Season 3 is even worse, and I expect Season 4 to be horrific, especially since Henry Cavill will not be reprising his role. I am currently reading it in publication order as well. I just finished Sword of Destiny and I look forward to starting blood of elves. I found reading the short stories beneficial and necessary as it adds world building elements such as characters and lore. And I have no regrets at all ♥
I just finished blood of elves and it was so satisfying to me after knowing the characters in the first two books, now they just did stuff whith them and man, now I don't want this to end, and I'm tecnicaly at the beginning of the big story.
Little spoiler from Polish :) : Andrzej Sapkowski wrote an anthology of funny stories named in Polish " Something ends, something begins". Only one of them is about the Witcher. It is about Geralt and Yennefer's WEDDING. I'm not sure if this has yet been translated into English. It was great fun to read what happened before, during and after the ceremony. There's a time skip between wish and destiny and in Destiny yennefer meets up with Geralt on the dragon hunt and it's the first time they meet since he left her with a note after the first book so she wouldn't have helped him like she did in storms. I am one of those people who are actually not happy with numbers on the spine being used only for the main story. but it is what it is and I cant change it. My friend did not read short stories and his experience was close to nonexisting in the matter of twists, deeper character relationships... ya know. Publication order all the way.
should you read the short stories? YES! obligatory, the characters meet each other in them. you won't get the beautiful callbacks and emotive moment of the blood of elves if you don't read the short stories. 100% recommended for better overall experience

Thank you for the video! I actually didn’t know the last wish was a short stories book, just assumed it’s written in such way you jump backwards and forwards in time on purpose. It kind of made sense to me more, as I understood why they made season 1 in such a confusing timeline. Now I know I’ll just keep following the publication timeline. However, I didn’t get why series creators add events of future books. I feel like series timeline could spoil book reading now as they are out of control with their timeline, more over not giving us any indication where we are at.
I had no clue when to read Season of Storms and nobody seemed to agree on it when I looked it up. I think I actually ended up reading it after Blood of Elves, purely because that's when I came across someone who said that, timeline-wise, Season of Storms is supposed to happen before Sword of Destiny (but I had already read both short stories books as well as Blood of Elves). If I had to recommend someone else a good order to read the books in, it would definitely be: The Last Wish, Season of Storms, Sword of Destiny and then the rest.

In Hungary the Witcher books were actually published in this very order because they are supposed to be read in the way you mentioned. So this video seemed a little dumb to me because the Hungarian witcher books ive read had the volume numbers written on them :D but its important that youve told the readers to read the short stories!!:) So the Last Wish was actually no.1, Sword of Destiny no.2😄 and in the Sword of Destiny, the Ciri storyline actually starts so it can't be left out imo😄

Almost every new Witcher video I see says something along the lines of “let’s read the Netflix’s Witcher books” or “let’s play Netflix’s Witcher 3 on PC”. not to nitpick and sound shitty, but please, Netflix has no credit in the books or the games. Are there any of the Witcher books without the “Now on Netflix”? I hate that every time I try to find the series at Barnes and noble, every book I see has that printed on the cover it’s really unattractive and a turnoff
I honestly don't get why English/American publishers don't just number them 1-7/8 starting with the Last Wish, the intended/optimal enjoyment order is pretty clear to anyone who's read it so why the mystifying of potentiall readers? Yes, LW and SoD should absolutely be read first and in that order. Also who the heck could stop after Sword of Destiny to read some random else thing? It's not random short stories and BAM! a pentalogy of novels saga! There's clearly something going on by the end of SoD that slowly got momentum throughout the seemingly disparate sses that finally started rolling and without that fake happy ending one would not be able to satisfyingly jump off the reading at that point... Did they even like the books these soulless... ehm. Not to mention the epilogue puts it quite firmly to be read after the saga. Also the writing is two decades removed in this intermediary placing and it would be noticed. It would seem overall out of place. Anyone who suggests alternative reading order to the original Polish publication one (the english one is just inexplicable) must have either not read or forgot or not liked the books or not though much about it or something, I don't know nor get it. This is not the kind of series where the order can be debatable and/or optional. The short stories do build to and eventually tell an overarching story and flow right into the novels, they are vital part of the saga itself, not some electable miscellanea (that is SoS though).

I have started to listen this series on audiobook. I'm 1 short story in and I'm already forgetting the names of characters. Do you think it will affect my experience going further into the series? Is it better to read it physically than audiobook, or should i listen to the first story again?
The books pre-date the netflix series, and the early/mid 2000 polish tv series as yhey were written in the 90's. They are not The Witcher netflix novels as your uninformed title claims.

Strongly recommend starting from the beginning. The show barely follows the book, especially the second season. If you read it you’ll realize how terrible the Netflix adaptation is. Made many unnecessary changes that ruined much of the story telling and character development so far
What about reading Sword of Destiny before The Last Wish, if it's mostly short stories, or is there basically some fundamental story/character introductions that were laid out in The Last Wish that Sword of Destiny presumes you have knowledge of? For context, I just finished The Last Wish, but am trying to get my brother into the books.
the stories in the last wish all happen chronologically before those in the sword of destiny and some of them set up a bit of history and context for the sword of destiny. it's definitely better to read it first. (technically, sword of destiny was published before the last wish, but all of the short stories in the last wish had been published earlier in a fantasy short story magazine)

(I only ever checked the particular magazine pub. dates. Must have mixed Last Wish the short story collection book with Last Wish the particular short story in careless search, heh.)
You can read only witcher saga books so these 1-5 in this video but it isn't recomended. Last Wish and Sword of Destiny introduce many important characters like Geralt, Ciri, Jaskier/Dandelion, Yennefer and they give more information about world building. For example If you start with Blood of Elves you May me confused where is Geralt, why is Ciri so important and other things. But if you know witcher world and characters enough then yes you can read it that way.
i prefer the first two books where its just short stories and windows ov his life... once andrew sat down and flushed out his idea it became politics and plots and the witcher became a background character to that asshole fate.
Same, coming from Netflix Series watching the 3rd season I realized there is more to this story that was never said and I looked online and found myself in a rabbit hole of Witcher lore. I have started to listen this series on audiobook. I'm 1 short story in and I'm already forgetting the names of characters. Do you think it will affect my experience going further into the series? Is it better to read it physically than audiobook, or should i listen to the first story again?

The books pre-date the netflix series, and the early/mid 2000 polish tv series as yhey were written in the 90's. They are not The Witcher netflix novels as your uninformed title claims.
It’s that title so it picks up every search of the Witcher on TH-cam, not to miss inform people, it’s so it reaches a wider range of search on the platform. people looking for either the games, the books, or the show all can find the video instead of having to search specifically each of them

They said danusia stok translations were inferior compare to david french and even david french translation has some issues. Is it a big problem? I'm dying for an answer. Thank you.

Strongly recommend starting from the beginning. The show barely follows the book, especially the second season.
If you read it you’ll realize how terrible the Netflix adaptation is. Made many unnecessary changes that ruined much of the story telling and character development so far
The season was really good independently but didn’t follow the books (but did have some scenes that were similar) :)
What about reading Sword of Destiny before The Last Wish, if it's mostly short stories, or is there basically some fundamental story/character introductions that were laid out in The Last Wish that Sword of Destiny presumes you have knowledge of? For context, I just finished The Last Wish, but am trying to get my brother into the books.
The order is necessary.
the stories in the last wish all happen chronologically before those in the sword of destiny and some of them set up a bit of history and context for the sword of destiny. it's definitely better to read it first. (technically, sword of destiny was published before the last wish, but all of the short stories in the last wish had been published earlier in a fantasy short story magazine)
@@joshridinger3407 Oh gosh! You are right! I always assumed Last Wish was first but it came a year later of Sword of Destiny! And here I always advocated the publishing order... (I only ever checked the particular magazine pub. dates. Must have mixed Last Wish the short story collection book with Last Wish the particular short story in careless search, heh.)

You can read only witcher saga books so these 1-5 in this video but it isn't recomended. Last Wish and Sword of Destiny introduce many important characters like Geralt, Ciri, Jaskier/Dandelion, Yennefer and they give more information about world building. For example If you start with Blood of Elves you May me confused where is Geralt, why is Ciri so important and other things.
But if you know witcher world and characters enough then yes you can read it that way.

i prefer the first two books where its just short stories and windows ov his life... once andrew sat down and flushed out his idea it became politics and plots and the witcher became a background character to that asshole fate.
So there are 8 books total but 5 are main stories & 3 are short stories? Asking because I don’t know

Same, coming from Netflix Series watching the 3rd season I realized there is more to this story that was never said and I looked online and found myself in a rabbit hole of Witcher lore. Now I want to start reading the books but hate how Netflix has put these obnoxious circles on them, any advice on where to find good original book series or should I just have to deal with it?

I hate that peter Kenny does thr voice in the audio books. Some of his voice are downright unbearable. I hate the overly British accent he uses sometimes. Gave up after a couple of min on the sword of destiny
