Padre Mike Schmitz, you changed my life 4 years ago when I started listening to The Bible in A Year. Now 4 years later, I'm still reading and spreading the Word daily. Thank you!
Hi, can you elaborate on your personal experience, please? What exactly made Catholicism stand out? Because for me personally, St Jerome’s reluctance toward Deuterocanonical books only moved closer towards the 66-books canon. St Augustine’s writings (although I’ve read only a little so far) have had a profound impact on my faith, and I haven’t seen anything contradictory to other denominations there. That said, I’m glad you’re in RCIA, brother. Salvation doesn’t come from allegiance to any particular denomination, but from our personal relationship with God.
Change to protestant, the pope denounced Jesus last month. Catholicism goes against the Bible. The Bible teaches its only by God's grace do we enter the kingdom of heaven "Sola gratia" the Vatican doctrine says it's by your deeds do you get into heaven. Watch some voddie baucham or wise disciple. I'll keep you in my prayers
@@SteveWest-R215 That’s not true, Cathechism of Catholic Church is clear that Christians cannot get to Heaven without God’s grace. It’s true that they disagree with the doctrine of total depravity (Mike Schmitz even called it a heresy - the only time I’ve heard him speak so harshly, really didn’t like that). But, to be fair, I’m leaning to disagreement with Calvin on that point either (I still consider myself a Protestant). In any case, I don’t think it’s that substantial - both denominations agree on the main point, without Jesus’s sacrifice we cannot be saved. Please don’t say that Catholics won’t be saved. Its a very shallow and dangerous view that takes you away from God. Catholics love God and strive to serve Him well, based on their interpretations of the Scripture. What I like about Mike Schmitz is that he often quotes in his speeches Protestants - CS Lewis, Timothy Keller, even John Eldridge. Protestants also hold in high esteem many Catholics - St Augustine, St Erasmus (he actually agreed with Luther on the main ideas of Reformation), and as far as the Popes go, John Paul II. I believe this is the right way. Only standing united as brothers and sisters in Christ, we can withstand the enormous and unprecedented challenges we face in today’s culture. P.S. there are some self-identifying Christians who embrace radical leftist ideas today - abortions, transgenderism, and infinite number of genders. That is a very recent development and I personally don’t consider them Christians because I don’t believe they actually take the Scripture seriously. I don’t think they even consider themselves Protestants - definitely not in a traditional sense.
@pvkom26 so 26yrs of theology and philosophy study ,studied multiple religions for almost 3 decades, you don't know my background, as I am a preacher. You can watch the pope denounce Jesus it was filmed live. Secondly the Vatican doctrine states opposite of the Bible saying through your deeds you go to heaven. The Bible says is only by the grace of God and our deeds don't amount to much at all. It's states that only the holy trinity hears prayers. Yet catholics pray to saints and Mary and see the trinity as 3 different beings, as though God needs assistants to hear you. That's called polytheism not monotheism. Sorry not sorry. Mike shmitz makes the occasional great sermon. But Mary isn't gonna save your soul.
I wish I would have had a priest like Fr. Mike when I was in college. Thank you Ft. Mike for bringing your passion for christ to our young adult catholics. We all need a priest filled with this much passion for christ!
I am consistently inspired by every single message on this channel. Thank you Fr Mike for this wonderful homily. God bless you and the entire Ascension team❤
I am 72 years old and a catholic all my life. I started about two years reading a chapter every night and has changed me. Thanks Father Mike great Homily.
The best thing to do before you even start reading to Bible is to pray and ask that Christ give you the knowledge the wisdom and understanding that is in the word so that way you would not lean upon your own...
Father Mike, I don’t know anybody who could listen to you two times speed 😂lol! I pray for you and many other priest every single day! May God bless and protect you!
Thank you for this excellent homily! And thank you for the Bible in a Year Podcast! Although I am a lifelong church goer, I was , and still am, amazed at how much of Scripture was left out of our religious education! Thank you for filling in the blanks, and also for your clear explanations!
16:18. "Stop trying to see yourself on every page..." So true. The irony is, most of my life I've been advised to read the bible asking myself where I am in this scenario. When I finally decided to not listen to all this, yes, I fell in with this our God. This homily, Fr. Mike, is what I should have heard 45 years ago. Keep preaching!
I'm on day 149! I spent 8 years in parochial school, and I had NO IDEA what the Bible was about, lol. I just want to say thank you! Thanks to you, Jeff, and Jonathan Roumie on the Hallow app has now made me pretty darn hungry for more pieces of God's story
Jesus, hear my prayers. I’m holding on to my faith. Yet I feel so alone as a single parent things are hard on me I’m constantly struggling to provide the basic necessities for my children both are special needs hear my prayers Lord. Walking with faith not by sight. 💕
I’m a single mom with two boys as well. My oldest has autism. Be strong but don’t be afraid to ask your parish for help. Not everyone wants to help but some do. My prayers for you. Please pray for me
Oh. My. Gosh!!! That story about Jeff Cavins and his childhood home!!!!! Bringing the tears!!! Also, I'm thinking I need to do Bible in a Year again this coming year!
I did that very thing - Bible roulette….’give me the answer…..prove your listening’ it never ended well. Not until I did just what Fr. Mike is saying…..read it without looking for yourself. Even the podcast was hard at certain points but Fr. Mike is the calm voice filled with Gods love, he’s our lens so we can better understand, truly see, hear. When I listen to Fr. Mike I imagine running to God and going in for a hug and Fr. Mike just gets squashed between us. He’s our middle man, the conduit to all our journeys to greater understanding. I am forever thankful for him introducing me to the Man who saved my life. When you radiate love for God you truly do attract good things….i still struggle to hear but I’m listening.
Great advice and inspiration to know our history as Christians. Thank you Father Mike. The ending about the gift Jeff received when visiting his old house was beautiful! God is so special ❤
Such a beautiful homily, thank you for sharing. I am doing Bible in a Year for the 1st time this year. What you said is so true. I’ve read parts of the bible but when you go through the entire story it completes the puzzle. Thank you to you and your team for creating the podcast. God uses online platforms to share his word with the world through people like you. That was a great story about Jeff Cavins returning to the residence where he grew up.
Thank you for motivating me to restart reading the Bible. I will look for God’s heart and what He wants for me. I will “Take and Read” the Bible. I appreciate your message.
What an incredible homily, Fr. Mike! You are right on... just read it! Your Bible in a Year podcast has changed our lives! My husband, Charles, and I started reading the Bible with you in 2020. We were locked down because of COVID, so we were happy to have something constructive to do. We were pretty faithful in our reading, but sometimes we got behind and had to double up. We finished the first year and decided that we would do this every year. This is our 4th time through the Bible and we learn something new each trip, and on Day19 you started signing off... "I cannot wait to see you tomorrow. God bless!" Those words kept us coming back!
Thank you Father Mike. I find myself teaching what The Word means when in debates, rather than be angry with those with little understanding. "...I will teach your ways to the wicked..." ✝️🕊️
I worked in a library for many years. I am doing Bible in a year now. I used to think God would say to me one day, did you read my book? So now at 73 years old I am working on it
The Bible in a year saved me and is one of the reasons I decided to have my marriage validated in the Catholic Church after twelve years of going to mass and not being able to receive. Thank you Father Mike and Jeff Cavins. What an amazing story.
Father, you have knocked it out of the park with this homily! I'm on my 4th time around with Bible in a Year, and I can testify from my heart it is life changing! God's word is absolutely alive, and it changes us from the inside out. But you are so right, we need a teacher. Thank you and Jeff Cavins for being our incredible teachers on BIAY!
I am a lector at church. Whenever I don’t understand what I’m going to read I find the reading from Bible in a Year and listen to your reading and explanation. It helps so much! (Also I use the Ascension app which makes it really easy to find!) on round two of BIY. It’s amazing how I know the story but learn new stuff every time🙂
That's great. If it works for you that's great. Personally I've always kind of figured that the ot reading the Psalm and the epistle were specifically chosen to give us all the context we need for the gospel so if we read all four carefully that will give us context.
Another excellent homily Father Mike. So very interesting. Like the story of Jeff Cavins. I really like listening to him also. I listened to the the BIAY last year. Had never been through the entire Bible before. Inspiring! Thank you.
Fr Mike, I found you through the Hallow app. I also listen to Jeff Cavins. You have changed my understanding of the Bible. There were things I didn’t understand, didn’t feel good about or was confused about and you have changed it all. I love listening to you every day because your passion for the Lord comes through with every word. I can’t thank you enough. I have shared your words with my husband, son and brother. Today my husband and I were sick and wanted to watch Mass online. I decided to see if you had a Mass on TH-cam. I was thrilled to find you. My husband loved your sermon and thanked me for sharing. I pray for you all of the time. God Bless You Fr Mike. 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻 Btw, my husband Kevin is competitive too. He was a hockey player a lot of his life. He also loves to fish and burst out laughing when you told your story. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Father Mike! My husband and I started the Bible in a year program a year ago and because of life in general, and taking care of aging parents, we stopped due to time constraints. I want to start it over again. Something in my life has been missing lately and I think this is it. We still have lots of obligations but I want to make this a priority in my day. God bless you Father Mike!
Fr. Mike, I’ve read the Bible front to back so many times but have never fully knew it until I started The Bible in the Year Reading plan. Thank you for the explanations so now I can fully understand
Great homily. So many strong messages and beautiful witnesses to take away. I especially liked your caution not to read the Bible to find yourself but rather to find God.
We've been reading the Bible all our lives - I'm 64, I have three siblings, and we're all Bible readers. Most of my Catholic friends are Bible readers, also. Many people are under the incorrect impression that Catholics don't read the Bible, but we do!
Good for you! It was not part of my time in the Catholic Church. I always got stuck on Genesis. We studied some of the children's stories as well as Catechism in the separate school system in Toronto, Canada. Most of the scripture was from the Mass.
I'm also that one who needs a guide whenever I read the bible. If I read it and there's a confusion and doubt in me, I make sure to look for explanations on TH-cam or podcast after. And lo and behold, I felt in love with God! We are blesed to be living In the age of the internet. So use it for the good.
Great homily. I set the goal of reading the entire Bible (the 66 books) by the end of the year on January 1. I tried this before, but drifted away by the end of first week. This time I’m still on track. It becomes a habit over time where you simply can’t forget to read the Bible - even if you don’t find time for it throughout the day, it will be on your mind. That’s so cool. I also find that reading commentaries and meditating on the Scripture throughout the day helps to develop love for this habit. The BIY podcast also helps a lot, which for me personally isn’t a substitute for the reading process, but a nice addition to my daily routine to remind myself of what I’ve read. It also helps with the pronunciation of names. Thankful to Ascension and Mike Schmitz for providing these helpful resources.
I'm terrible at remembering to actually read the bible. I have two daily guides that I use that have one or two lines of scripture but not much more. Thank you for the reminder, Father Mike. Hope you had a lovely Sunday.
Hello, perhaps one or two verses per day is not enough for what you’re trying to achieve? It can be great for someone who would meditate on these verses throughout the day (like taking a passage from New Testament and meditating over every word in it, reading commentaries, then seeking to apply it to his or her life throughout the day). That’s great! But if you’ve never read the Bible in its entirety, I wouldn’t recommend such approach. You need to get the entire perspective first, the entire story. If you’re a Catholic, there is a great resource referenced right in this video, which is the Bible in a Year. But not the podcast! Find the Bible in a Year plan. It should be available for download under every the Bible in a Year episode on TH-cam. It says what parts of the Scripture are read on a certain day. Start reading your Bible according to this plan. I wouldn’t suggest just listening. If you want a habit of reading, start reading. But use the plan, because it presents the Bible in more or less chronological timeline which should make understanding of the overarching story much easier. That said, the podcast is awesome, and Fr Mike Schmitz adds some commentary at the end of each episode which can be super helpful. I suggest doing the reading first and then, later when you have time, listening to the podcast episode that corresponds to the day you’ve read (you can find all episodes on TH-cam, Ascension app, or practically any other podcast app). This way you will remind yourself of what you’ve read and receive additional perspective. I know it’s a super long comment, but I did get into habit of reading the Scripture this year by praying more, meditating more, and replacing mindless entertainment with more Christian content. I’m not a Catholic, and I read variety of different commentaries/perspectives. Even if you read/listen only to Mike Schmitz, it will be an amazing experience. But, of course, your personal relationship with God is what is the most important here. Don’t forget to pray throughout the day. God bless!
Dear Jesus Christ Almighty God, please give us deliverance from demonic activity of talking too much because you said be quick to hear and slow to speak. Just to find a quiet peaceful place to meditate and to groan and mourn and let the holy Spirit do the searching out instead our fleshy mouths all the time. Thanks Lord Jesus for helping me to obey the scriptures. Love you Jesus Christ and❤ to be only used by Jesus Christ Almighty. Ch
For the past few weeks, I have been convinced in my mind that I need to get serious about reading the Bible. I always start and stop. I know that I need to consume the word on my own and not blindly listen to people who cut and slice the passages to suit their message at that given point in time. I have also been praying for discernment for what I need to be doing to serve God ie my calling, and reading the Bible has been at the forefront of my mind. Now I listen to this homily and well I can't deny it if I try 😅 I need to read my Bible.
There's a large percentage of Catholics that want to be able to defend the faith through Apologetics. I wish you could teach us Apologetics in a podcast series, Father Schmitz.
THIS IS MY SON THE BELOVED❤ IN WHOM I AM WELL PLEASED. MIKE!! HOW MANY TIMES WAS THIS SAID??? TWICE!! IN THE WATER AND ON THE MOUNTAIN, TWO TIMES. THEY DON'T LIKE IT BECOUSE OF THE JOKE OF OTHERS ALL THIER LIVES. THEY CAN'T ACCEPT OTHERS GOOD OR BAD AND CAN'T GIVE UP THEMSELVES. THE NEW JOKE IS LIKE A FEATHER FOR YOU ALL 😓
Father Mike Thank you, for always inspiring me! I found you From our mutual friend Cindy Rowlee... Thank you for ALL your content and thought provoking or inspiration to act, words of wisdom... I very much enjoy what you and Jeff come up with, it's like you both speak directly to me... Thank you
What are the chances?! My brother just asked me this (we talk via Discord when not able to speak - life can keep you busy ay?!): "How the HELL do you get into reading the Bible?! Seriously. Can you send me an exact beginning of what to read etc??? Just can't do it!!" Clicked the Share button and recommended starting with Matthew. This is working for me. That combined with your recommendation to stop looking for 'Me, Answers etc.' is the perfect combo! Reading it so far, has been like a chore for me but I actually cannot wait to go to bed and read it now. 😁 (I've been forcing myself to read it as I'm determined to go to the source of my growing faith - it's still early days but Christianity feels so much more ... right/truth/correct ... words don't capture the sense. I've spent the last 4 to 5 years reading/ watching buddhist teachings, the Upanishads, the Quran and now the Bible and it feels like they all helped point me in the right direction; through exposure to their incorrect perspectives ... some great teachings but ultimately not ... God! 🤷🏻♂️). Anyway, thank you for this unbelievably timely video.
I watched the film about Paisios the Athonite (Paisios the ecumenical saint or something like that - exists in greek with eng subs:) He was so incredible. My new favorite saint for sure.
Father Mike, please. Would you consider making video games? I think it would reach more children and even adults. It can be presented like the Bible comic books. And narrated to teach like Bible in a year. I think the idea would be incredible. It would have to be very carefully planned, but it could be an amazing experience for people to learn the Bible. Thank you for hearing me out. ❤️Michelle
Fr. Mike, a priest once suggested that I read the new testament before the old up to Rev. & then proceed w/the old, after that finish w/Rev. What say you?
1 Corinthians 6:9 KJV "Know you not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of GOD? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of GOD. (Works of the flesh) 11 And such were some of you: but you are washed, but you are SANCTIFIED, but you are JUSTIFIED in the Name of the LORD JESUS, and by the SPIRIT of our GOD." Note: Revelation 1:5 KJV "and from JESUS CHRIST, Who is the FAITHFUL WITNESS and the FIRST BEGOTTEN of the dead, and the PRINCE of the kings of the earth. Unto HIM that loved us and WASHED us (Sanctification) from our sins in his OWN BLOOD (Justification) 6 and has made us Kings and Priests unto GOD and HIS FATHER; to HIM be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. (Parenthesis mine)
Padre Mike Schmitz, you changed my life 4 years ago when I started listening to The Bible in A Year. Now 4 years later, I'm still reading and spreading the Word daily. Thank you!

I want to start it over again. Something in my life has been missing lately and I think this is it. We still have lots of obligations but I want to make this a priority in my day. God bless you Father Mike!
fr mike you are so good
The Divine Mercy Catholic Bible from Ascension Press is my favorite. Thanks for an inspiring homily.
You are a trip Mik😂😂 👌
You are GANGSTER 😂😎 🤘
Fr. Mike,
I’ve read the Bible front to back so many times but have never fully knew it until I started The Bible in the Year Reading plan. Thank you for the explanations so now I can fully understand
Father Mike you are amazing I am a new convert and you make what is in my mind about Jesus easier, maybe I can do this 🙏
Great teaching. I so try to communicate the richness of Scripture. Will be adding this video to a ministry notification.
Amen!!
Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. (Proverbs 30:5)
Great homily. So many strong messages and beautiful witnesses to take away. I especially liked your caution not to read the Bible to find yourself but rather to find God.
Wow! It is good to see the Catholic Church getting into the Word of God through reading the Bible. Thank you Fr. Mike!
Thanks!
God bless you Fr. Mike.
I love this! I want to know Him and be in love with Jesus ❤
Wow! What a story! ❤
God bless!
❤
Dear Jesus Christ Almighty God, please give us deliverance from demonic activity of talking too much because you said be quick to hear and slow to speak. Just to find a quiet peaceful place to meditate and to groan and mourn and let the holy Spirit do the searching out instead our fleshy mouths all the time. Thanks Lord Jesus for helping me to obey the scriptures. Love you Jesus Christ and❤ to be only used by Jesus Christ Almighty. Ch
Amen. God bless
The more I read the Bible, the better apologist I become!!
It is True. we lost the story. so we are a confused society. perfect diagnoses.
we have to have Biblical world view.
thank you Fr. qe lost our story..
Thank you Father Mike
It’s a Love story

My brother just asked me this (we talk via Discord when not able to speak - life can keep you busy ay?!):
"How the HELL do you get into reading the Bible?! Seriously. Can you send me an exact beginning of what to read etc??? Just can't do it!!"
Clicked the Share button and recommended starting with Matthew.
The Michael you referenced makes me think of Samuel being called by God in the middle of the night.
I watched the film about Paisios the Athonite (Paisios the ecumenical saint or something like that - exists in greek with eng subs:) He was so incredible. My new favorite saint for sure.
MGBY Father ❤
AMEN!!!
I just bought the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible
❤❤
Amen. If you haven't read through the Bible in a Year, do it. I've done it twice and learned something each time.
You won't regret it.
❤🙏
🙏🏼
Father Mike, please. Would you consider making video games? I think it would reach more children and even adults. It can be presented like the Bible comic books.
And narrated to teach like Bible in a year. I think the idea would be incredible. It would have to be very carefully planned, but it could be an amazing experience for people to learn the Bible. Thank you for hearing me out.
❤️Michelle
🙏🕊🌹
I get really big John Cena vibes from this guy
Fr. Mike, a priest once suggested that I read the new testament before the old up to Rev. & then proceed w/the old, after that finish w/Rev. What say you?
Fr Mike can you recommend a comic book bible please.
(Works of the flesh)
11 And such were some of you: but you are washed, but you are SANCTIFIED, but you are JUSTIFIED in the Name of the LORD JESUS, and by the SPIRIT of our GOD."
Note: Revelation 1:5 KJV "and from JESUS CHRIST, Who is the FAITHFUL WITNESS and the FIRST BEGOTTEN of the dead, and the PRINCE of the kings of the earth. Unto HIM that loved us and WASHED us (Sanctification) from our sins in his OWN BLOOD (Justification) 6 and has made us Kings and Priests unto GOD and HIS FATHER; to HIM be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
