I should have mentioned it in the video but 19ft lbs for the torque spec is VERY LIGHT when you're using the leverage of a long handled torque wrench. GO SLOW!

I just had a harrowing scare changing my 2015 228i oil which I'd done without incident before. I was getting substantial puddles of oil under my car. I panicked, imagining I somehow cracked the oil pan or put in a broken plug. (My drain plug is also plastic.) I replaced the drain plug but the problem remained. .I saw no oil near the filter so was baffled. Took it to a mechanic and on the lift they saw the oil had been coming out of the filter housing under compression and dripping down copiously. Turns out the problem was simply that that large grommet/seal had hiked up a little too high on the filter cap assembly. Just one thread too high and so essentially there was no seal and the oil was shooting out. Such a subtle error. Don't give yourself a stroke from worry and seeing dollar signs flying away in your living nightmare. Eyeball the seal before reinserting it into the housing to tighten down. One other frustration....I just couldn't replicate Mikey's reset procedure. I finally found a post that reminded me that at least on some models, mine included, you don't push that odometer reset button until after the initial indicators go away. If I pushed the reset right away as shown, a different set of menu options came up. No idea why some models differ on the reset. So avoid more frustration; if the immediate push doesn't work to get the oil reset option, wait till the indicators clear first before pushing that odometer button..
Awesome content! Just bought a used m235i and was slightly apprehensive with doing my own maintenance as this is my first bimmer.
Congrats on the new whip! Even if you're not very experienced working on cars, the basic maintenance jobs will help you become more confident in your wrench turning abilities. I try to explain everything to help even the most inexperienced person understand the how, what and why.
This car is an absolute blast to drive, even in stock form. 💪
The shop I left my BMW to forgot to put the middle part back when they replaced the filter.
The car presented an error message directly when driving home from the shop.
I went back the next day and asked if they could have a look at it.
They said no, they couldn't have caused it they said.
Change the oil and oil filter yourself, do not let bad "mechanics" destroy your car.

Amazing details as always. Thank you. My 2 cents worth, think I saw Mike did it but did not mention it. Suck out and perhaps wipe clean all the old oil inside the oil filter station. If you are doing oil change at home or have the time, let oil drip drain for 20, 30 minutes or longer to let as much oil drain down from the engine as possible. I do this with another of my car with a dip stick and very satisfying to see clear oil in dip stick even after a couple of weeks.
Great tutorial. I’m glad this car is much more user friendly than the previous BMWs and Audi’s I’ve owned in the past.

So you have to start the engine to check the oil level? Brilliant idea, BMW. Sure, you can measure how much you put in, but I'd wanna check the oil level before I start the engine just to be sure. And what if the sensor is faulty? You don't really wanna find that out the hard way. They should've just put a dip stick in it...
I know right!? But, there has to be a reason the dip stick was ditched. Engineers do engineering things. I spent at least 30 minutes last night on the Google box looking for an explanation as to why they axed it. There's a lot of skepticism from owners, but I never saw anything from BMW as to why.
Nice video. Very detailed and not boring👌. One thing I would like to know is how to take out the plastic cover on the engine.
Just lift up on it from the edges on the bottom. One hand on each side and pull up, no tools needed.

@@TheWrenchLab one more question. It looks like my car is set to remind me to do an engine oil change every year(every 15000 miles), I feel like that's a lot of time to change oil. Should I do it less like every 8-10 thousand? I dont drive too crazy with the car either.
There's a lot of talk about this 15k mile subject and a lot of people speculate why it was changed... One of the main speculations is that it's been a way for BMW to reduce their operating costs with their free service plan. Lure buyers in with free service on a car they'll only have for 24-36k miles. At this point they'll be wanting to get the newest fancy models coming out. That's 2 mayyyybe 3 oil changes going by the 15k mileage recommendation.
In BMW's defense, synthetic oils do last longer than petroleum based conventional oils.
In my humble opinion: If you bought your car used, and you're going to do your own maintenance, you intend on keeping the car for years to come. My advice: Since you mentioned you don't drive the car very hard you could leave a full synthetic oil in until 15k miles, if you don't live where the vehicle is subjected to extremes in climate. But, I'd recommend swap the filter out at 7,500 miles. This is for someone that doesn't mod thier car, drag race, AutoX, rarely revs the car past 5k rpms and drives less than 10k miles a year. If that's the case, just change the oil and filter every 6 months and you should be fine. But, since it's not terribly difficult to change the oil, I'd say stick to 8-10k miles for oil and filter. If you recently bought the car I say change oil immediately and see how the oil looks and smells. Check the oil filter to make sure the previous owner was using the Mann filter. I have read a lot about the different filters people have tried in their BMWs and every says stick with Mann.
For me and how I drive my car... I'm the drag racing, AutoX'ing, qualifying laps on the way to get hot-dog buns from the store, on my way to 15-20k miles a year. I'll change the oil and filter every 3-5k miles, inspect my magnetic drain plug and taking a picture of it for reference. I bought my used 2015 M235i back in May with 35k miles on it. I have every intention of modifying it, doing a full season of AutoX and drag racing every other week. 😁🤣 That's why I bought this car. An N55 motor in a small 2 door. Recipe for speed! I hope I answered your question hahaha

stick with oem bmw oil filters. sometimes aftermarket can shrink up and prevent proper oil pressures.
Mann brand is OEM. They manufacture filter products for BMW.

Hey Kyle! In my megabuild series, I ended doing an oil change in conjunction with that whole mod list. I used LiquiMoly MolyGen. The stuff that comes in a green bottle. The oil is green that glows bright green under a black light! 💚 It helps you find oil leaks, if you have them!
I added 6.1 L of oil after letting the car drain forever. My measurement still shows I have max amount of oil. I swear that screen is fake, lol. Next time I am going to put 5 L just to see. Thanks for the great video. On a separate note, do you plan to do any injector or valve cleaning? Does one need to worry about those on N55 engines, being they are direct injected.

I would like to to the walnut blast to clean the valves but don't have the tools yet. It's definitely on my list of maintenance items before next summer. Not sure I'll do the injectors unless I have an issue.

Since I've only used the JB4 for tuning, I would say it's the best bamg for the buck that I have.
Coolest mod, hands down the Turner carbon intake! Looks amazing and make the car sound COMPLETELY different. Makes it actually sound like a turbo car. Love it! No check engine light either! 😁

Mine is still under warranty (7/20) and I have an extended warranty. Do you think my warranty company could discover use of the tuner and void the warranty? Appreciate your sharing any thoughts on either or these.
@@nkr3637 as far as tuners that you can easily switch back to stock: a flash tune from either BM3(boot mode) or MHD. those you can flash the tune for easily and be able to go back to stock just as easily. There are quite a few videos on both. Provided you have the correct dongle to connect your phone to the car, it's pretty easy. Speedy GonzF22 has a BM3 video showing how to flash it with your phone. I can't think of an MHD demo video off the top of my head. BM3 is all the rage right now anyway.
As far as the warranty company discovering it... I don't think so. I mean, they could do a deep dive in the ECU if they suspected it, but I highly doubt that. If the car is completely stock other wise, there would be no reason to suspect it.

Can you access the oil drain plug by jacking one side and removing a front wheel instead of using the centre jack location?
Yeah, absolutely.
You neevr showed taking the engine cover off or why you took it off..anyways, changing my m235i out with redline tomorrow, haven't changed my own oil in like 10 years, lol. Had to make sure nothing changed much.

Does this vehicle have a dip stick? I have an oil extractor and like to do top-side oil changes when possible.
No, there isn't a dipstick on these bimmers. I wish it was that easy.
Hi, Good video, the 5w-40 Is the viscosity on the service manual? Or you choose this viscosity for some razon ?
I picked the 5w40 because it's a little bit thicker at operating temp. This isn't my daily driver and I absolutely punish the car every time I drive it. 5w30 is the recommend oil for North America. You can never go wrong with the BMW oil. If you'd prefer something else, make sure it's "BMW Long life 01 approved". That means BMW actually approves the use of that specific oil. 👍

I just did my oil changed and filled with recommended oil. I measured it shows 17% , wtf. How accurate is that ?
Drain plug!? The car's on a level surface, right? 6 liters of oil?
My is an x3, f25, n55 , 35i xdrive 2014 v6 twin turbo, I used about 7 quartz oil. I did a measurement before and after and get similar results 17-18 %. Off course on level in my garage. This is not the first time I didan oil change on it. The same 6 months ago but oil drained was more than 5 quarts.
Is it telling me that I am getting a leaky valve gasket cover or oil filter gaskets.? I noticed my belts are shiny and engine oil is more likely but not sure if it cones from valve gasket or filter?
@@benten6301 if you put that much oil in and it is only reading 18% then you probably have a faulty oul level sensor.
Did you get a check engine light? Do you have a scan tool?

Not sure if someone can help me, but the measuring oil level computer always shuts out at 15% and goes back to the start measurement screen.

Make sure the parts inside the oil filter are installed correctly. i. e. The bird cage and o-rings.
Where do I buy that oil filter housing adapter? You think a strap wrench would suffice in a pinch?
I talk about thatbatuff at the end. You can get one at most local auto part stores. You could use a strap wrench, as long as it's clean and dry so you can get a good grip.

You can never go wrong with BMW TwinPower Turbo 5W-30 oil. That'll be fine for your car for the year round temperatures you'll experience. You can use any brand oil as long as it says BMW Longlife-01 approved if you prefer to buy something else. You can get both on the ECS Tuning website. Click the link in description. Just make sure you find the 5w30 if you wanna use the LiquiMoly. They sell the entire oil change kit, Oil/filter/gaskets/ all in one.
