Grant Dalton invited Ngāti Whatua Ōrakei to participate AND take their recently built waka over to escort Taihoro - ETNZ when it was launched, also to and from each race. To do this, cultural protocols need to be adhered to in order that everyone involved both on and off the water are kept safe and everything goes well.
There's nothing wrong with providing a little entertainment showcasing the Māori culture while they're there after all, it's good marketing for tourism.
