Hypnotic. One of my favorite cat power songs. ps: did you know that it's not cat (meow meow) power, rather, the name came while they were coming up with a band name and a guy walked in wearing a caterpillar power tools hat & they decided it would be "cat power"
I bought it this because it was kind of the end of the 'Riot Grrrl" movement or whatever- and Bands like Hole and 7 Year Bitch were putting out lousy records (i'm talking later 90s output once again, as both have terrific early 90s records) and she was on Matador and Sonic Youth & Beasties really liked her. I got it off BMG (!!!- you all ready know it was a scam on my pre-treen end) and to this very day, I try to listen all the time. This is a perfect album.
I first got this album in 2006 on the recommendation of a friend from university called Charlotte. I only made three friends in those three years. One of them was a guy called Joe. For the first two years we became best friends, but were both so awkward we couldn't talk to girls. Finally, in the third year, we made friends with two girls: Charlotte, and another girl called Patti. Charlotte was a strange, tiny but cool person whose music tastes were nothing like anything I knew. We would go round to her place. She played the old NES console. She would come to ours and we would smoke weed and watch Twin Peaks. We felt cool for the first time. She said Moon Pix by Cat Power was her favourite album of all time. I had never heard of Cat Power nor this album. At this time I didn't listen to the album. I had a massive crush on Patti and got mad that it wasn't reciprocated, and got even more mad that she got together with Joe. Looking back, I wish I had just let it happen. I was just a kid, really, but didn't know it at the time. I got so mad I stopped talking to both of them. University ended that summer. Not only had university come to an end, but so had my friendship with Patti and Joe. Charlotte still hung around, but she was the last one left. We stayed in contact, used MSN Messenger, went to London once or twice. She stayed over once but it was strange having her round my parents' house. I was ashamed. Like seeing everything she thought I was now gone, the person I was reduced. In university the world felt new, felt young, full of possibilities. Now there was desolation. Finally, I listened to this album. Finally, I understood what Charlotte was talking about. I wrote a story that was just a rant about humanity. "When no one is around, love will always love you," sang Cat Power, as I wrote and wrote and wrote. After writing, I would be upset for reasons I couldn't fathom at the time. Charlotte tried her best to console me, but she and I both knew we weren't going to stay friends, not whilst things were this bad. It was a very hot summer. A hot, and sad summer, with this album as the soundtrack. Months passed. I got a job. I worked in a dark stock cupboard day after day, numbing myself to my self-imposed loneliness. Fortunately, around December, something in me just snapped. I decided I had to forgive Joe. He was my best friend, after all. Turned out within a week of us talking again, he and Patti broke up. We both broke away from her. Last time I checked she's got kids now. Funny thing is, I don't miss her at all. But Charlotte feels even now like a loss, especially when I listen to this album. Try as we might, even though me and Joe tried to get back to talk to Charlotte, she was gone. Her MySpace page had closed. She never replied to emails. She didn't want to know. Time passed. People come and go. I got older. I wonder what Charlotte is doing now - whether she still thinks this is her favourite album, or whether she's discovered somebody new. For me, the strange thing is, listening to this album is like stopping time. It's as if for me, Cat Power and Charlotte are the same person. Every time I listen to Moon Pix, I think about that summer. I regret everything I did that ended up with her going with no explanation. Maybe it was my fault for pushing her away. Even though she's forgotten me I'm sure, even though she's out there living life with new friends, married with kids, I wonder if she ever thinks about that brief time in university when the world seemed young and full of possibility, and whether she thinks about the summer of 2006 when everything seemed to have turned to sadness. I don't know why I wrote this. I just get so many feelings from this album. Mostly just sad and nostalgic. "When no one is around, love will always love you."
thanks for sharing such a heartfelt and nostalgic story from your life with us. Music does that, It is funny how an album, song or artist just floods you with momeries of people and times gone.

yellow nailpolish, 90's touch
Hadn't heard this in a year and for some reason it's been on repeat in my head all day
My god, she is gorgeous
I bought it this because it was kind of the end of the 'Riot Grrrl" movement or whatever- and Bands like Hole and 7 Year Bitch were putting out lousy records (i'm talking later 90s output once again, as both have terrific early 90s records) and she was on Matador and Sonic Youth & Beasties really liked her. I got it off BMG (!!!- you all ready know it was a scam on my pre-treen end) and to this very day, I try to listen all the time. This is a perfect album.
AND !!!! The most genuine and soulful, thoughtful solid songwriter and singer I feel. Real songs about REAL shit. And yes gorgeous as heaven.
She is so beautiful and talented!
@@anthonysmyth2392 did you say something dinosaur?
Thanks for sharing. I think if we're honest, we've all had an experience like yours. Mine was called Naomi. She ended up being something big with the fledgling Nickleodeon in the UK.
It's been nearly 30 years, and I still wonder.....
I really can feel it, mate.
Bittersweet taste as it is.
Let's keep the past as a nostalgic and .. stay there.
Here is some songs I want to recommend you.

Saw Blueberry and Cat stunned me real good.Gorgeous for sure.
Guitar, drums, and voice.
this was my misfit anthem when i was 15 years old in high school (2008), now seeing the clip for the first time it all makes sense lol
It's hard to believe this was in 97. Her style looks 25 years ahead of this time, as well as the sound. She's hot asf.
Dude it’s nuts to see her this young . Yea really ahead of her time . True talent. Man how old is she in this . This has to be before moonpix
