  • Are you looking for the best snorkeling spot in Orange Beach Alabama? When it comes to snorkeling in Orange Beach you just can't do better than the rock jetty off of Alabama Point. It has the most abundant sea life for the area and great snorkeling. On our way to the jetty, we passed a barge carrying materials for three new snorkeling reefs being installed in Orange Beach (more info below). It looks like the new Orange Beach snorkeling reefs will be giving the rock jetty some competition!
    ⚠️ CAUTION! ⚠️
    Strong Water Currents. Please follow all Alabama water safety and snorkeling rules and regulations

    Years ago before they decided to put the chain link barriers on the sides of that bridge it was a great place for high diving. The current can really whip through there. I'd pile out of the truck with a few others, truck would take off, check for boat traffic, dive, swim to shore, jump back in the truck and do it again....All day. Go eat a huge dinner, sleep like the dead, and do it again the next day.
    It was fun being a kid back then. I didn't have to wear a helmet to ride a bike, none of us needed constant adult supervision, cell phones didn't exist, history teachers were all WW2 vets, I'm just glad that I was born when I was. I feel sorry for most of the young people today. There are just too many restrictions put on them.

      Sounds like my youth, but mine was spent in North Texas with the exception of vacations in Padre Island. That sounds like a blast and I definitely would have loved to have been on that truck with you if I were around then. 😁👍

      @@thetoneman You would have fit right in! The police finally got my Brother for driving the truck. They waited for us to swim back and told us not to do it anymore. We agreed, and nobody got a ticket. Not even my Brother.
      The following weekends we would hitch-hike and ask to be let out at the top. All the locals knew what we were doing and would give us a ride. Looking back, the cops really didn't give a damn either. The worst accident I ever saw was my Sister losing the top to her bikini and having to throw her a towel so she could get out of the water.

    Be very careful swimming in those waters. I’ve grown up surfing there and I strongly advise checking tide charts and weather report before going. And there’s some really big sharks in there 😎

    • @thetoneman
      @thetoneman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely. I always check tides, weather and take precautions (life jackets etc.). I've seen a few sharks out there... even made the news with one of my shark videos. Thanks! 😁👍

      Thanks! Yea.. you have to pay in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores at a lot of places now 😔. Kinda Sucks, but hopefully the money will be used to make improvements to the area. Yes... this was during incoming (high) tide. 😁

    The Toneman was really helpful giving me advice on this location in the video. I loaded up the kayak and my son and I headed out. Unfortunately, we learned that this access area is now closed and there are barricades with no trespassing signs.
    We scooped out the area and came back the next day with our snorkel gear and no kayak. We were able to swim from the point on the beach.... we did take life jackets and assessed the tide weather before going out... there are plenty of signs to use caution on the beach... although none that say you shouldn’t swim.

      Went over there to fly my drone and I was told the area is now blocked off due to COVID-19. Maybe they will remove the barriers later.

      I also tried this location last week. No one was allowed near it. I was about to dive near the rocks at the point tho. Both ends of the pass were perfect.

    Great video and Such fun! I'll be in Orange Beach in September. Any suggestions for a place to take my 9 year old daughter snorkeling? She's never seen the ocean! Great swimmer, LOVES aquatic life. Easy access??? thanks.

    • @thetoneman
      @thetoneman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Orange Beach young children can safely snorkel around the bridge pilings near the parking lot/restrooms and at Alabama Point at the very south end of the beach. You must be very careful of the current in the pass and wear protective equipment like life vests/snorkeling vests. I would not suggest young children snorkeling out at the jetty unless you can get there safely via kayak, boat or other sturdy flotation device (life vests/snorkeling vests and dive flag a must). The best time to snorkel is 2 hours prior to high tide and good weather helps with water clarity. I hope you have a great time! 😉👍

    about a 1/2 hour before the tide comes in the area is great, gets abit clearer. Ive noticed very few sharks in the 20 years ive been diving snorkeling the pass, usually more at night with an out going tide.The other jetty isnt bad either. I wish thy'd fix the jetty, its silted in so much over the years since the rocks washed out.

      One day I saw four sharks while leaving the jetty and kayaking back towards the bridge... freaky! 😳

    What month of the year was this? Seems like winter the weather is more clear.

    • @thetoneman
      @thetoneman  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This was Aug 26th. The water can be very clear during winter but can also be clear in spring and summer, depending on the tides and weather. I have found that the water clarity in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Perdido Key can be very hit or miss. I see more consistent water clarity in Pensacola Beach, Navarre Beach, Destin, and Panama City Beach.

    honestly I think the best snorkel spot in orange beach is probably by the bridge or by flora bama

    • @thetoneman
      @thetoneman  ปีที่แล้ว

      The jetty rocks have much more diverse sea life IMO, but you can see some cool stuff under the bridge also and by the docks near Cobalt.

  • @brandonlee7895
    @brandonlee7895 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Are either of the jetties better than the other as far as being able to see the most marine life while snorkeling?

    • @thetoneman
      @thetoneman  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are likely to see similar sea life at either jetty. The East Rock island jetty is more difficult to access and more dangerous due to the current but less likely to deal with people fishing other than from boats. The west jetty has easy access from the beach but you are more likely to have more people fishing on the jetty.

    • @thetoneman

      Yes, this is my favorite place to snorkel in this area. You can also snorkel over by the bridge. There are strong currents and best time to snorkel is 2 hours prior to high tide.

    • @thetoneman
      @thetoneman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't worry about sharks while snorkeling the jetty. I have seen some while kayaking out to or from the jetty. I did capture a blacktip shark on video returning from snorkeling the jetty.
