  • Project Ara is a new modular computing platform, allowing devices to be customized for style and function. Choose your high-res camera, add a louder speaker, swap in a better battery. Imagine the possibilities. And we’re releasing a developer kit with device later this year. Check for updates here: g.co/ara and follow us on twitter @ProjectAra

      the thing is, this project was almost dead, but thanks to find of research and testing they concluded that people don't care about the processing power of their phones as much as everything else. So everything besides graphics and processing will be available to modify

    • @Pacavi
      @Pacavi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      +Pemphro the RAM, processor, and main memory won't be upgradable, which have evolved dramatically over the past few years. To have these limited and say the phone is fully upgradable without getting a new phone is false. When technology advances, this phone may have a new camera, but the main frame will be left obsolete. Also, as screens get to a higher resolution, and they add features to them, we'd have to replace the whole frame to replace the screen I believe. In doing so, we'd have to pay for new RAM, processor, and memory.

      Apple users don't think every new phone is revolutionary. In fact, it's probably Apples formula of not changing every new phone too much that makes people keep buying them. It's easier having a new phone that doesn't take a week to get used to and if there are any problems the solution is probably the same as the solution of the last phone.
      And it's not like Apple users like every change either. Like how the iPhone 7 supposedly won't have a headphone jack and will be using Bluetooth earphones instead.

      +Chris McPole The main issue with Google Glass was the price point. It wound up alienating a large group of the general public. Google also should have taken a more active approach to handling the concerns of people in and out of the community. The device itself wasn't actually the problem and a lot of people showed interest to having even just a couple of the features let alone the whole package. Hell, the camera quality isn't great but I have yet to see a more practical form of capturing pictures in the moment.
      Source: I gave demos to at least 2000 people between 2013 and 2015 using my personal device. I also discussed at length with people that were and weren't a part of the program on how the device could improve and how public concerns(such as the camera) could be taken account of. Many were excited about it, and likely we will see it or something similar to it come up within the next couple years successfully.

    • @cooleymovies
      @cooleymovies 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's why it was held back they needed stronger magnets and that being said I think parts will still fall off just not as massively as they had done before

    • @AndrewMeyer
      @AndrewMeyer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nathan Buth Glass didn't have a price point. It never got out of the explorer program, so we'll never know what the price for the consumer model might have been.

    • @NathanButh
      @NathanButh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andrew Meyer it wound up not being exclusive. after a few months anybody could join the program in the US and a while later in the UK. The price was $1500 though which wound up effectively alienating it from the normal everyday people that wanted it as a consumer device.
      Heck, the only reason I could even remotely justify the cost was to have a developer device on a platform that could become big(like those who bought the original Oculus Rift).

It's disappointing that the GPU, CPU, battery, and screen are part of the frame, but it makes sense. I totally understand why they did it, but it is disappointing.

    f this the cpu gpu battery and screen are all integrated into the midframe. Thats means that the midframe will be extremely expensive as you cant replace those parts individually. This is a different phone then originally promised and not for the better. I was anticipating something like the original design were nearly everything was individually removable. In your attempts to make this a more mainstream project you have forgotten many of the original goals and developments of this project. Please return to your original design as that was something that was truly revolutionary.

    • @autbo
      @autbo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @TheLingo56
      @TheLingo56 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Explosive Idiocy It could be that the CPU inside the display is a weak one just to get the phone to work when the exterior CPU is unplugged. Adding more horsepower or battery outside can still very much be a thing, and depending on the internal CPU and GPU the display could also still be quite cheap.

    Idea: Make a case for spare battery modules that doubles as a power bank. If you're low on juice, just swap the battery modules and place the other battery in the case and it will charge. You can even make it charge wirelessly by putting the essential parts on the modules themselves and having a place for the modules.
    A normal module case is good too. Just so people can have their extra organized.

  • @domcarter2327
    @domcarter2327 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    YAY! ARA finally! Although I'm a tad disappointed they couldn't get the electro-permanent magnets to work, that looked cool. Also the CPU and GPU aren't contained in modules and neither is the screen, so the phone will have to be updated if you want those things to be upgraded..

    • @ZettabyteGamer
      @ZettabyteGamer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ya I am a tad bit disappointed about the screen, CPU, and GPU being included in the base phone. It makes sense, but the base phone is sure to be $200 - $300 now, and you have to buy a whole new one when you want a new component included in the frame.

    • @domcarter2327
      @domcarter2327 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah exactly, I see why they had to do it, the original endo was quite sophisticated there had to be cuts. Also I don't even know what would happen if someone removed a processing module while powered on. Could cause permanent damage?

    • @ZettabyteGamer
      @ZettabyteGamer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Dom Carter I wouldn't think it would cause permanent damage, but who knows. Upgrading the screen, GPU, CPU, and RAM independently were what I was looking forward to most. I guess we can't always get what we want though. ARA is still a very cool project in my eyes, and depending on the components in the frame on the consumer launch I will probably still be buying it.

    The project was about keeping a phone longer buy replacing easily the parts that don't work or slow your device in the future. Now it's just a better LG G5. A way to consume more and not to keep your phone longer.

    The idea of customizing your phone in this way is extremely appealing. it is a "have it your way" society. this business model works and will be more prevalent as we move ever closer to singularity. in fact the phone function will likely become a secondary function, just making this, mobile tailored tech. despite what some might think. this is a huge step in the right direction. googles stock is rising!

    Anyone talking about losing the pieces, they've given specifics at the start of the project that they're held in magnetically and can be released. The magnets will probably be strong enough to not have to worry about this unless your use includes harsh movement.
    BUT, they also said that they were planning to set up 3d printers in the shops that sell them to print custom sleeves to fit the phones. Those would definitely prevent the pieces from falling out.

    Aside from things like the first laptop and the actual smartphone itself, this definitely has the potential to be one of the most dynamic and coolest computer innovations of all time. If third party module producers start to get onboard and add real depth and thoughtful innovation to the pool of available modules, the sky's the limit for this thing. To me the device is a bit "before it's time" and has potential to take over the #1 spot or sadly turn into nothing. Definitely will be looking into the initial release of this phone.

Can you imagine you could have a very specific phone for every need you desire? , and then being able to replace a number of modular parts just to meet that specific need...

    I am so disappointed. The original idea I read about year or 2 ago was so good. But unfortunately because of humans becoming more and more stupid every day, the only parts we would get to change are parts like speaker, camera etc., which completely takes away the original idea of the whole project.
    Sorry, but at the point where still you can only choose 10% or even less of parts to the phone, it's just better idea to buy something made by big company like Samsung, Sony, etc. My overall prediction is that this will be a massive failure and people will stick to already built phones even harder. It's shame though, I thought this could've taught some people about how phones actually work.

      +DryBones81 I completely agree. I hope that they release iterations of it later that do allow you to switch individual computing components. But the primary issue I have with the new version, is that it doesn't even allow you to switch out the screen. Even that would have been a huge selling point for those that break screens kinda often, and would not add unneeded complexity to the idea of the phone.

    • @metarotta
      @metarotta 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +MMSTC Smash Exactly. One big thing I also noticed is that considering how quickly technology evolves, you would need to swap important every few year (the components these days become obsolete quickly). Because of the idiotic plan change Google did, you would basicly have to swap to new frame every few years. >_< To be honest, I don't know why they are still trying to make this work when they already took the fun away from it.
