As a math teacher, one difficulty I encountered with Microsoft’s apps was creating and editing equations. Because of this, I leave the more complex edits to be done on my Windows PC. Even so, the Pages app has been a pleasant surprise, as I can create and edit equations using LaTeX in it.
This type of point-to-point review is much needed - thanks, Tech Dad! As for Python: yes, you can run Python interpreters on the iPad, but you will be missing out on the majority of machine learning libraries (like the ones for deep learning). My suggestion: use Blink and ssh into a VPS for that. (You can even run the web version of VS Code with Blink.)
Talking about Excel, when you add a comment to a cell then you cannot edit it. One more thing.. during Teams calls can you choose to share a specific window with stage manager or just the entire screen

Been using my ipad since the release of the 4th generation as my main computer. For a while, using project management tools like Monday was a chore, now the web version is very accessible. It’s just a matter of sometimes NOT using the app, which can be very counter-intuitive. :D
I have a gaming pc and iPad Pro on my desk and I use those devices together. Pc is my 'home base' where all the other devices get backed up (2tb storage) and the platform for advanced tasks like streaming, gaming or 3D editing. iPad is just my 'creative zone' where i use Affinity Suit, Procreate and Nomad Sculpt for start any project I do basically. I never asked my iPad to be a desktop pc but for sure it has a great potential in many fields... talking about mine (graphic design), iPad can be a huge companion for start a professional path and it's also cheaper than a Wacom drawing tablet + a pc paired with if we want the same performance. The problem with iPad comes only when you start comparing it to other powerful devices like a Macbook Pro, because they cost almost the same. I think that the choise between those 2 devices depends on personal needs, in particular if a user need the touch screen or not. For any illustrator or artist who need to draw directly, iPad is a game changer and and absolute must. It's the perfect device for 'hand made' digital art. On the other hand, if someone is more focused on a desktop experience and need to use a keyboard and mouse all the time, I think a Macbook Pro is a way better option. I still have mine here from 2013, still working perfectly after 11+ years. About gaming, just forget Apple.. I'm sorry but I have both Mac and Windows and I can tell you 100% that gaming on Apple is forced and not even a comparable experience to a base gaming pc. Every brand and device focus on a specific target and for sure, apple's targets are not gamers :)
Hi TechDad! I really enjoy your content. New subscriber here. I own 2024 IPad Air 13 inch, mostly for entertainment content, sports apps, music content, news content, magazines etc. Works alongside my MacBook Air M1 very well. Keep up the great work!
At 2:09 - you dicuss if you can create headings. Word on iPadOS allows assigning headings, but I think the question is as you stated "can you define headings?" - which to me means the current font of a "Heading 1" is "Calabri 24 point", but I want it as "Helvetica 22 point" - that does not appear possible in Microsoft on the iPadOS.
I appreciate your videos. You have me thinking about my ipad in a different way. I have a gaming pc, a macbook air and a M1 Ipad pro 11" and now I use my ipad way more. I have moved alot of what I do on my macbook to my ipad and have loved the experience so far. I have started bringing my ipad to work with me along side my macbook and it have been nice to have an extra screen and I can use steam link to stream from my gaming pc if I wanna play games on my ipad. So for me it is not my only device but it sure is a nice to have.
I have been using the M2 iPad Air 13-Inch and man its so fun to use. I would’ve gone with the M4 pro model but I am not a power user, so some light video editing and photo editing is about all I need to do and the M2 chip is more than enough. If anyone is considering making this a laptop replacement I would for sure go with the cheapest option first, then if you’d like to upgrade in the future to the pro models then go ahead and do so because the 120hz screen, loud speakers, and the powerful M4 chip is a great addition! But, like I said the new 13 inch size for the iPad air is perfect if all you do is watch TH-cam, maybe take some notes, video/photo edit here and there, as well as maybe some word documents and excel sheets.
the ability to create pivot tables has been a recent addition. the heading thing has been implemented as long as I can remember. what is a mess is the connection to One Drive. super unreliable, sometimes files don't sync at all, and sometimes I start working on a an excel table that's on one drive and that I have changed on a different device, and only some minutes later it updates the data to the latest version.
Such a great video! I’ve switched to all iPad as well and as an aspiring photographer and accounting nerd (somehow I do both of those things) it is amazing what I can do with just the iPad as my (almost) only device!
I’m giving the iPad another go as a primary computing device to see if I want to upgrade my iPad Air 4 to something with an M chip to get better external monitor support. I’m in sales, so the tasks are generally pretty light, but I sell software that’s PC only. I think I can just do screen recordings to demo it though. One thing I don’t have a solution for yet is attaching emails to the CRM (Hubspot in our case)
I have the same iPad Pro M4 with keyboard case and have been trying to use it to “replace” my laptop/Mac - so your channel is interesting to me, especially with your background and understanding of more complex workflows. Skydweller7080’s comment about heading styles in word is about DEFINING styles, not applying them using pre-defined styles as in your demonstration. Let’s say for instance, I want to define a heading of Helvetica Bold 28pt with a 1pt border and define that as “Heading 1” - it’s not possible to define that style on iPad and then quickly apply the style on a long-form document. Word on desktop is more robust in that it allows users to have the style window up while displaying the document. I am intrigued by the idea of using the iPad as a computer, but MacOS and desktop-class software is in a different league for power users. I think for the next several years, there’s a place for both the iPad and the Mac. In your upcoming videos, I am curious of reasons why you have decided to simplify your work and life. The feature of the iPad is that it’s limited - yet powerful - so the challenge is in figuring out how to do it more simple on the iPad. For me, many of these tasks are just cumbersome on the iPad - so I have to go back to the Mac…
I’ve moved to iPad only for personal use (mostly, I have to use the MacBook Air only occasionally), but one thing I noticed with excel (which I’m a power user) is with the vlookup formulas. I can use it within the file, but I haven’t seen how to use it within different files like I do quite a lot on the desktop version
No extension support for Edge, Chrome MS Teams doesn't recognize Edge or Chrome as a supported browser when attempting to run the web version of the program (I am aware the MS Teams app exist)
I have a 2020 12.0 ipad pro and a mini 7. have never been able to run Thoney to connect to a raspi W. I have a brydge connect keyboard, and it works great, I do a lot of writing, drawing with the pencil, but programming is where the ipad falls short. there are a few programs for programming, like pythonesta you mentioned but it does not connect to a raspi.
They added the ability to create a pivot table?! Nice! that was one of the big reasons I stayed away. The others were in Powerpoint I couldn’t use SmartArt or do an “Edit In Excel” for some of the graphs in Powerpoint. Word was a big one a few years ago for me too because you couldn’t build academic references like the Desktop version.
Amazing video! I've also been using an iPad Pro as my main computer since the M1 version. Now I also have an M4. Are you using the eleven inch or the thirteen inch? Speaking for myself, I have to say that no other personal computer is as personal as the iPad. ❤
In PowerPoint for iPadOS, you cannot insert a new chart, nor can you edit the data within a chart that has already been created either on a Mac or a PC.
Cool video. I wonder if the ability to multitask during an IMovie export is a recent update. I recall being unable to do on my iPad Pro several months ago.
I used to run a lot of Python scripts and bigger projects around 8 years ago for my job and was using Pythonista extensively back then… so yes, I could run Python and have a terminal since almost ever on iPad… I haven’t touched Python since then but don’t expect it to get worse since then…
i love my ipad pro and i use it daily. but for me the office suite sucks. eventhough they’ve come a far way they’re still lacking in crucial parts. In word references and tables of seem to be non existent. And in Excel i cant even name a cell.. Im really missing the settings in word where i can tweak basic stuff like cell tables, columns, pictures, and numbering.
Hi Tech Dad, Is there a way to have more than one audio playing at the same time? For example on weekends I like to watch several college football games at the same time.
Apple needs to get rid of that terrible nub of a mouse cursor in iPad OS, or at least give us the option to use the Mac one. That and no proper menu bar are my two biggest grievances. iPad os 18 solved most of the problems I had
I tried to go iPad only for work. My job is a business analyst is pretty much the office suite/JIRA and similar browser based applications. I was close to going for it full time but ended up getting a Mac for macOS instead. My workplace have recently locked down the ability to access the desktop MS365 apps so can now only access them via a browser (personal Mac). That means my experience is pretty much the same on desktop and iPad. In some cases better on iPad now as they haven’t locked down mobile apps… My one major workflow task I’ve not figured out on iPad OS is taking screenshots and editing them. I don’t mean content creator level in something like photoshop, I just want something like shottr where it’s easy to blur/remove text, add number pins, highlight and add text etc. I know the standard screenshot tool can do some of it but it’s just not fully featured enough. Any suggestions on a workflow option for that on iPad?
Excel no power query, importing data from various sources very limited the one that annoys me the most but is also short on Mac version is get data from web and then transform it. Web browser can’t inspect elements to get to the source for scraping. Pythonista I use it’s very good but only native only libraries also for python juno is good it gives you the ability to do Jupyter notebooks with most modules available not a full experience but close enough on the go. Both are paid but worth it for some coding options
In fact I found some limitations even on the imac version vs the windows version. Probably running the excel inside Edge is the way to go, but I see this as limitation from MS.
I think - just my thought- it would be nice to give your human name to a channel (or pseudonym). It seems it has a “private” atmosphere (not a corporate) which is a gem. Some sort of a real name might give more definition.
I need your advice, I run a meetup on zoom, and on my MacBook, I use my notes, the zoom application, and safari, to play videos during the meeting, can I do that with my IPad m4 Pro?
Yes but you’ll likely need a second screen for your notes. You can only share the iPad display so you’ll need to share that during the zoom call. Audio for the video should work but I’d do a test run for sure. Hope this helps!
The one downside for me is, its display is made for outside usage, and battery is made for longevity work. Bruh what's the point of having 1600 nits while its battery goes down to 20% under 2hours of procreate and browser use at like 40-50% brightness. And same goes for pencil pro it only works for 3 hours. It's a really beautiful display and feels good to draw even on naked screen but drawing tablet with pc is more efficient. Everybody loves Procreate but I love customizable shortcut key. So, iPad is not working out for me.
Background processing is only available if you’re using it in Stage Manager mode, not while using the conventional split screen mode. Though, I actually prefer the conventional mode, less laggy and less distraction. Great video btw
My needs are a lot simpler than those of other people as I don't use the iPad for gaming or business, so Pages and Numbers have sufficient functionality for me. And for my hobbies, Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve, and Logic Pro are great options. However, there are reasons why the iPad and iPhone fall way behind the Mac when it comes to being pro machines. Just to give you two examples, there is no clipboard manager, and you can't use alternate fonts or coloured text in the Notes app (yes, I know about coloured highlighting, but it's not the same). Now, these are very basic facilities that are fundamental to pro use of these gadgets. So, IMO they're just not there yet. And given the way Apple implements new features piecemeal, they might never be.

In Microsoft word you can’t put caption. Usually that option can be found in reference tab.

Yeah, MS really doesn’t want the ipad to have the full version of office apps LOL, bummer
ofc micro soft is scared that their surface touch wont sell if they optimise their apps for ipad😂.
Cool video. I wonder if the ability to multitask during an IMovie export is a recent update. I recall being unable to do on my iPad Pro several months ago.
To be honest I liked the days when we hit render and could go grab a coffee. My motion GFX buddies loved that. Multitasking is over-rated!

cloud gaming is a thing :)
The fill flash feature doesn't work that well... when it comes to formulas you need to manually type your formula if you want to have a constant cell.

iPadOS will catch up to MacOS in terms of features. Some say we could get a touch based version of MacOS. 😊
❤️
You can't batch rename files and it's riddiculous.
Before i watch and after i like…. It can’t run Unity/unreal engine. Sadly this is why I got rid of mine
On ipad you can not do cross workbook v lookup
It seems Microsoft purposely giving iPad mobile ver. even if iPad is capable of running desktop ver.
Should of got the white Magic Keyboard white and silver would’ve went hard
you mean someone actually commented without knowing what they were talking about... hmmmmmm thats a first for TH-cam :-)
I just sold my iPad Pro 2020. It’s such a poor productivity machine.
