oh man, I tried using a squat toilet once and failed. That's what I get for skipping leg day all my life. Besides, I don't think my legs can handle trying to use a squat toilet after pedaling for hours. The part waking up to a group of dancing ajummas is hilarious. Looking forward to the next series or adventures.
Hahah squat toilets certainly take time and practice @blackbelt2000! I still don't know how to use them properly after about 12 years living in Asia, and they are scary still to this day! Thank you so much!

We really want to get Surly bikes at some point just so we don't have to worry as much about them breaking down, but will have to wait a bit as it's an expensive upgrade, and I think our Trek bikes have a bit left in them (hopefully). For now while the weather is nice I think I'm going to try and cycle a bit off of the paths and hopefully discover some interesting things along the way! Definitely in the mood to explore some new places I haven't seen!
Adding Tips for way to transport from Incheon airport to Seoul from 2026 - Currently Bridge is under construction which connect Island where airport is to Chung-Ra station across the sea and it supposed to be built up by end of 2025. The bridge will prepare the bike path together, so when it will be available, moving from airport to Seoul by riding bike will be possible.
Thank you for the videos and thoughtful information. How was it for finding water along the cycle paths? Are there water stations? Is the water okay to drink from the tap? I always bring a filter with me but just wanted to pick your brain on the topic. Flying into Seoul tomorrow, cant wait to bicycle the country.
Thanks so much @54007batman! There are water stations along the ride that are safe to drink, but not super common and sometimes they are turned off. The taps in Korea are all tested to be safe for drinking, but Koreans tend not to drink water out of the tap, so I filter it with a Brita filter before drinking it. If you filter the tap water you'll be 100% fine, and even if you don't it's apparently safe.
Hello there! I already booked my reservation ticket from Seoul to Cheongna International City with my assembled bike on it to the AREX website. But my question is, how can get the bicycle carry-on reservation certificate? Do I need to print it before showing to the staff member? I got this information from the AREX email after reserving that says: 직원이 요구 시 자전거 휴대승차 예약증을 제시하여야 합니다. Based on the papago translation it means "must present a bicycle portable ride reservation card upon request." Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help and cheers! Happy cycling! :)

When I reserved the subway and went on, nobody even cared, so I would just take a screenshot of your reservation with your phone and board the subway normally, and if someone asks you then show them the screenshot. I don't think the system is very "official" so don't worry about it too much! All the best and happy cycling!

@soenjongboel7832 we use the BigBlue Solar Panel Charger amzn.to/4dv3UtI which works pretty well, and can charge a 10,000 mAh power bank to 70-90% throughout the ride while charging my camera batteries. Drones are allowed in a lot of countryside areas in Korea, and can fly without a license if they are lighter than 250g. Check out the app Drone Fly (드론플라이) to see the areas. We use the GoPro 10 and DJI Action 4 for action cameras these days. The DJI is better in my opinion because of its low light capabilities and it's a lot more convenient to mount with its magnetic attachment thing.

I was adopted when I was 6 years old .We planned the flight and hotel with AWOL . The first 2 nights and the last night . The tour starts in Seoul to Busan and than up to Geojin-ri; back by Cheongpyeong to Seoul. 🤩 And we love camping ⛺️

Stay safe and avoid the highways whenever possible. It's worth it to go up extra hills in my opinion. And definitely don't be afraid to pitch your tent on some of the countryside pagodas as long as there aren't too many people around. If they get mad then just apologize and leave. People were generally very friendly to us, so hopefully they will be to you as well! Have an amazing trip! 😊
How safe is bike from thieves in Korea. Do you need to lock your bike when you are going to restaurant or convenient stores? Do you leave it unlocked if you are going in and out of store for few minutes?
Great question @joshyi9228! Korea is one of the safest countries in the world with almost no theft, so I personally don't lock up my bike when I'm just going into a store really quick for something. However, I've heard of people getting their bikes stolen here before, so if you are going into a restaurant or something where you can't see your bike, it's a good idea to lock it up just so you can eat with some peace of mind.

I plan on flying to Korea today for 5 week bike camping trip and I bought gopro to document my travel. I found out testing while biking that gopro audio quality is quite bad with winds blowing. I envy your audio quality on your bike videos. How do you do it?
@joshyi9228 as a camera nerd I love these types of questions! 😁 I'm going to get nerdy here, so TL:DR I use a DJI Mic with wind screen and record my audio externally. If you want good audio, you need the microphone to be as close to your mouth as possible, and just using a GoPro itself will have too much wind noise. One option is to get a wind screen for your GoPro and try to talk to the camera as close as possible, but I've found that it makes filming annoying with the foam wind screen surrounding the GoPro (big/bulky and can't see what I'm filming very easily), so I use the DJI Mic with a wind screen attached to record, and the transmitter has a mic built in and records internally so you don't need any other accessories. Looks like it's about $167 USD if you just want one transmitter/receiver (amzn.to/3U7NmQG), and the receiver is needed to change your settings. I keep my mic recording at -6db for reference. A cheaper alternative would be to buy a lavalier mic with a wind screen and clip it to your shirt (we use this one: amzn.to/4d7uMAD) and you can record the audio straight into your phone, or buy a smaller 3.5mm audio recorder (watch reviews on TH-cam before you buy) and just keep that in your pocket while riding. Keep in mind, if you record audio externally like me, you have to synchronize the audio and video in your editing software, which is a big hassle for a lot of people, but most softwares can do it automatically as long as you know which audio file and video file should be linked together. I make sure to have the time set very accurately for my cameras and audio, and then I just sort it all by "Time Recorded" and it's really easy to match them up. Also I just leave my audio recording all day as it doesn't take up a lot of file size, and I make sure that the batteries don't run dry. Hope that helps a bit, and good luck!
Another great video! I have also a question: I would need a SIM card for my Mobile Router (MiFi), rather than for my phone. Where would be the best to get that? I suppose not in the airport? And what company would you recommend? Or is free WiFi available everywhere so that I don’t even need a SIM card for Korea? Thanks for your advice! Erik (Belgium)
Hello Erik, great question! The cheapest place I've found in Korea is Chingu Mobile (chingumobile.com) and it seems like you can pick the SIM card up right at the airport if you book it in advance. There are so many new companies popping up these days for SIM cards with all of the tourists coming in too, so I'd do a little comparison online as my information could be a bit outdated now. Also there is WiFi at most public places like bus terminals, cafes, parks, etc, but it would still be good to get a sim card.
Thanks for all the great info you've put out in this series! On the driving, it's certainly better than it was when I first got here, but just a few years back my wife and I had our most stressful cycling experience ever on the back roads in Namyangju. We were riding into Seoul along the river path and had taken a detour to look at a piece of land. The way people barrel around those curves, even passing on them... Lesson learned. And deeply ingrained. Never again will I ride along a road with no bike path.
Thanks so much Mike! I can't imagine how much driving has improved since you first got here. You're right that even to this day there is still a bit too much of a 빨리빨리 attitude when it comes to driving, and it's definitely best to avoid cycling on the roads shared with the cars whenever possible!

When cycling the Cross-Country path, or any area outside the big cities how much cash would you recommend having? I read that many rural areas don’t take Visa card, or may not even have ATMs. Is that true?
Good question @jonahwillis2781! These days the only time you need to pay by cash here is when recharging your transportation card or sometimes buying things in the market. Pretty much every place (including countryside) will take card now with the exception of traditional markets or street food vendors sometimes, so just having about 200K KRW in cash should be enough just to help you in case you lost your card or it's having troubles.
Thank you for all your videos. I really enjoy them and have learned so much. I was curious about how hard it is to find foods like Avocados, Tortillas and other Latino products. As well as their prices, which I'm sure are not cheap. I have seen many Latinos on TH-cam that live in Korea. I wonder how hard it is to find foods that remind them of home.
Thanks so much @marcomorales920! Avocados and tortillas are getting a lot more common here, and can be found in most supermarkets in Korea now, but it'll be harder to find all of the spices you need probably. In that case it's easy to find them on Coupang, which is Korea's version of Amazon.

In the video, I see that you often spent the night in tents in densely populated areas. If we look for a place for a tent away from populated areas, will we have similar problems with finding a suitable place and safety. for example, in a forest area or on the bank of a river. Thank you very much for the nice message @vitalykonev6486! There are definitely places next to the rivers or in the forest to camp at too, but Korea is quite a populated country so it's not easy to find places without people around unless you go quite a bit off the bike path, and even then it might be hard to find good land that isn't privately owned. I've used the satellite view/street view on Naver Maps before and had success, but always found that being close to a bathroom made things a lot easier.
You have to do 대형폐기물 신청 (registration of disposal of large objects) for the district you live in. Just type in "(Your location) 대형폐기물" onto Google and the website will appear.

Great video! First one I watched (thanks Tim Travis for the link). It's been too many years since I've ridden the any of the 4-Rivers/S2B paths. This video is inspiring. Although I much prefer the hotel option for overnights. I've always found the hotels near bike paths are more than willing to accommodate cyclists. Bikes in room, or in lobby, or a secure (enclosed) 'bike garage' outside. I've only made a reservation once.😊

I'm tossing up whether I should build the bike up at the airport and ride to accommodation in Seoul or bite the bullet and pay $80AUS and catch a taxi with the bike still boxed. Excellent information! Lots of nostalgia with those stealth camping spots :). If planning to stay the night at a sauna (jjimsilbang), I'd recommend making sure that it's open for the night. Got kicked out after 10pm when planning to sleep the night there. Luckily there was a mountainous forest nearby to sleep the night...

Help. I'm currently in Korea in middle of 국토종주. Everything is going good so far except for kakaomap. In Google map, I can' turn off the phone and when I turn the phone back on, it shows me where I am without missing a beat. In Kakao map, when I turn off the phone for more than say 5 minutes, I have to redo the whole directions again. I tried to keep kakao map all the time, but then I went through three power banks and forced to stay in a motel to recharge my power bank. I brought the power Banks as my original plan was to camp all the time. Is there a way to use kakao map without getting it on all the time?
@@joshyi9228 hi there! Kakao Map isn't programmed as well as Google Maps I don't think, so when I use it I usually have to keep my phone screen on the whole time as well unfortunately. So now I'll tell my girlfriend we don't have to cause we can just watch your great videos. We both love biking but not taking a shower and sleeping on the ground... hell no, she wouldn't stop complaining about the bugs, smell and all the dirtiness. Not sure if that's even a word. LOL 👏
@2GoodLookin hahaha really appreciate it! Cycling is one of the most amazing ways to enjoy Korea, and definitely go on a shorter bike ride with her near Seoul if you guys are into biking. Check out Mangwon Han River Park (망원한강공원) and Hongje Stream (홍제천) if you're in the North, or Tan-cheon (탄천) near Jamsil if you are in the South. Both pretty relaxing rides, and you can easily make it back to where you are staying so you don't have to camp!

When I reserved the subway and went on, nobody even cared, so I would just take a screenshot of your reservation with your phone and board the subway normally, and if someone asks you then show them the screenshot. I don't think the system is very "official" so don't worry about it too much! All the best and happy cycling!

What do you use as solar panel and action camera ? Are drones allowed ?
@soenjongboel7832 we use the BigBlue Solar Panel Charger amzn.to/4dv3UtI which works pretty well, and can charge a 10,000 mAh power bank to 70-90% throughout the ride while charging my camera batteries. Drones are allowed in a lot of countryside areas in Korea, and can fly without a license if they are lighter than 250g. Check out the app Drone Fly (드론플라이) to see the areas.
We use the GoPro 10 and DJI Action 4 for action cameras these days. The DJI is better in my opinion because of its low light capabilities and it's a lot more convenient to mount with its magnetic attachment thing.

Stay safe and avoid the highways whenever possible. It's worth it to go up extra hills in my opinion. And definitely don't be afraid to pitch your tent on some of the countryside pagodas as long as there aren't too many people around. If they get mad then just apologize and leave. How safe is bike from thieves in Korea. Do you need to lock your bike when you are going to restaurant or convenient stores? Do you leave it unlocked if you are going in and out of store for few minutes?
Great question @joshyi9228! Korea is one of the safest countries in the world with almost no theft, so I personally don't lock up my bike when I'm just going into a store really quick for something. However, I've heard of people getting their bikes stolen here before, so if you are going into a restaurant or something where you can't see your bike, it's a good idea to lock it up just so you can eat with some peace of mind.

I plan on flying to Korea today for 5 week bike camping trip and I bought gopro to document my travel. I found out testing while biking that gopro audio quality is quite bad with winds blowing. I envy your audio quality on your bike videos. How do you do it?
@joshyi9228 as a camera nerd I love these types of questions! 😁 I'm going to get nerdy here, so TL:DR I use a DJI Mic with wind screen and record my audio externally.
If you want good audio, you need the microphone to be as close to your mouth as possible, and just using a GoPro itself will have too much wind noise.
One option is to get a wind screen for your GoPro and try to talk to the camera as close as possible, but I've found that it makes filming annoying with the foam wind screen surrounding the GoPro (big/bulky and can't see what I'm filming very easily), so I use the DJI Mic with a wind screen attached to record, and the transmitter has a mic built in and records internally so you don't need any other accessories. Looks like it's about $167 USD if you just want one transmitter/receiver (amzn.to/3U7NmQG), and the receiver is needed to change your settings. I keep my mic recording at -6db for reference.
A cheaper alternative would be to buy a lavalier mic with a wind screen and clip it to your shirt (we use this one: amzn.to/4d7uMAD) and you can record the audio straight into your phone, or buy a smaller 3.5mm audio recorder (watch reviews on TH-cam before you buy) and just keep that in your pocket while riding.
Keep in mind, if you record audio externally like me, you have to synchronize the audio and video in your editing software, which is a big hassle for a lot of people, but most softwares can do it automatically as long as you know which audio file and video file should be linked together. I make sure to have the time set very accurately for my cameras and audio, and then I just sort it all by "Time Recorded" and it's really easy to match them up. Also I just leave my audio recording all day as it doesn't take up a lot of file size, and I make sure that the batteries don't run dry.

Hello Erik, great question! The cheapest place I've found in Korea is Chingu Mobile (chingumobile.com) and it seems like you can pick the SIM card up right at the airport if you book it in advance. There are so many new companies popping up these days for SIM cards with all of the tourists coming in too, so I'd do a little comparison online as my information could be a bit outdated now.
Also there is WiFi at most public places like bus terminals, cafes, parks, etc, but it would still be good to get a sim card.
Thanks for all the great info you've put out in this series! On the driving, it's certainly better than it was when I first got here, but just a few years back my wife and I had our most stressful cycling experience ever on the back roads in Namyangju. We were riding into Seoul along the river path and had taken a detour to look at a piece of land. The way people barrel around those curves, even passing on them... Lesson learned. And deeply ingrained. Never again will I ride along a road with no bike path.

Bicycle theft in South Korea? It could be so harsh to wake up and find your bike stolen in the middle of trip.
@zmalol bicycle theft in Korea is not super common, but I would still lock up your bike when going to a restaurant or staying somewhere the night.
When cycling the Cross-Country path, or any area outside the big cities how much cash would you recommend having? I read that many rural areas don’t take Visa card, or may not even have ATMs. Is that true?
Good question @jonahwillis2781! These days the only time you need to pay by cash here is when recharging your transportation card or sometimes buying things in the market. Pretty much every place (including countryside) will take card now with the exception of traditional markets or street food vendors sometimes, so just having about 200K KRW in cash should be enough just to help you in case you lost your card or it's having troubles.
Thank you for all your videos. I really enjoy them and have learned so much. I was curious about how hard it is to find foods like Avocados, Tortillas and other Latino products. As well as their prices, which I'm sure are not cheap. I have seen many Latinos on TH-cam that live in Korea. I wonder how hard it is to find foods that remind them of home.
Thanks so much @marcomorales920! Avocados and tortillas are getting a lot more common here, and can be found in most supermarkets in Korea now, but it'll be harder to find all of the spices you need probably. In that case it's easy to find them on Coupang, which is Korea's version of Amazon.

In the video, I see that you often spent the night in tents in densely populated areas. If we look for a place for a tent away from populated areas, will we have similar problems with finding a suitable place and safety. for example, in a forest area or on the bank of a river. There are definitely places next to the rivers or in the forest to camp at too, but Korea is quite a populated country so it's not easy to find places without people around unless you go quite a bit off the bike path, and even then it might be hard to find good land that isn't privately owned. I've used the satellite view/street view on Naver Maps before and had success, but always found that being close to a bathroom made things a lot easier.

You have to do 대형폐기물 신청 (registration of disposal of large objects) for the district you live in. Just type in "(Your location) 대형폐기물" onto Google and the website will appear.

Although I much prefer the hotel option for overnights.
I've always found the hotels near bike paths are more than willing to accommodate cyclists. Bikes in room, or in lobby, or a secure (enclosed) 'bike garage' outside. I've only made a reservation once.😊

I'm tossing up whether I should build the bike up at the airport and ride to accommodation in Seoul or bite the bullet and pay $80AUS and catch a taxi with the bike still boxed. It appears that taking a bike on the train is okay sometimes?? Can you take a bike on the ferry? Thanks, your videos are great. Korean Tourism should employ you. Lots of cyclist here in Australia talking about Sth Korea as a cycling destination.

If planning to stay the night at a sauna (jjimsilbang), I'd recommend making sure that it's open for the night. Got kicked out after 10pm when planning to sleep the night there. Luckily there was a mountainous forest nearby to sleep the night...

Help. I'm currently in Korea in middle of 국토종주. Everything is going good so far except for kakaomap. In Google map, I can' turn off the phone and when I turn the phone back on, it shows me where I am without missing a beat. In Kakao map, when I turn off the phone for more than say 5 minutes, I have to redo the whole directions again. I tried to keep kakao map all the time, but then I went through three power banks and forced to stay in a motel to recharge my power bank. I brought the power Banks as my original plan was to camp all the time. Is there a way to use kakao map without getting it on all the time?
@@joshyi9228 hi there! Kakao Map isn't programmed as well as Google Maps I don't think, so when I use it I usually have to keep my phone screen on the whole time as well unfortunately. I don't know if this helps, but here's a GPX file of the whole cross country route (excluding Andong and Chungju Dam), so maybe you could load it into another GPS app and that would work better?

Dude, you rock. I always wondered what it would be like to bike across Korea and now I've seen it all in HD quality. So now I'll tell my girlfriend we don't have to cause we can just watch your great videos. We both love biking but not taking a shower and sleeping on the ground... hell no, she wouldn't stop complaining about the bugs, smell and all the dirtiness. Not sure if that's even a word. LOL 👏
@2GoodLookin hahaha really appreciate it! Cycling is one of the most amazing ways to enjoy Korea, and definitely go on a shorter bike ride with her near Seoul if you guys are into biking. Check out Mangwon Han River Park (망원한강공원) and Hongje Stream (홍제천) if you're in the North, or Tan-cheon (탄천) near Jamsil if you are in the South. Both pretty relaxing rides, and you can easily make it back to where you are staying so you don't have to camp!
