      Yeah, hope she can be herself, but the music business has a consistent record of chewing people up and spitting them out. She will be toured because that's where the money is and I'm certain she has a 360 deal. So the record company will put her on the road, which is fun for awhile but then...not so much.

    • @TheMagiciansLeftHand
      @TheMagiciansLeftHand 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      She's actually the exact opposite. She studied music and music BUSINESS at NYU. No doubt she knows how to appear authentic.

    • @Grant_Ferstat
      @Grant_Ferstat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@TheMagiciansLeftHand I'm sorry but your comment strikes me as rather automatic cynicism. You really think they run classes in that program on how to appear authentic? Just because she may have some understanding of how the industry works and how to promote her music doesn't make her inauthentic. I think her reactions are genuine and her interviews candid.

    • @TheMagiciansLeftHand
      @TheMagiciansLeftHand 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Grant_Ferstat I think it's likely she received media training, which may have impressed the importance of appearing authentic. That's not to say she's a liar; I just feel like I hear a lot of the same talking points from musicians making bland albums.

    I just love this woman. Finally. Someone close to my age who makes stellar music that is derivative from the norm but who is also so intellectual. She motivates me to be more thoughtful and introspective and to talk more slowly, thinking before speaking. I just respect her so much as an artist and a person. Her new album is amazing. It makes me feel something from the nectar of my soul and that happens very rarely with an album but when it does, I devote all my thought to it. I just can’t get enough.

    • @Jaqvander
      @Jaqvander 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      She's just her authentic self, that's why she thinks before she speaks; she's checking her core stance so she can verbalise it into an answer. I love it that there's a role model for this age, showing that you don't need to be a loud, exciting, full of big stories entertainer, that your natural, calm self is lovelier than all of that fake wannabe nonsense.

    Firstly, love the entire interview--it's incredibly thoughtful and well navigated. Secondly, the perspective Maggie explains at 16:30 is really very true. I'd also say that being an artist in most spheres is part public service and personal therapy. Sometimes it's simultaneous and other times, oscillating, but that's definitely my experience as well.

    I Love Maggie and her Music. I have been writing since a very young girl, my music has been different, and I have always heard what I wanted for my song and let others take over the arrangements. Listening firstly to the masterclass with Pharell I was blown away. This woman is grounded, and speaks from her heart and soul no analyzing required, and writes and performs her way. That's how all of us should be as artists, free to be who you truly are, not who the industry thinks you should be. She is making the kind of music she wants to make, Maggie's Music. I am a huge fan on an Island surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the East Coast of Canada; Gander, Newfoundland . Loved Maggie's Ellen performance, it was a goosebump, excitement of the happy hormone as she went through the audience dancing and singing. Keep being yourself Maggie Rogers. Beautiful

    I can so relate to Maggie and her music, wow, she is so natural, talented, humble, and open about all her music! As a writer myself, I totally get how she feels about her music, and particularly how she is inspired as a musician, I feel the same way too, in as much as I get inspired by things I see or feel in my life mentally or emotionally, and it is so refreshing to me to know another musician feels the same way too. Keep up the great work Maggie, your music and approach, and attitude is awesome and spot on! I think and feel sure that this is the way it should be, and Maggie has said it in this interview that it is a natural process, which for me is the very wonderful and organic process of music for me that I love the most! Thank you so much Maggie for sharing that!

    Surreal to see someone, a fellow being, be this self-conscious (in the utmost positive way) and hold no restraint in being vocal about it and not just that but also be beautifully articulate about it. As a 25-year-old myself crossing to 26, trying to figure out the puzzle and putting things together, it makes her just so even more relatable.
    Makes me want to simply ask her out :)

    She is describing exactly how I feel about novels, which is including (or at least) thinking about the reader as you write. I never realized that pop music as a constraint on the singer was a thing, the same way as the idea that writing IS rhetorical, which it is. An while you certainly have to find yourself in your work YOU are as much shaped by your constraints as you are freed by them.

    Some of the comments I’m reading on here using words like genuine, honest , real and authentic etc are a bit strange to me and they just over simplify people.
    Maggie seem to be naturally a person who have an open type personality/ bubbly etc which is great , but some people (including some artists) simply are just more naturally reserved , graded and less comfortable with sharing with strangers outside of their art , and I don’t think that mean they’re manufactured , contrived or not authentic or whatever people call it .
    It’s simply people having different personalities and everyone should just be whoever they are . Not one of them make you more authentic or “real “then the other , authenticity is being you and doing the you you feel at that moment.

      Yes, but this is in regard to a lot of famous people who come to interviews with scripted answers to (mostly) scripted questions.
      It was more in that regard. When you are more of an introvert, I think it still show your authenticity. I don't think the comments were cheering for how bubbly her personality is, just how real. People like it real.
      Most famous people are completely fake in interview, and exaggerate or fake their overly social personality.
