Love this video, and I definitely agree. I didn't start playing drums until about seven years ago in my late 30s. I am legally blind, so reading sheet music is pretty difficult. I've never had drum lessons or anything, but just taught myself what I know so far by listening. Even songs I learned a couple of years ago, I'm recently picking up subtleties recently. I don't feel I'm an expert drummer by any means, but I love playing, and I'm proud of what I've learned so far. I just wish I would've started earlier. I remember wanting to play drums in grade school when we could first start band, but they said because of my vision I wouldn't be able to keep up. I wish I would've fought them on that one.
I’ve found I need to listen to songs again away from the kit after about a week of learning the song. I always miss something the first time learning a song and never hear when I’m playing over it. This has helped me heaps
Hey Stephen, This is definitely true! I did the ear training Notation in the membership and I have the feeling to know these songs really well now. Now all I need to do is to practice the Grooves and play them and it will be so easy.
Perhaps one of the most important music performance lessons, and all without any actual technical demonstration. But couldn’t have articulated this any better myself. And this applies to all instruments, not just drums. Nice video!
I bought those over the ear headphones for use with my e-drum kit! Only recently did I try using them for music listening.... and they do sound pretty sweet!
Fun coincidence: as I bought my Roland E-Kit, I needed some decent headphones with it and the guy at the drumcenter recommended the Beyerdynamics and they are indeed awesome and I have a great time using them.
yes, same here. had to learn 17 songs in a short time. i have listened over and over to the studio and live recordings. then i picked a chunk of three songs, created lead sheets and repeat. i need two passes of this, first for basics like structure, breaks, changes. second pass for details related to vocals and lyrics. but listen to the song is a real time safer to me.
Air drum with the song whenever you listen to the song. Walking your dog? Put the song on and in your head picture how you would air drum. You can also air drum instead of picturing but your dog may be a little bit disturbed like my dog. Lol Driving? Just air drum by tapping on your wheel and taping your feet. (Better when you are on highway with cruise control on. I literally learned Tom Sawyer many years ago while listening to it and driving.
what do you think of this idea? use app like amazing slowdowner to loop the main groove and melody to get locked into the song? this is after listening to the entire song 3-5 times
Awesome lesson… probably one of the best I have watched about learning how to play songs…Oh, I burst out laughing when Steven mentioned his old method of learning a song.. I am guilty of doing the same thing… time to change! Thanks Steven
Excellent. ... I used to do this! Love the headphones tip. Got away from this a few years back to save time ... overtime I got worse at remembering songs ... I thought it was old age
This was super helpful. I’ve been listening but not with the focus you’re describing. Another thing I do is look at sheet music to help when I trying to learn more complicated stuff (eg Cherub Rock). I have trouble with just listening on those complex parts. Is that not recommended? What you shared about the melody is a huge aha for me. I will try this. In my band, the bass player is super awesome and chill and fun to play with. One vocalist is great but the other is hard to click in with. So I’ll ponder and experiment. Thanks for the great video! So helpful.
I listen to music on my headphones constantly but don’t do enough on my drums.I know lyrics to songs like the back of my hand and that’s not a pun because the jags wrote that song and I know that all the way through also.Sooner or later it will equal it’s self out😂
The ad bots are definitely listening because I just got an email from Sweetwater that those headphones are discounted right now. 10 minutes after I finished this video.
How to learn a song on drums??? Just listen to the beat, then play the beat.... hopefully with feel. Doesn't need to be note for note unless you're playing some iconic drum fill that everyone knows. It's not like you're the singer or actually playing a melodic instrument. Have fun, be a little creative.

I call it "active listening". It can be done for any instrument in a song, including voice.

My what a deep voice you have. Hey, I’m listening and commenting. You’re helping me, hopefully I’m helping your channel.

I find anything Megadeth, the mids are TANKED. SO hard to hear the part.
