I used to be one of those “team player” employees. When the pandemic hit, my office couldn’t fully close because of the type of work we did. Regulations wouldn’t allow for certain documents to be signed electronically so someone needed to be there to receive mail. That ended up being my responsibility. Everyone else who got to work from home would email me documents and I would print them out, mail them, and then when they were returned I would scan them to whomever it was for. When I eventually got COVID, and had to stay home, everyone was pretty quiet when asked if they wouldn’t mind covering for me. After allll of that, my review simply just stated “meets expectations” and I was denied my normal yearly raise. So yeah, I no longer break my back for my job. I do my work and then live my life.

Where I work they started accepting Amazon returns in our shipping department which is now a good sized chunk of our business but they didn't allow enough hours on the clock to cover for it so we are stretched so thin that if just one person calls out we're screwed and stressed out the whole day. It seems this how corporations make money now, by understaffing and underpaying so most people like me have zero loyalty and are soft quitting while looking for better opportunities.

No, no, no that is not okay. That is exactly why I'm going to start acting this way. I did that so that I would get noticed and I would get promoted. Bad middle managers are a liability to the employER, not just the employee. They can do huge damage over time in lost productivity, underperforming teams and low retention of trained and skilled employees.
They drive the most motivated / highest skilled people to move on; the employer ends up with mediocre employees willing to put up with mistreatment as they have few other options.

At every level, disconnected, out-of-touch management allows havoc to entrench itself. Only the presence of able managers with VISION and EHTHICS can root out toxicity. In the USA's present culture of 'Greed is good' and focus on quarterly results - at the expense of long term ones -

I got to where I am by working harder than everyone else. That means going over and above what’s expected. This in turn gives me 2 things. 1, additional experience over my peers, 2, opportunities to work on career advancing projects because my employer valued my work ethic.
Now that I employ staff, I don’t expect any more from my staff, but I can also say that those who go over and above get the better jobs and opportunities and grow. That’s just how it goes.

I never wasted so much of my time, life, effort, sleep, and mental health on a job until I got my first official job as an adult at 18... (worked odd jobs for family/friends plus volunteer work growing up)
That place drained the hell out of me, and I was seething with just hate, anger and dread by the time I left, for myself and others, even those I actually loved to work with on my shifts!
I just ended up resenting it all and only got the courage to leave cause a family member was ill in the hospital in a different state, and we weren't sure what was going to happen.
I put in a week of PTO, only to be denied the full time, given only 2 days (even after explaining why I needed to go) all because other managers were off during that time or calling out "sick" all the freaking time...
I wasn't even a manager but knew how to do their job, better than some of them.
All because the higher-ups were too lazy to walk to the store from the office and do their jobs...
