Swapping an ALH TDI Transmission into a Jetta 1.8T

  • Over the winter Izzy got a built Jetta, when he got it second gear was blown so we replaced the whole transmission with a Tdi trans. The benefit of a TDI transmission is that the TdI has longer gears so it ends up saving you gas because your driving at lower rpm, as well as you are able to push your car longer.

    Me and my father tackled my clutch/flywheel and timing belt on my 02 TDI over spring break. He lives 12 hours away, but has a lift and trans jack. Even with the right tools, that job still sucked. Those axle bolts suck ass. The biggest problem for us was the bracket for the shifter linkage, what a pain. Torching the twisted old dual mass flywheel to access the bolts was also fun. I broke my mileage record on that trip, 52.9 on a tank. I also left the casino $500 ahead and recouped all costs for parts, tools, and the trip.

    It would be nice if we had the CODE. Useless video if it doesn’t give us data. Transmissions have codes. I need the code of the tdi.

      ALH isnt the trans code though, its the engine code of the tdi it was taken from. The trans code should be EGR O2J although some mkiv TDI's had different trans codes.

    im pretty sure it would have been better to swap a 2.0 na transmission with a 4.2 ring and pinion with the 1 through 5 gears from your 1.8t transmission. this would make your car hit only 2 gears on a 60 to 130 pull and have 5th gear top out at 135 mph and you will be able to hit all 4 gears in the 1/4 and have your 4th gear hit 110 to 115 mph at 6200 rpms. go faster with less power with that combo.

    Yall should go into how the tdi trans drives on a 1.8t.

      For daily driving and fuel economy it was pretty decent. 1-2 are the same as 1.8t 3-5 are a lot longer so when you shift from 2 it’s a pretty big drop but you can cruise at 80mph and only be at around 2800 rpm in 5th. Only bad side was the car felt super slow due to the longer gears.

    • @emeelius

      Hello! So after this we realized that that was not the best trand to put on a big turbo car. Unless you're trying to strictly got for top speed. Because the rpms drop too much when you change gears so you almost drop below the spool point on the turbo and have to wait for it to get enough rpms to spool the turbo. I don't know what your application is , but just our 2 cents

    • @IT_Performance

      Only difference is when swapping between 5 speed and 6 speed you need axles and knuckles to go along with whatever trans your putting in. The 6 speed axles are a bit thicker

      It was at around 400 WHP. Not sure what the top speed was, we never got it up that fast. But we would recommend a 6 speed with a reinforced fork and an lsd.

    • @IT_Performance
      @IT_Performance  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      the tdi gears are longer, they are designed for lower rpms. so when u match it with a 1.8t you get a longer pull and lower rpms in 5th so u get better mpgs on highway plus longer pulls in lower gears

    Are holes from transmission at same spot as should be to connect the engine??are cv axles the same?

    • @IT_Performance
      @IT_Performance  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bolt holes are the same. And you have to swap out those axle cups like we did to be able to use your original axles. You can either do that, or you can take the axles apart and swap out the part that mates to the transmission. I recommend just swapping the axle cups on the transmission.

      @@libres12 np. It's because the 2.0 doesn't have much power to begin with, so it's got the shortest gears out of all the mk4s to try to make it feel a bit quicker. Which sucks cuz I think at 70mph in 5th your at like 3k rpm.
