How to fit NEW brakes for HALF price! Project R8 Ep7

  • In this video I'm not posing with a press car, I show you the parts, tools and work needed to replace the rear brake discs on your series 1 Audi R8 and save lots of money. AND get a buzz from doing so!
    The easiest and costliest option is to go to your Audi main dealer and pay their fixed price of £1200 for rear discs and pads while you drink the most expensive 'free' coffee you will ever have. However, if you shop around and do some simple DIY you can do the same job, probably more carefully, for under half the price.
    We got our genuine Audi discs from audipartsdirect... for £510 the pair inc. VAT and delivery (we used the 'Make an Offer' facility on Ebay to get them down from £525). You can do this too, it's not a trade discount. The website is run by Audi main dealer group Mon Motors who have sites in the South west of England.
    We got the pads from Sabre Auto Spares Ltd, a small motor factor in south Birmingham a few mins from J3 M42, they are doing a great job of converting me from grudgingy using Euro Car Parts, they have an ebay shop so give them a try wherever you are;
    www.ebay.co.uk...
    TRW are a massive global automotive parts company and are an OEM supplier so quality is top notch;
    £25 for the handbrake pads (the box said Aston Martin DB9 and Jaguar S type but they were perfect)
    £54 for the main pads (the box said Audi R8 / R8 Spyder)
    For the record, TPS who are a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group UK are supposed to supply the trade with genuine parts at trade prices yet they want £540 (PLUS VAT!!) for the brake discs. Since dieselgate VW Group have increased parts price and reduced trade discount so I now do everything I can to avoid buying parts from them. Ironically the discs I purchased came from a main dealer with no special trade discount who is also paying Ebay & Paypal commission and the cost of a courier for some very heavy items - it just doesn't make sense how they can be so cheap (or TPS so dear) but I am not going to argue! Clearly the dealer is getting a MASSIVE discount from VWG UK (only fair as they are a franchisee) and kindly passing some of this on.
    I calculated after making the video that I got the genuine Audi discs, OEM quality pads (2 sets), the piston windback kit and the punches for LESS than buying JUST THE DISCS from TPS (which is meant to be a discounted trade outlet!)
    We got some tools from Amazon delivered next day:
    Dremel 3000 £42 (optional)
    Set of punches £10
    Piston windback kit £15 (£20 as stated is the going rate though)
    We also adjusted the handbrake which I'd expect Audi to charge extra for, and cleaned up the front brake discs as well. In fact I suspect the £1200 Audi quote doesn't include new handbrake pads as the front discs and pads are £1250 from Audi, are very similar and only use one pad set.
    There is no reason why with the right tools this can't be done on a DIY basis so give it a go and comment here if you need any advice!
    This video is a longer than I'd have liked but rest assured it has been edited down by around 50% to make the DIY process as concise as possible while showing sufficient detail.
    Apologies for the heavy rain noise which made it into a few sections of the video - this is unavoidable, we did however try 2 new techniques for voice quality which seemed to work OK.

      Thanks Malcolm! The 'ring is a great road trip especially if you catch some racing there but it's probably not the best place to drive a car for the first time on track so might have to track down Misha and go drive his Sub-7 Up! as that would be much more fun 👌

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, go to www.eurocarparts.com, enter your reg and go to front brake discs - they might list two sizes and each should have a PR code. Make a note and check the data sticker in your car's boot or the inside front cover of service book and see if you find a match. Those will be the size. You can also get the PR code from www.realoem.com but it's a bit trickier to search

    as your a "wizard" with the VW marque, I need a bit of advice me old mate, I`ve got a boggo standard skoda 105 PD manual gearbox car, it`s only worth about 1k on a good day with the sun in your eyes, it`s running luvvly and it`s pretty good on the old diesel, but I`d like a bit more power and ESPECIALLY TORQUE and slightly more oomph, was thinking of having a rolling road remap, it`s going to cost about £300ish , are these 105 pd`s tuneable or do they go bang after a power increase, it`s done 160000 miles, but I service it twice a year, so it`s well maintained, do you think it`s worth doing or should I just leave it be as I approach my 60th birthday and keep plodding along in lane 1 on the motorways into retirement...………...

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi t5jerry, I'd have to say that you are best leaving that well alone! The 105s weren't that brilliant when new and the 5 speed box is quite weak. Adding more power and torque will just accelerate wear and tear of which there will already be plenty evident. I'd save up and buy a cheap Fabia VRS, great car out the box (though many will be tuned...!)

    Great video. I recently did all the brakes on my B7 RS4 so nice to know I have been doing it the right way. I also agree about the way parts prices have been going.
    The Nurburgring sounds like a good idea, especially since I have spent more time working on the car rather than driving it this year! At least I am not the only one 😅

    Wheels look better than last time I actually like them now. I was on the fence in the last video. I still like red calipers but not sure if they would suit it. I use Poorboys on my black trim it smells lovely.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      IThanks Paul. don't think the last video gave the wheels the right opportunity to impress but at the time I didn't appreciate how much of an effect the caps would have. I will check out that Poorboys stuff, I've got some Meguiars tyre dressing that's really good and goes on plastics just fine too and it smells nice but not sure I can face the comments from the detailing geeks about using a tyre dressing on plastics :)

    Couple of points to note: when working so close to the brakes you should wear a breathing mask to prevent breathing in any brake dust or aluminium oxide, especially if you are going to use a brush, wire or otherwise. Also it is best to clean the discs with a brake cleaner to get rid of any grease or oil which will easily contaminate the new brake pads.

    Lucky that’s a cable handbrake not an electronic one! As that Needs to be plugged into vagcom to release it before you can change it! Unless there’s another way?

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You do need a diagnostic tool of some sort to wind the callipers back _ ironically I had that available so would have been better for me if they were electronic - I wonder if Mk2 R8 has a separate electronic calliper for handbrake..?

    • @pheasantpluckersson2138
      @pheasantpluckersson2138 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      volkswizard i think the V10 has the electronic handbrake, along with optional hill assist
      My RS3 will be needing new rear discs and pads shortly, and your right on the pricing! I can get brembo drilled rear discs and OE textar pads for £175 on line which is way cheaper than even TPS
      Your Wheels look much better now also, could the refurb company not paint the original caps to match? It’s a service Lepsons offer whatever material they are made of

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Maverick 41, they couldn't paint the caps but I'm too fussed as when Audi do bronze wheels on R8 and A1 they have black caps. Is yours an 8P RS3? Surprised you can get Brembo aftermarket already, that's good to know. Last time I bought B7 RS4 fronts, they were aftermarket Brembo and as you say, loads cheaper than even the Stoke Audi discounted prices and bearing in mind Brembo makes the originals you'd be mad to pay more.
      I've got hill assist on mine, bit annoying to be honest, seems to randomly hold brakes on for a couple of secs.

    • @pheasantpluckersson2138
      @pheasantpluckersson2138 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      volkswizard hi, mine is a 2016 8V RS3 sportback, had it since February, fantastic car 👍🏻 yeah defo original brembo discs and tartar pads, i have seen a few options about to be fair, fortunately mine had the front discs/pads changed to the later rounds type by Audi under warranty last December as the wavy ones were squeaky I’d suspect, so they won’t need doing for a while 😂 i hope 🤞
      I kind of wish mine had the hill assist on it, it’s one of the only options it never had despite it being owned by Audi Uk first, think it was only an £80 option, can’t complain though they put everything else on it 😂👍🏻

    • @and79
      @and79 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you purchase Carley for VAG along with its app you can put the electronic brake into service mode via your phone.
