the bottom and i had them both open at lockdown as well hun. As each chick hatches the humidity will spike but as long as its over 65 percent i wouldent worry to much . Its the first 18 days you need to keep it low after that its fine if it rises hun xxxx

    Such a wonderful and helpful video. Thanks for all the tips. I am preparing to do my first incubator hatch. (Previous hatches all under broody hens.) So useful to get UK specific tips. I hope Tiny is doing well. I also have a little hen who i think has her hip popped out too at hatch. She hops about on one leg, and is also very spoiled due to all the care I gave her :-) Do you have any tips you've learned from caring for Tiny in terms of how well she's integrated in the flock? Or any longer term care tips to watch out for? (I do the usual checking her feet regularly, cleaning out her nose and any feathers she can't reach etc. She even enjoys leg massages and pecks me if I stop too soon!) Sadly she's not been able to make friends with the rest of the flock as some of the hens bully her (sheis half their size and very nervous and protective of her bad leg!) and so I am hoping to raise some chicks that will hopefully become her friends. Thanks again. All the best.

      Im so happy my videos have been able to help you huno. Im afraid I dont have any useful tips on caring for your girly Im sorry huni. Due to the leg bands in tiny and getting them on her so early on we were able to save her. Shes an Orpington large breed so 1 leg wouldnt of been able to support her weight so we knew through the whole process that there was a 50/50 she may not survive. You could try getting Sebrights, some of tge males can be a pain but the hens are very sweet and make lovely noises bless them. You may end up having to keep her seperate as the others wont want anything to do with an injured bird at all. As a pray species an injured bird would bring in predators in the wild so they bully to get the injured bird as far from them as possible. They can also kill an injured bird and will eat it as well. I have heard of it happening. Tiny is pretty perfect you cant tell she was ever injured at all. Some vets will see chickens so could be worth getting it looked at. She wont show signs of pain but could be in discomfort so the vet may give a pain killer. We had a silkie that badley injured her leg and we put her to sleep as she was dragging the foot and being badley bullied she was very unhappy and in pain so it was the kindest thing to do for her xxxx

    I watched your video. I’m a newbie and there is so much to learn.
    1) You don’t add water to the bottom tray only the bottle cap?
    2) I saw that you plugged one of the holes on the bottom tray. What was it you used to plug it? Also, when did you remove the plug?
    3) You mentioned using a syringe to fill the bottle cap with water, is that to reduce the water moisture from escaping?
    4) What is your step to step process to candle the eggs? I’m assuming I remove only so many eggs at a time, candle them and then put the eggs back in the incubator and then remove another amount of eggs and repeat.
    Thank you.

    • @HadesandPoseidonpouchie
      @HadesandPoseidonpouchie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi huni welcome to hatching its so cool. I only add water to the cap to limit to amount of surface water so the humidity stays at a good level. Then once i go into lockdown i remove the cap and put the water directly into the base. The reason i use the syringe with the bit of hose attached at lockdown is that i only have to lift the lid just enough to get the pipe in to the incubator base and squirt the wster in. In some incubators it can take up 6 hours for the humidity level to fully settle down. Once a chick pips you need to sit on your hands and not open the incubator which is why i use the syringe with the hose on it so i can get the water in fast and the humidity dosent drop enough to skrink wrap the chick in its membrain. I roll my own ciggarets and i used a filter to block up one of the holes its the perfect size and workes really well but a bit of tape would do the same just becarefull not to bump the incubator if you do do this. I candle my eggs at days 7, 10 and 18. I remove 1 egg from the incubator pop the lid back on and i use a normal torch to see whats going on inside then i pop it back in the incubator get another one out and do the same for each egg hun. If im not sure about an eggs progress or that it could be dead i put a question mark on the egg with a pencil and i also mark each egg with a number so in my notes i can write say number 3 dosent seem to be growing etc. I keep notes on all my hatches and i can look back to see if any batches had problems i know where i brought the eggs from or if they are from my chickens etc if there are any problems itll show in my notes over time you see. I mark my eggs with an X an O and a line so each time i check i know if they are turning correctly. Also huni run your incubator empty for a week before you hatch anything and get the hydrometer and the extra thermometer. Go by the temp of the internal thermometer youv put in as i found it a little more acurate. And also get a good incubator disenfectant i have i think Chicktech sanatiser. I always disenfect it before and after use and its proved great huni. Good luck with hatching hun please dont forget this is just how i hatch huni im just putting it out to help if possible. Have fun xxxx

      I had mine jump alot through out the 3 weeks. The first time i used it i opened it a little bit but was told not to because it takes so long to stabilise again. This incubator i tried to keep between 45 percent and 55 percent. I found using the bottle lid for the water made a huge difference as well. Also the humidity in the room the incubator is in will also affect the humidity in the incubator hun. Try to open a window and/or door to the room to keep it at a stable humidity hun. Hi huni i have a large syringe with some fish tank air pipe on the end of it. I can open the lid just a tiny bit feed the pipe under the tray and squirt in some water. I dont put loads in but maybe 2ml at a time. It also depends where you are in the world as well. Our humidity where i am is roughly a bit lower then my incubator. But it does change daily due to weather conditions. I did try a 5 liter bottle lid but when the eggs start rolling it got knocked over. You must be careful to only open it enough to get the lip of a spouted jug or something in it or youll loose the humidity thats in there. The syringe i have was one of a pack hubby brought for his workshop, resins etc so i got a new one and the hose as i said is from a fish tank air pump, it was new and its relatively cheap. How do you maintain the humidity in the last 3 days? Because I add water until reach 65/70%, but then during the night it decreases until 40%… which I think is the problem for not hatching more eggs.

    • @HadesandPoseidonpouchie
      @HadesandPoseidonpouchie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It should hold for around 24hours hun. I dont think your lid is down right or maybe its the vent in the bottom hun. I lockdown on day 19 hun it gives any chicks that are behind a chance to catch up that way. Once lockdown i put water in a larger lid. A 5 liter water bottle lid works well or you can add another small lid. But as i said either your home is very dry or your lids not down correctly hun. Just check it several times a day and top up if needed. I have a large syringe with some 5mm hose on the end with this i can refill the lids easily and not release the heat or humidity as i only need to open the lid a tiny bit. Also did you run it for 24 hours before adding the eggs hun ? And do you have an extra thermometer ? I dont rely on the temp on the machine i use a separate thermometer inside which i rely on more hun xxxx
