  • Orange man bad! Football team good! These were the bold convictions we fearlessly carried into Super Bowl LI, the first-ever Super Bowl imbued with real political heat. Millions of us jumped on the Falcons’ bandwagon, and we all had a very good time. God bless our big old goofy trickster bird.
    This is part seven of a seven-part series.
    Written and hosted by Jon Bois and Alex Rubenstein
    Directed by Jon Bois
    Produced by Alex Rubenstein
    Additional contributions by Joe Ali and Steven Godfrey
    Rights specialist Lindley Sico
    Secret Base executive producer Will Buikema
    Secret Base managing editor Ryan Nanni
    Corrections:
    55:27 -- That's Chris Hogan, not Kevin.
    1:20:40 -- That 20-0 score was at the end of the first quarter, not halftime.

      Its crazy how one playcall led to the fall of the Hawks as an elite team. That being said the Hawks defense deserves blame for that loss. They gave up two crucial TD drives in the 4th. For me there is simply no excuse for that. An end of game goalline turnover is heartbreaking but they got bailed out by Kearse to even had a real chance to win at that point. The Falcons made a lot more mistakes and missed more oppurtinies to lose SB 51 but the entire Hawks team deserves shame for their 4th quarter performance. When they needed to do their best they folded and thats how they should be remembered.

    • @Rekcha
      @Rekcha 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thedude3065 They wanted to stop the clock without using their last timeout, thereby securing at least three more plays. And they used a high percentage throw, but Brandon Browner and Malcolm Butler made a great play. I’m not saying it was the smartest call, but I think there was a rationale.

    From the start of the series I wanted to share this story about how I'll never forget Superbowl 51 between the Falcons and Patriots.
    It's my freshman year of college. I decided to go pretty far away from home because I'm from a pretty small place. Go out and see the world in a way right? So my the freshman housing TA's are hosting a Superbowl watch party for everyone in my building. I of course went instead of watching the game by myself because hey, freshman year get to know more people and watch some football. I went to school in northern NY so a lot of New Englanders also went there, ergo a lot of Patriots fans. Just as described here at a certain point all the Pats fans that showed up to watch the game left. Us fools who stayed thinking we would watch something that rarely happened in our life times. The Patriots, and more specifically Tom Brady, losing a Superbowl. The Falcons are not my favorite team, but I had definitely always liked them. Turner and White were some of my favorite players to watch growing up. It was already no question who I was rooting for in this Superbowl. But then of course the collapse happened. I think most of us knew right after the Pats got to 20 that that was game over. We just sat and watched it happen. Dumbfounded at the event. And of course, the most infuriating part of the whole night came when the Pats fans who had left the watch party hours before. Had now come back. To watch the rest of us suffer as the Falcons snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. I'll never forget that Superbowl or that night. For a team that wasn't even my favorite it was one of the most crushing feelings in the world.

    Gotta disagree with the "no infamous gaffe" thing. That call on 2nd and 11 at the 23-yard line is one of the worst playcalls I have ever seen in that big of a situation. At the 23-yard line at the time of the playcall, a field goal would have been 40 yards out. Matt Bryant was a perfect 9 for 9 from 40-49 yards out, and was 22 for 23 from 39 yards or fewer.
    And the Falcons decided to _pass._ _PASS._ Rather than play it safe and trust the guy who had only missed 1 field goal attempt from less than 50 yards throughout the entire season, the Falcons passed. Against a team with all the momentum on the planet at that time, and whose defense had been looking like the best in football (save for that Julio catch) ever since the Falcons went up 28-3. The decision to pass was so overwhelmingly risky in FG range compared to just running it 3 times - and shocker, it failed miserably.
    Was it possible that Bryant could have missed that FG? Of course. But considering that pass play ended up leading to the disasterous end sequence that denied Bryant from even getting a chance to make that possible Super Bowl-winning FG.... yeah.
    You are free to disagree of course, but from my perspective, that is such a god awful playcall - especially with how automatic Matt Bryant had been all year - to make, and it resulted in the catastrophe that allowed the Pats the 2nd wind. This wasn't Cleveland, man, this was the Super Bowl.

      I feel like the Leafs don't quite fit the Mariners/Falcons mould, as they have quite a bit of success if you go back far enough.
      Actually... hmm... Falcons' first season, 1966. Leafs' last Cup, 1967.

    Quite hilarious that the Pats are heavily associated with Trump in this part, yet the majority of New England voted for Hillary.
    Another banger again, as usual though

      Did you miss the part where Belichick, Brady, and Kraft openly expressed support for Trump right before the game? Less to do with New England itself and more to do with how disconnected the wealthy are in this country from the rest of us.

      @@paulmartin591 Disconnected? Trump was legitimately elected. There's not enough wealthy people to only vote him in.

      Yeah I think it’s funny because if I had to tell the story I’d do it the opposite
      Patriots like Clinton to many represented an always winning always dominate establishment while Trump like the Falcons to many was an outsider who could take on the establishment
      Combine that with the fact that the falcons are from the conservative south while the patriots are from the liberal New England the only similarities I see between the Falcons and Clinton is they both lost.

      @paulmartin591 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@henryh2712 The idea that Trump was some outsider taking on the establishment is a joke. Probably why he rubbed elbows with the Clintons for years. He’s firmly entrenched. Also I would look at how Atlanta votes specifically before calling it conservative.
