Papermaking can be traced back to the early Western Han Dynasty in 2nd century BC, when our ancestors began to produce the most primitive form of paper from hemp netting and bark.
In this highly-industrialized age of mass production, I hope we still have idea how our Chinese ancestors, without any modern machines, invented paper!

Or we could just plant more trees. No need to take Care of trees
Ah...ok I didn't understand why she tossed it into the fire. I was like nooooo all that hard work wasted.....but thank you for the explanation of why she did that.
It was so sad to see this big, beautiful piece of paper thrown on the fire after so much work. I know how much work it takes. I have made paper in this way from fig bark, mulberry bark, fir bark, Daphne bark and other plant fibers. Each has a distinctive feel and scent.
That paper could have been wet, shredded and put back in the mortar to be mashed more thoroughly.
Removing all the green outer bark and any imperfections will make a better quality sheet, although sometimes imperfections can make interesting patterns and textures.
Rather than dumping wood ash right on the bark strips, it is better to stir the ash into a large pot of water, let the soot settle and pour off the clear liquid into the cooking pot. Protect your eyes and wash up, the lye is caustic.
Use a little more water in the mortar. It is important to break the lumps down to individual fibers. Don't chop the pulp with a knife. The fibers should be kept as long as possible for strength and continuity.
I prefer to let my screens dry in the sun.
Do it again and use some of that wonderful bamboo you have to make a kite!
she didn't actually burn the paper. She took it out, its the paper that she used at the end of the video. Thats why its burnt at the edges and wrinkled.
put on the subtitles and watch again - some of it is explained, although not all the points you brought up. for example, she states to let the screens air dry in summer, but because it's winter, she dried it in front of the fire.
thank you you are awesome !
Her technique is western. China, Japan and Korea use a technique invented by Cai Lun in 100 CE, and is still used today to produce high quality paper. I think since she is using paper mulberry, she should process it more completely and adopt at least the traditional techniques and materials so as not to waste the potential of the raw resource .
@@tinateh Her technique is much closer to the traditional Chinese than the western. Paper is made from many different kinds of plant fibers. There are many variations in each step of the process.
Traditional Asian processes are done by hand. Plant fibers are gathered, stripped, cleaned, might be soaked, might be boiled, might be treated with lye, would be beaten in mortar and pestle, with hardwood mallets or beaters. The screen could be made from thin strips of bamboo lashed together with silk thread, silk cloth or woven grass. Each type of screen leaves a distinct impression in the finished sheet. The screen could be placed in water, the pulp dispersed by hand, lifted and dried in the sun. The screen could be covered with a deckle, a frame that forms a shallow wall to contain a certain amount of the pulp, all dipped into a vat of pulp and lifted to form the sheet. When the deckle is lifted from the screen it leaves the feathered edge we call a deckle edge. The sheets could be dried on the screen, formed into a pile and pressed or placed on boards in the sun or before a fire. Sheets would be counted into bundles for delivery to the market. These techniques are still used to make papers in Thailand, Tibet and other Asian countries, as well as Japan, China and Korea. There is an international market for fine handmade papers used by bookbinders, artists and conservators.
The modern western processes use machines. The early western papers were made primarily from cotton and linen. The material would be pulped in a Hollander beater (1680), which had revolving knives like a kitchen blender. The sheet would be hand formed on a brass screen with a deckle, dipped in a vat of dispersed pulp. Later the paper was formed on a Fourdrinier (1806), a large belt of brass screen running over rollers. The pulp would be deposited on the moving screen from a header box. Most of the water would drain through the screen, more would be pressed out between rollers. Final drying would be between heated rollers. The sheet would be formed onto a roll to be sent for cutting into sheets of the required size. The sheets have a sharp edge. Mechanical pulping used wood for the fibers (1840) and the sulfite process (1857) uses harsh chemicals to dissolve evergreen wood chips. The residual chemicals can cause the paper to turn yellow, then brown and it will become brittle and fall apart.

carlosmante Both amate and papyrus isn't defined as true paper though. Amate is much more fibrous . It isn't really flat as it has hills and valleys. Still, amate is closer to true paper than papyrus. Hawaiian Kapa is more like cloth than paper.
@@carlosmante I believe ancient Mexican and ancient North Chinese and Tibetan are from a same origin
I love weaving and dyeing the mulberry paper yarn that I bought. Watching her going through the process of making mulberry paper is so value able! wether the end result is successful or not. Going through the process is a success!

I am watching this video thinking, you are so much more talented and capable than I - you are self-sufficient in food, clothing, make-up, and now paper. I bow at your skills.
I gasped when it looked like you gave up and burned the paper - only to see you writing on what looked like singed paper at the end, good dramatics. Please, if you would, English subtitles.
Best wishes.
It never cross your mind that this is a comedy show?
Thomas B o
Subtitles would be nice but you gotta appreciate it for what it is, not what it’s missing
"Did you really think this was gonna stop me? ;)" i love her so much xD
Let this be a lesson. ALWAYS maintain and sharpen your knives.
Guys have you noticed ziqi’s videos haven’t advertisement
She is a real-world princess who had her moment of frustration when her papercutting didn't go as desired. I wish I could give this video more than one thumbs up.
She snaps cabbage heads with ease. She is fast with a butcher knife. She easily gets frustrated and burns her work even after hours of her effort. Beautiful roses have sharp thorns. ;) She is a strong lady and not as fragile as she appears.
ending sadder than Titanic and The English Patient combined
I was shook when she took the knife to it. Then balled it up. I almost passed out!
You didn't say the Boy in the Striped Pajamas so no tears from me.
LOL She took the paper out of the fire finally

She can do everything. Im believing now she is a goddess ❤
The handwork involved in this, is amazing. Another fascinating look at ancient Chinese craft work. I never doubted you would finish well even after the fire.
Thank you Ziqi, your video let people know how did Chinese people live in the ancient time when there was no industry.
Why do I feel this video video was a message like she made the paper with so much hardwork and when such paper tranported to city side for students to use we waste so much paper maybe she did that to make us realise what it feels like to waste paper after putting in so much hardwork , I guess I understand her message
Or.... she messed up, but good point
Shes a perfectionist, its one of her flaws
you didnt understand a message you gave one.
I also think so....
Or she lost her patience and just ripped it by accident and then got frustrated, rolled it and threw it in the fire .Man she is loosing her patience just like this:🤗😶😐😑😒😞😟😠😖😫😤😣😡
This is the video when I first time saw Liz... Since then I fall in love with her hard work, her passion... ❤️

The method of making "paper" "drawing ink block" "drawing brush" which explained in these movie is
completely same way in Japan. It came from China one thousand plus few hundred years ago
with Chinese character.
Most people in the comment section don't realize that the manufacturing of this paper and silk were highly guarded secrets also many types of complex old chinese siege weaponry.
The only times when these secrets leak, is when someone knows them is captured by an enemy force.
Rain Hon
Lol!!!!! I did NOT expect that ending 😂😂😂😂
Li Ziqi : *drying the bark from water content
Also Li Ziqi : *soaking the same bark in water for 10 days
Water : Am i joke to you?
that's the process...if she didn't do so, it won't be success to making papers
This gets all the acids and tannins out.

the ash contains sodium hydroxide (lye) which when boiled breaks down the woody fibers.
Chris OConnor thank you. I was so perplexed
So the wood strips are boiled in ashy water?
i died when she threw the paper in the fire XD
She finally puled it back from fire and wrote sonething on it.

👋🏽 hi, I love your videos, but is it possible to have English subtitles for the Chinese writing? That would be lovely!! Also the names of the items you use and the names of the plants/ flowers / trees. It would help us learn more about your culture which is beautiful. :)
Because most people understand English and not German
It's time to learn Chinese.
the tree name is Broussonetia papyrifera
