Fantastic concert! I have a special place in my heart for amateur lutenists of antiquity with a day job who rose to prominence (Logy, Count Bergen, Prince Lobkowitz), especially physicians like Thomas Campion. I had never heard of Felix Platter before and this was a great introduction. However, can we please have a moratorium on immensely talented musicians who can pluck and sing at the same time? It makes the rest of us who can only do one at a time feel very inadequate!
Outstanding concept and execution. Tabea Schwartz is to be commended for organizing this fantastic and sublime program. One question: many of the pieces have German texts but French titles; does this mean Felix Platter left many sets of lyrics without melodies, and Ms. Schwartz needed to select appropriate melodies to set them to (if Platter didn't make clear which tunes he intended)? If so, she did an excellent job, because the text setting never seems forced or awkward.
Thanks for your appreciation of the programme and the work behind it! The explanation of the research process can be read in the ReRenaissance programme booklet by Tabea Schwartz. Programmbook: www.rerenaissance.ch/events/08-12-23/neu-glickhaftig-bs/#programm The main indicator to match the German texts with the French chansons is indeed given in Felix Platter’s collection. Many of the poems carry the title „in der weis von“ which can be translated as „to the melody of“. In some cases these references are less clear than in others due to misspellings or lost repertoire but as shown in this selection it is worth going through this process - and there would be even more songs to be rediscovered.
