  • What is AUS?
AUS is also know as Automatic Unloading System In Tanker.
This System is normally used In crude Oil tanker / Product tankers fitted with COP.
The main purpose of this system is to reduce the stripping time during discharging by efficiently pumping out all the cargo as bulk discharge.
This is system is integrated with COP and Cargo piping system
    Components
Cargo Pumps:- Pump out the Cargo from tanks to shore line
Cargo Separator:- Maintain a positive Flow of Cargo at the pump Suction
Separator Level Sensor:- Gives indication when Separator level Drops
Vacuum Pumps:- Suck out any Gas vapours accumulated inside the separator and pump casing.
Pneumatic Controlled Discharge valves:- Open and shut the discharge valve according to the level of separator
Gas Extraction Valves: Allow and restrict access between vaccum pump and separator
    How this Work?
When the level of oil in the separator drops certain level , The vacuum pump starts automatically and sucks out all the vapours from the separator , which creates a negative pressure inside the separator and more oil from the pile line will fill inside the separator, so that COP impeller never run dry.
The discharge valve of the COP is will also shut automatically when ever the oil level in the separators drops, so that the oil level in side the separator can be controlled.
When the oil level restores to normal the discharge valve will automatically open back to its sets position.

    Hello captain
In automode what is going to open GEV, by pneumatic air or by the vaccum that made by vac.pump?

Sir this cargo pump you are talking about ....is it the slop tank or they are both different???

      Main COP in pump room.
Vaccum pump also in pump room

    Good Explanation Sir,
however i have some doubt or maybe i miss,
    1. On slide no 3 said by AUS we will not throttle the Discharge valve, however next slide said that the low level sensor on separator also triggering the Discharge Valve to throttle and reduce discharge momently? Means the same procedure as manual (throttling disch valve), but by AUS its working automatically.
    2. During AUS working, and disch valve throttling without reducing RPM, is it safe for the COP?
    3. How much time vacuum pump running to suction vapour from separator untill reach upper sensor then it will stop?
    Thank You in advance, Sir!

      1. In ship without AUS , duty officer has to manually throttle the discharge valve to prevent suction loss.
In AUS ships , the system will detect the low level and automatically throttle the discharge valve so that pump suction wont lose and it never run dry, along with that vaccum pump pulls out the liquid from pipe line , it help in reducing stripping time.
      2. Yes its safe to do at lower RPMs
      COP is cetrifugal pump.
We normaly keep the pump discharge v/v shut during the starting of the pump, once we have sufficient RPM and discharge pressure at the discharge side then only we open the discharge V/V,
The point I wanna say is, these pumps are designed in such a way that momentarily opening and shutting of discharge valve at moderate RPMs won't damage the pump.
We use AUS only at the last stage of cargo operations where ullages is less in tanks, So the officer in watch must reduce the Pump RPM to a medium range well in advance.
      3. Vaccum pump also has 2 mode , manual and Auto.
If you select Auto mode the Running time of the pump will be decided by the level sensor inside the separator .
If oil level in separator touches the sensor it will stop.
If the vaccum pump is running continuously in auto mode then you have to check the tank sounding manually to confirm weather the tank is empty, or to check any of the valve in suction side is shut or open.
In manual mode all the sensor will be bypassed and duty officer will decide how much time the pump needs to run depending up on his experience and knowledge.

      @@sarathchandran528 Thanks Alot Sir!
      Very clear explanation.
For my question no.2 yes correct Sir, in my experience also discharge vlv keep close while the COP warming up RPM for abt 15minutes,
Indeed during close to completion of discharge the RPM should already reduce from max to mid RPM so its will be safe for COP.
      Thank You again Sir!
Keep it Up the content, really appreciate!

Sir, we are manufacturer of Caustic Soda Lye. We load tanker vehicle. For some customers when the vehicle reach to their site, they have storage tanks but don't have any unloading facilities. Sir, in this case how we can transfer Caustic Soda Lye from our tanker to their storage tanks. Your answer can help us a lot. Thanks in advance.

Hello pramod, I am not familiar with caustic soda transfer , I am not an expert, but i have some suggestions there are portable submersible pumps available in market (framo Pumps), these pumps are mainly hydraulic driven or electric driven. These pumps u can drop inside the tanker connect the discharge line to receiver side. Make sure the pump is rated for chemical.
