    The first time I subbed, all the teacher left me was an attachment for a test. She asked me to make copies but didn't tell me how many. Good thing that I had a printer and ink so printed the test at home. I was thinking, "What if the sub did not have that?" I was so nervous because I did not even know the location of the copy machine or copy paper. Thank God for a kind librarian who saw me sitting in the parking lot (I got there super early!)and asked if I wanted to wait in the library for school to open. When I asked her where the copy machine was, she offered to make the copies for me. God bless this woman. She took away the stress of my first sub day. I'll never forget her!

      Awe that’s amazing!
      I’ve only had to make copies for the teacher one time.. and I didn’t know how either and was extremely awkward lol 😂 that was the only time and I can’t imagine leaving my sub to copy the work for the class! The teacher must have been in a hurry

    I just started as a teacher/instructional assistant and today was my first day. I was already nervous to start but so many teachers and subs are out due to covid, so they had me sub. I was not ready for that. It was chaotic for sure. But I think the more I’m there the more I’ll adjust and be confident. The hardest part was honestly walking in the halls. When I took them on a bathroom break they were all over the place and loud. I honestly had no control and it was embarrassing because other teachers had to shut their doors. I definitely need to work on my confidence and learn to get their respect. I appreciated teachers before but have a whole new level of respect for them.

    • @HighVibeTeaching
      @HighVibeTeaching  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes it is def a balancing act, but like I tell everyone, subbing is harder than teaching in terms of earning respect from the kids. The kids know you're a sub so they are going to take that and run with it. I will tell you, you are going to be such a stronger person after subbing lol. Perfect experience before becoming a teacher. It gets so much better, trust me!

    • @amberhenry7523

      This made me feel so much better. My first few sub assignments were pretty simple and generally ok. The class in a couple rooms was mildly chatty (it didn't bother me, I could hear and instruct fine, and it was in downtimes...but other teachers coming near the room came in to tell them the rule was voice level zero...oops, didn't know that, ok kids voice level zero) but other than that totally fine. I was psyched... Then, I had a class that constantly wanted to leave the room - get out of seats - talk - ignore work, they were young *first grade* and I simply could not get these children to calm down and focus. We did get our work done, we had a couple calm times during the day, but it was tough. I left with more lessons than wins (I call anything some may call a fail, a lesson)... It was only my 4th or 6th time subbing so I included in my note for the teacher that while the kids pushed boundaries, I'm new to subbing, and I apologized for how our day went. I haven't ran into that teacher since. I saw some of the kids and...they hugged me! Lol 😆. I was surprised by it. But I'm hoping the teacher hasn't decided I'm absolutely worthless. It makes me feel better that someone else had an early on experience where kids were more chaotic.

    Down to extra pencils for the students.
    I know how private their space is and respect that.
    So I had a teacher tell the students I went through her stuff ect, when i didn't even sit at her desk, I used the table.
    I confronted her and she was shocked
    I was more upset cause I go out of my way to not use a single thing of theirs, like tape, scissors ect, and was still accused. I'll never take an assignment of hers

    Thank you SO much for this!! I am a building sub at the same building in a wildly competitive district. They expect a lot and demand a lot. I am learning and often times or not thrown into insane circumstances. It has been really hard, and I am doing the best I can. But some days they don't listen because the teacher doesn't have structure.. then they act like it's me! It is hard, so hearing that it isn't like teaching is just what I needed!

    • @HighVibeTeaching
      @HighVibeTeaching  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! I hardest thing about subbing for me was that I didnt know the structure of the classroom and the student's behavior is extremely different when there is a sub in the room. Teaching is easier in some ways compared to subbing. Subbing is easier because you are able to leave and not worry about much once the day is over! Good luck with finding a job! YOU GOT IT!

      Yes!
      So I think its a good idea to greet students at the door and greet them.
      Once they come inside have your name on the board and wait at the front of the room. Introduce yourself and discuss the agenda for the day. Tell them that the teachers left detailed sub plans and you are going to follow what the notes tell you to do. It may not be the usual, but we will work together to get through the day/class period. I always mention I am making a Happy Face and Sad Face list too. Dont be nervous! Most the time, students love their subs. Maybe start subbing younger grades and to build your confidence. I hope this helped! :)

    Great tips, Bre. I'm subbing during the winter months (first day in a few weeks) and run a food truck from May-Oct. I thought talking about truck business and getting their thoughts/input and ideas from the students would be a great ice breaker. Too much personal info or distraction?

    • @HighVibeTeaching
      @HighVibeTeaching  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely not too much info! I have found, the more down to earth and chill you are, the better your subbing days go. Break the cycle of teachers being the dictators. This is what turns students (and myself) off from education. I talk about my business all the time with my students. Its amazing for them to know its an option for them. I never had the opportunity to learn about business as a kid so that would be so amazing for our future students

    This is fantasitc! I I am a Developmental Therapist for Early Intervention and want to return to the classroom after 19 years. After getting discharged from the Army and graduating college, I started as a classroom assistant looking for a teaching position. Over the summer I worked as a DT assistant and ended up loving being a Developmental Therapist. Now, at 40 something.....I still feel the pull of the classroom and am pursuing it. Yesterday I completed a classroom aid interview and tomorrow is a substitute phone interview. This video helped me to organize my thoughts and now I feel ready for tomorrow! I am also going to complete an interview for a 4th grade position. All three jobs are in the same school district. What advice can you give me to interview for the 4th grade position? (My daughters attended this district also) The interviews are coming fast, please advise!

    • @HighVibeTeaching
      @HighVibeTeaching  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kathy Schwerman In the interview I don’t know where you are but my district relationship building is the number one thing they care about. So I would definitely talk about how you would build the classroom community in order for students to grow and achieve. Also talk about how you differentiate for all your students because all students are different and they all have different needs. And once you get to know them on a personal level and build that relationship you can easily see what they need and you can help them.
      If you were subbing stick to the tips I talked about in the video. But if you were playing for the fourth grade position talk about relationship building and formative assessments to make sure that the kids are on track for every lesson. And talk about chunk in your lesson small enough so they are chewable chucks for your students.

    I'm so nervous about subbing because I really didn't do well in school at all, especially in Math, History and Science. I'm so nervous that I'll have to teach high school History and not know anything about the lesson. How much is a sub expected to know? By review lesson, do you mean you have the sub specifically teaching a lesson reviewing what they've learned, or instead is it usually a worksheet or a packet?

    • @HighVibeTeaching
      @HighVibeTeaching  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Technically, subs are only supposed to know what they were tested on to be a sub. By review lesson, I mean the classroom teacher has already taught the content. So typically, the sub would just have the students do practice of some kind which could be a worksheet or time on the computer. :) I hope that helped! :)
      Just dont stress! most the time... youre not really teaching.... just watching the class :)

    Hi! Thanks for sharing this awesome video! I just got hired as a short term sub here in IL but I am very nervous and whoever recruited me isn’t helping me or answering my questions. I just accepted an assignment that will be for 38 days and I don’t know for what grade it is. No one has called me from the school and I don’t even have a school badge so I don’t know what to do but I really want this job. I went back to school because my dream is to be a bilingual teacher one day and I have experience working with students as a tutor so I think this is the perfect job opportunity. It’s just that I feel I don’t have all the information I need and I’m not sure who to talk to. Help!

    • @HighVibeTeaching
      @HighVibeTeaching  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Congrats on the position! Have you tried calling the district?
      From what it sounds like to me and from prior experience, when you take a long-term sub position, the teacher prepares all lesson plans for you, I’ll work sheets for you, so basically you’re just subbing her class for 30 days. However if there aren’t any plans or you don’t know what to teach, usually the team, the grade level team will come in and help. I recommend calling the district who hired you, they may be out of the office because of the holidays but they should be back next week for sure. If you’re using a sub app sometimes the sub plans are in the app itself or you can check your district email they made for you in the sub plans might be in there too

    Not trying to be disrespectful but if you don't leave a 'real' lesson plan, then why is it so important to follow it? The reason why I ask is because in my school district I can only get there 10 minutes before class starts. It's really overwhelming to review a lesson plan in 10 minutes.

      dianadgb1 you’re right! What I do for a sub is review, I think it’s too much to ask a sub to teach an NEW lesson to my students when the sub doesn’t know my kids learning styles or personality or how the lesson format.
      What I mean by lesson plan in the video is follow the notes what the teacher left. Sometimes subs don’t follow the schedule for the day.

    do you think the eating at the desk still applies with covid? i’ve heard that many districts have closed down teachers lounges.

      I think as long as you sanitize and wipe down the desk after you eat you should be fine! But I’m still remote teaching so I have zero idea about protocol still!

    The best advice for substitute teachers is don’t substitute teach. There are enough regular jobs today that no one need humiliate themselves by substitute teaching anymore.
