Thank you for stopping by! In this short video, I don't follow my entire process of creating but instead channel my inspiration: Joan Mitchell.
I love Joan's work and have for years. She creates in a loose, expressionistic, carefree way that really speaks to my heart. I decided to leave this one as is (and not follow my usual process of creating many layers before pulling it all together) and keep it for myself. I love it!

Hello and welcome! I'm Betty Franks and I create my vision of abstract fields of flowers using acrylic paints and pencils (and other mark-making tools). I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and travel a couple of times a year to Preko, Croatia (where my parents live). I started painting in 2012 and focused on abstract art in the summer of 2015. I have always said that if someone asked if a child painted one of my paintings, it would be the best compliment I could receive. When I look at Joan's paintings, I see a child.... completely free, uninhibited and a nonconformist. LOVE!!!!!!

Joan Mitchell is my art hero. I traveled to SFMOMA for the exhibit last year and found it to be an incredible lesson in painting. I found the huge scale of her work quite moving in person. I love this painting that you did, Betty!

Joan Mitchell is a favorite of mine. I got to see her piece in MoMA in NYC recently. super inspiring.
So cool! When I was in NYC last July, I saw a few of her pieces at MoMA. There was one large one that I just stared at in awe!

I actually hadn't heard of Joan Mitchell, but since watching your video I have become enamoured by her painting too. I have since researched her paintings a bit more and found several other videos with some good close ups of her work and realised her importance to abstract art. That got me here again to watch your video with greater understanding of your tribute! So I have to thank you for helping to widen my horizons. 🎨

Hahaha...yes, it was for the birds for sure!! However, even though I think of my art as mixed media, it didn't/doesn't contain THAT kind of mixed media!! 😜 Super happy in my new space!

Lovely as always to watch you work Betty -- love Joan Mitchell as well -- the first painting of hers that I ever saw was 'Ladybug' and it has always fascinated me that before finding out anything about the painting I knew at once that it had been painted by a woman -- one of the most incredible uses of color that I have ever seen.
OMG...I saw "ladybug" in NYC last July and fell madly in love with it. I didn't want to leave.

I live in a lovely but tiny cottage on the Wet (west) Coast of BC. I love it but it's challenging to find space for working. Worse yet is finding somewhere to contain the work once I've created it! I put up an outside studio space (really just a large, glorified tent) that I can work in when the weather is agreeable but I certainly can't leave anything out there come October.
Anyway, the more I watch you the greater my appreciation. Thanks
Thanks, Susan! My new studio is in a commercial building and there are rules about living there---basically, it's not allowed. And, I have a home. So, it's a nice refuge from everyday life! I'm very familiar with the Wet Coast. I lived in Seattle for almost 20 years before returning to (sunny) California. There's definitely challenges!
