I feel like that would be a waste of his talents. You don't need to be such a good story teller to host a show, but you do need to be a good listener. He would be bored out of his mind interviewing celebs all day.

Mulaney needs more hosting gigs, his SNL shows are just terrific and, dare I say, among the best these past many years
If it weren't for the addictions, I would think Lorne Micheals would hand John Mulaney the reins to this show when he retires in three years. He would be perfect to run that.
SNL shows are always hit or miss, but when Mulaney is on they all seem to take off into the stratosphere. I think he fixes all of them.

I don’t know if it’s a generational thing, but I can connect to his vibe despite never using drugs. John Mulaney, you’re an American treasure and I send you so much strength.. you can do it.. stay sober and safe… we need your energy, we need you!
i think it was just the previous generations' extremely binary and shame-centered view on people with any kind of flaw. people just ended up hiding their problems until perhaps their problems ended them
As opposed to sending him strength?? Could you actually Pray for Love to intervene and Help John. His child can't, his wife can't, his friends can't..drug addiction is the most powerful way to destroy ourselves and everything and everyone we Love. But God really does intervene. I know. Personally. By God's Grace sober for decades from several addictions I have Zero power over. Ever. Sorry I'm writing this a lot tonight cuz I know God can Help and for reasons I don't understand pray works

IDK. I am 47 and my 15 year old daughter also gets the importance of addressing the sad and bad side of life through laughter like only SNL allows. Many have stood on the stage and comforted us, and I am sure themselves, through shit times and circumstances.
John has always owned up to his addictions while still being comedic about it. It's good to see that even after his terrible year that he can bounce back and laugh at it a little bit.
This will go down as one of the greatest monologues in SNL history. Baby J is back!!!

I saw John at the first big show he did post-rehab in Boston. First night, you could tell he was nervous at first, but he absolutely killed it. The material here is pretty much a refined section of that, and somehow it's even better the second time.
Yeah I just went to one of his Ohio shows this week and most of this was part of it. Definitely just as funny the second time.
I love John Mulaney's voice! He sounds like an old timey announcer. No one can ever sound like him.

To be able to make unhappy events so freaking funny is something John does amazingly. He's such a pro and I hope to see decades more stand up from this amazing guy.

I'm not a drug addict, but as someone who has been in treatment for an eating disorder, thank you for normalizing going away to rehab/treatment and making it something to not be ashamed of.

It's an amazing, difficult thing to show up for yourself! I'm not in rehab but in recovery for my mental health and it is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of! But I understand why it feels like it is
I always like his delivery; super crisp and to the point.
Thank you John for normalizing addiction and going to rehab. You will likely inspire others. Bravo for adding humor to a dramatic life experience.

It is so true. Wow, being dependent on opiates for back pain for five years. I became dependent. I thank God I never went further, I got off pain medicine after spinal fusion surgery. It has been 4 years. This is so funny, and nice to hear someone be real and making light of human problems we face in life via comedy. We do recover.

Absolutely!!! His Halloween show was sooooo bad I was actually relieved to know it was because he was in a terrible place w his using. Sobriety suits him much better!
Great point. Please Pray for John. I fear for him and his wife and child.. nothing is more important than a fix to us who use. John is sober again..but he fears confrontation..life sadly carries untold numbers of those.. I hope he can reach honest real sobriety but I know for me it took God and many other's prayers...

This hits a real hard place and makes the sad bits of me smile. When we had an intervention for my dad in late 2018, he definitely wasn't expecting it. It's been a hard road for him, but he's been clean for about a year now. And this humor from an addict helps me understand my dad and love him through it. Thank you to John Mulaney for being so open.

This is genuinely the funniest opening I’ve ever seen and I’m so glad to see him doing so much better. He’s made us laugh for years and we nerve know what happening behind the scenes, I can’t imagine how nerve racking it is to come back to the stage and anticipate the public’s reaction but he killed it
John’s 2-month rehab story is proof that comedy is tragedy plus time.
I’m a pilot, and my plane crashed so quickly I couldn’t think of any good punchlines. Maybe if I stalled in the air a little longer my jokes could’ve landed, unlike my plane.
As someone who was definitely on that plane, I agree that joke is so much funnier now than when you said it over the intercom.

My partner is an addict former at it we still don't act but he's in recovery he taught me that comedy heals and so I'm obsessed with comedy it has helped my life

This really was one of the best monologues I’ve seen. I have some of the same characteristics, where I’m polite when I shouldn’t be. I also have struggled with addiction and am doing well. It’s nice to hear someone say it and just open up to it. I hope he stays sober.

I’ve never been blown away by his stand-up, but this was pretty fantastic.
If his vibe doesn't catch you the first time, it totally can the second. And then suddenly you root for him. And then the rest is quite palatable. :-)
@@ryankramer I have to agree totally. He didn't grab me the first time--a few chuckles, but I'm a pretty easy laugh most of the time. I walked away thinking "great storyteller" and that's about it. Cut to now, when I think he's a precious natural resource. ;)

Thank you so much John, for being honest about your addiction. You have literally just proven true that old adage "anyone can become an addict". Most people think that Proper well educated men Never fall victim to addiction, and that is a dangerous mindset. You're also making it okay to be open and honest about your addiction. Which will give strength to more people than you'll ever know. Again, thank you my friend, and stay strong.

1) I'm glad he took control over his life and health it is a one day at a time process.
2) His monologue talking about his struggles is in my opinion on the level of Richard Pryor at his best and vulnerable. Absolutely masterful.

If you listen to some of his older material, he definitely talks about getting black out drunk and using drugs. He’s had this problem for quite a while, but he’s still fighting and that’s what counts!

Even after getting sober over 2 years ago, there are still dealers that I talk to, dealers who are actually friends.

Why? By God's Grace I am sober. I lost many people when I was brought to a meeting. They cannot come on to our new life if they live the old life fully.
You are a diabetic who still goes to the candy store 2x a week. The store owner has to sell their Candy...you are going to eat... Please remember we are powerless. Please remember there is either sobriety or looking back while trying to walk forward up hill... You don't need to fall.... God bless you

He didn’t have a baby with his partner he cheated on his wife and then got Olivia Munn pregnant before the divorce was finalized

I never took this man seriously when he talked abt his drug problems previously. I thought he was just making up jokes. So glad to see him back in these streetz and rooting for him

John killed it! One of my favorite monologues ever. So proud & inspired by him. I'm recently recovering from addiction myself. I'll be honest, when John was using I started to become annoyed by him 🙄🤦🏼♀️. He completely turned it all around though, better than ever, imo. So relatable for so many. Appreciate him being so candid/ sharing his situation. Can really help others 💜

This is literally one of the best and funniest monologues ever
2:11 - This is a very witty example of how correlation does not imply causation. Also, that ending analogy about his son‘s recalled pacifier and his own drug habit was apropos and brilliant.
He did Anna dirty, but I'm happy he's back and looking healthy.
And props to Mulaney for handling this right up front; fans knew most of it from his Myers appearance earlier in the year, but he had to address it here too, and he did a great job.

Please Pray for John. This is his 2nd time through recovery. He may start to think getting sober again is his way to funny.. I know it isn't rational. But addiction has nothing to do with rational or personal power or attitude... It's about crossing a line before we knew there was a line and Never ever having power to stop. It's a God intervenes moment even if we don't believe in God ...

This is the first time I’ve seen or heard Mulaney since he went to rehab and I hope he’s continuing to do well.
He seems likes he’s heading in the right direction and I never expected him to actually address what he’s been through to any degree, but just seeing him with more meat on his bones, has made me a bit more hopeful.
