You might also like to try laying your copper pieces on a bed of crushed salt n vinegar crisps, with an other layer of crushed crisps on top - you can get amazing patterns of patina that way.
Recycled Parts 4 Art yes I do. The fat in the crisp fragments adheres to the metal and that's what helps create the interesting patterns in the patina. Fun eh?
Honestly, I do not appreciate old looking metal. Hmmm. Blue! Lapis Lazuli Blue! Holy Carp! This does not look old. And I am hooked. Thank you. Blessings now.
Honestly, I've tried name brands and non name brands, just use a clear spray. I prefer matte but depending on what your goal is for your pieces, you may want to use a gloss.
I have some copper knife handles I want to age. Would the finish wear off in my pocket or on my hands or does it form a really good bond with the copper?
I can't honestly answer this question as I've never put something I've patina'd in my pocket. You could try the technique and carry it around with you as a test to see what happens. Would be nice if you came back to let us know. Seems someone else is wondering the same thing. Thank you for watching!
Great information presented in the most entertaining way. Lauged out loud more than one time. Love the commentary and the philosophy along the way. Recognize the Raisin Man- bet you got that from Hardee's sometime in the early 80's? Thank you for making this available!
Does this deform thin metal like a lighter shell? Should something like wax be placed in the hinge so it won’t weaken or bend? Or does it not hurt it? Thanks.
Hey I really enjoyed the Video and your art! But please wear gloves and in the future put ammonia at the end (and maybe work outside). I used to work in a chemistry lab and that made me so nervous. it is really unhealthy and can damage your lungs and eyes badly. also coppersulfate (the most gorgeous blue in my opinion) is unhealthy when ingested, so I recommend you just wear some gloves. :) I dont like to tell people what to do, but it is Pretty dangerous. Stay save and artsy! ^^
I seem to ruin each craft brush with ProtectaClear. Should I dip them in paint thinner? Or not use a brush? Suggestions for frequent small jewelry components /pieces
So the fumes from ammonia is not hurting you, making you breath a little harder? And what about gloves . I spent hours trying to clean a tray from this , ☺️
Amazing thank you! Beautiful blue...love the finished art...how fun! I did watch through to the end...that is a thing with me. Could you please let me know what fixative you used?
Hi Shannon, I use, when I use it, I don't always.... Krylon, Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating in a spray can for a Gloss finish OR if you prefer a matte finish, use the matte. You can get it at Home Depot or a store like that. Thanks for watching to the end!
I have a bunch of solid brass hardware I am trying to darken... I keep getting pink. Ugh. After 2 days. Still pink. Im thinking amonia is what I need. No other recipes mentioned it. So thank you. And I will try again. Your way. :)
@@MildaMade sorry for the delayed response, I didnt get the chemical result I wanted. I eneded up baking the pieces at a couple hundred degrees saturated with amonia and salt and I got the eclectic array of colors then. Reds. Oranges and some blue/green. The brass I had had been sealed (covered) and I used acetone to get it down to bare metal. But it was harder than it should have been to achieve "aged"
Hi Susana, I would dump it unless you plan on using it again the next day. You can dump it outside or in the house, people use it for cleaning so I don't think that would be a problem. 💚
I'm use a lot of copper and brass but want to try silver, but don't want to spend too much can I patina nickel silver or another kind of silver that's less expensive than sterling?
That's cool. I like the way you curled the pieces. The stamp looks perfect on it. Will the same technique work on aluminum? I don't think I have any copper.
Hi, Well from what I have read rust never really stops rusting. You can spray it with a varnish to slow it down though. I love the way it looks and don't worry about it too much. If you are working on something where it really matters, give it a few coats of spray varnish. Thanks for watching!
Recycled Parts 4 Art thank you so much, I'm going to try renessance was and a spray sealer, hopefully it won't react too much with the skin and keeps it nice as long as possible. I have 1 other question and would love to hear from an experience person. How do I properly dipose the used ( copper filled) ammonia and the water I rinse it with ? I can't really find any information about safely disposing it. Some say dilute it with water, but I'm afraid it will be harmful to aquatic beings. Right now I'm just storing it to take it waste place but I'm curious how you handle it and if there is an easier way. Thank you

Brass is a copper alloy. Copper/Brass/Bronze....if something works on one it almost always works on all 3. (Like Ferric Chloride will etch all 3.)

@JeriBellini can you do anything with it after this process or should you make your piece ready to go then do this as the last step?
@@jspaz9341 Either way I think would work. It's not like it rubs off... I'm so glad you are enjoying it! 💜
Would it work if you soaked cotton balls soaked with the ammonia and vinegar in the condiment containers? No spill but fumes?

Hi there! I have a brass watch bazel do you think this work?
Loved the video. What is a fixative? Varnish?
Yes, it comes in a spray can. Krylon is one of the name brands. 💛
@@JeriBellini thanks!
How can i keep that color mrs , any thing tip that i can keep that color for long time ? Big thank
spray it with varnish
Just wondering what to use as a fixative?
Any Spray varnish in a can.
Nice! How do you get brass to get a greenish peacock coloration?
Try this...
Mix 4 ounces hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 ounce of white vinegar, and 1/2 tablespoon salt. Brush it on and leave it for awhile.
I have some copper knife handles I want to age. Would the finish wear off in my pocket or on my hands or does it form a really good bond with the copper?

Any clear spray will work, like Krylon.

Oh I'm so glad! It's an easy fast way to alter your metal! 💚
Very cool! So you have to use Kosher Salt? Is that what you are saying? I LOVE the blue colour. Thanks a bunch. Kathie 🐢
I like the kosher salt but use whatever you have.
Will this work on brass ?
It’s been years since I’ve done this, give it a try! 🙏
I have had luck using ammonia on paper towels ,Seems to work better .
does it do same color on brass thank you
Every metal looks a bit different. Experiment to see what you like best.
Thanks Jeri!! I loved it!! Now to look for some copper lol!!! Always, Leslie
Hey Leslie, you can also use brass or nickel silver! FUN!
Thanks for the info, I just now found your video.
What type & brand of fixative do you use or recommend?
Any kind of spray varnish will do it.
what happens if you put the cooper directly into the ammonia?
I can't tell you, except sometimes it does spill out of the cap and doesn't really seem to make a difference.
can we do same things for brass?
Try it, see what happens!
Are the washers copper or brass?
It's SO long ago that I made that video but I'm going to guess copper. Thanks for watching! 🩷
Does this deform thin metal like a lighter shell? Should something like wax be placed in the hinge so it won’t weaken or bend? Or does it not hurt it? Thanks.
You are deforming the metal but if you put a sealer over it when you're done, it should be fine and won't keep oxidizing.

no, it's just a capful.
If you put a vinyl sticker on it first, and remove it after, will the part under the sticker stay shiny?

What finishing product are you referring to?
A Krylon spray or something similar.
Do we NEED the other type of salt?
Just use whatever salt you have. The larger salt crystals will leave a slightly different look.

Nickel Silver does not contain ANY Silver.

I'm using a cap full of ammonia and work next to a window.
It’s poisonous. The beautiful blue and green, Encapsulate it if you love it. Breathing it is dangerous.
Can you use bleach instead of ammonia?
