Great video - I love that you said not to separate cicks from their mom. From my own experience, I've seen myself how attached moms and babies are, and how much babies raised by their mama learn so much more than babies raised in a brooder!
Thank you so very much for the good info I got baby chicks for the first time hatching this afternoon and Mama hen just wants to be left alone with her babies in the coop in the nesting box. I have three other hens that are really good-natured and I don't think I have anything to worry about considering Mama Hen is very protective. She doesn't even want me getting close to them. I've heard a million different answers that yours enlightens me that it'll be okay just letting them be for now. I have plenty of room in my coop😊
When we put our chicks in the coop we build a place for the chicks to see the others but they cant get bullied also i take the sweetest chicks to see how they do and they are great thanks for tips! They were store bought

I've raised hens with no roosters.first time introducing roos and adding a flock to my babies I raised and first time allowing a hen to brood and hatch out...so far so good..but still a bit anxious about how to do it so none suffer or stress..thank you
awesome insight..but, mine seem to grow slower while with mama as opposed to when i raise them..however, the bonus of mama is that i do not have to keep checking on the chicks..
Great video Becky. I find it easier to not change routine. I still throw the food on the ground. Only thing I do is add a smaller waterer that they can reach but I don't remove the large the one I have. I reccomend if separating mama and chicks, just separate them to a section inside the coop that way they can still intact and you won't have to reintroduce.
Hi, I am new to your channel. My husband and I purchased 4 chicks yesterday at TSC. They are a week old. I have been watching a lot of your videos ( and have learned so much). I got a back of oyster shells today for their grit. But on the bag it says to not feed it to them at this age. But in this video you said to ground it up right? I noticed some really small pieces in the bag. Can I feed that to them? I don't want to buy ANOTHER bag of chick grit which they will outgrow way before they finish it. Thanks!! Love your farm😀
Becky you’re looking great! I had my first set of chickens born this fall and I separated the moms and babies for few days and then let them be around the flock. The moms protected the babies so it worked perfectly.
I have a 10x 12 little shed that was suppose to be my personal gardening / craft shed that one of our little bantams has decided to move into and started getting broody. I had my suspicions, so I candled a few eggs and sure enough, so we modified the shed to be her private spot. This morning while handing out food we heard the meek little cheeping and my husband was ready to grab a lamp and tub and move the chicks, but I insisted he wait because I didn't want her stressed more than she probably already was and so I could make sure we got it right. Thank you for this video because you confirmed my suspicions and from your mouth to his ears, I got him make a few adjustments ( a new home for the other chickens who followed her in there ) so that she and the chicks can have that shed to themselves at least until the chicks can avoid being picked on. Now I know it is best to just let her do her thing, just as I suspected.
It's great to let the momma to do it forsure! But in my experience, I remove the babies now. Although the mother hens did great! I had other chickens and ducks killing the babies.

I put marbles in the bottom of pie plates for the water. That way they can drink without getting wet. I let the Mama's raise the chicks but keep them in a separate pen until they get pullet size.
1st time raising babies - I have 6-month old Bantams - 2 roos & 3 hens. (straight run) raised from 3-day old...I also, 2-month old blk. cochin - 4 hens. (so fluffy) The babies have been in a crate side by side w the bantams since I got them, always in sight of each other. So they are not strangers. I have been Chix sitting daily while letting the babies out of their own COOP, with-in the same chix run. Still not strangers. I realize they will have a "pecking order" FINIALLY today, I decided Today was the day...hope all goes well - come morning. I can't Free-Range because I live on a River & I have LOTS of "birds of prey". I lost a baby roo, to a hawk...under netting cover. (ripped threw it) I'm planning on building a "Tunnel" so my flock can get into the Chix Tractor, ( I'm am planning on building) So much work, and much worth it. I picked the WRONG birds for eggs, (Sibright/bantams) but oh well, I'm a Newby. Maybe my Cochins will deliver. :D All in the fun of learning. Plz no hate...just teach. Chix Love

My (1st flock) April 6, 2020, Sibright chicks, (3 hens & down to 2 roos) One is now a hen sitting on 3 eggs before Christmas, she decided to get up & go out, so I took her eggs...Now she is back to sitting. I'm guessing I have a Broody Hen. This is so much fun. I'm so new at this. I hope I do all the right things...her nesting box is actually (an inside the coop dust bath), on the floor, below the actually nesting boxes. I'm planning on letting Mother Nature do it's thing (w a watchful eye)...I have two options, if raising everyone (4 Cochins hens- I raised July 17th 2020, 2 Sibright hens & two roos) doesn't work. I have a (separate) Small Coop w/in the RUN area...that will house 4 adult hens, that I can use or & also have a Dog Crate that I used to raise my 6 Sibright. Signed; Nervous Mama Seuzz Hen...lol

It’s the middle of winter and my hen decided to get broody, she has 2 eggs so it’s manageable . But our coop is really small so I will put them in a cage kennel in the greenhouse with a heat lamp also. I hope they will be ok.
We introduced our broody chicken to new feed store chicks and she immediately adopted them and is fiercely protective of them. They are in a rabbit hutch until the chicks are a little bigger. I’m afraid of the rest of the flock going after them.

My mama hen has been killing her chicks - honestly she's been killing them as quickly as she layed them at this point - she keeps trampling them. I had separated her and a babies in a cage about half the size of your flip coop. I had to cage them to keep them from the other chickens (including my two huge roosters) and also to keep them safe from feral cats. What could be the problem? She was more careful the first time she had chicks - but this time I've got less chicks let than from her first batch - even though she actually hatched way more chicks! First gang she hatched about 14 and 10 have made it and are now nearly full grown. This batch she hatched 16 but only 8 are left - and they just reached two weeks today. Did she suddenly get clumsy? Is it deliberate? Her cage is directly next door (it's actually one cage the size of your flip cool just separated in half) to some older chicks whose mama (her sister) was stolen about a month ago. She doesn't seem to like them very much, constantly lunging at them at attacking them across the fence. Is that the problem? Is she too stressed having them around and that's what's making her careless? Is my cage just too small? Also if I make any changes will it stop the mortality? I've actually taken them away from her today - she is not too happy about it but I was finding a dead one every day and I had hoped to at least match the numbers from her first batch.
I have two small flocks..one i raised from babies, the other 7 hen flock given to me..one of those hens hatched 8 chicks 5 days ago..my chicken coop is a 2 car garage...I have space..I separated momma before hatch to my other garage....so she's living solo with her chicks...based on your videos..I intend to keep momma and babies separate for 2 weeks...I have a coop and run I bought that fits nicely in 2 car garage coop..which I can attach to an outside hoop run my husband built..keeping momma and babies together but separate from other 13 chickens..until 8 weeks old or as big as other hens..does that seem practical? I trust my hens..they are actually very kind to eachother..I have two roos, one i raised who I can cuddle and hand feed, the other roo was given to me, a small banti..hes a hellion..verocious..thinking of giving him away..he is a problem..thats another story..anyway..I pay attention to you and I thank you for your advices
We have 2 mom's that hatched chicks together. This has happened 3 times this month. It's pretty hard to grab the chicks since both mom's will fight you or anything else. I think they'll be safe with them two as defense.
This is so helpful thank you! I have my very first broody chicken and she is diligently sitting on her eggs. I'm so excited to have little babies. I was going to bring the little in to keep them safe but I think now I will move momma and babies to what I call our "penthouse coop" so they can grow and she can be with them every step of the way. The other chickens will be able to come right up to it and interact but not get to them at all. How long should I leave momma and babies in there together? Will momma have a rough time reintegration with the other when it's time? She's our roosters favorite hen so I know he will be missing being near her all the time.
I had to take my chicks away from their mother right after hatched. Luckily I was there to witness this because she and her sister have been laying on the same eggs and both attacked the newly hatched chick and I had already found one half eaten in the nest. I hated that my hens couldn't raise their own chicks
What breed are those chicks? I am confused. Looks like a black astralorp momma, but I know those are not astralorp chicks! Are they "barnyard" chickens?
Well their all pretty small. Keep an eye on them, a lot of times the bigger ones will lay on top of the little ones at night and squish them to death☀️❤️☀️
Please help me Becky we have a hen siting on eggs they have movement but shes siting on them in a nest box 3ft in the air and the coop has wire big enough to keep chickens in but not chicks out and out dogs have killed chickens and chicks so i think i might need to separate them when they hatch and our coop has 5 chickdns in a 6 by 8ft coop with 25ft run and hanging watere um worked if they jump out nest box the 3ft jump may kill them
Well would a mother with a new born baby be in the middle of street with lots of people around? Of course not. So it is for the hen mom. Just separate her and her babies for a while.

Hi Becky! Thanks forbthe video- I am 1 year into my first chickens amd just had two hatch, they are almost 3 weeks old. Mama seems to be getting a bit stir crazy. I want to put them in the coop in a cage so they can integrate with the flock, just wonder when is a good time to let them around the rooster? Should i separate the rooster from the hens for a while or just hope mama will protect them from him?
My hen is hatching today! But it's going to get down to 45° tonight! Do you think I should move momma and babies in the garage?? I don't know why she choose fall 😕 lol help! Love your video's!!
Question can a chicken be a mix of three or just 2 if so wonder April will be like her mom a silke and Americana mix or have 1 gene from mama and a mix of it's dad a gamefowl
For me, I prefer to separate chicks from Ma hen immediately after hatching so that Ma hen can go on with her life and lay eggs again. Maybe cruel but this is how you breed your chickens fast without incubator.
Beacky my hen hatched 4 chick's and I wanna separate but I will let them keep together. She bites my mama and me when we feed them , we thought if we do so she might calm down and start lying eggs but it's cruelty. Thx 4 ur tips.
So I live in Canada and its -30 outside and our heat lamp broke when we tried to lower it. We brought the chick into the house, is it safe to bring the chick back when we have a new light bulb? Will the mom chicken recognize it?

Wow it is the total opposite over here. They grow much faster and are much smarter when mama hen raises her babies☀️❤️☀️

I got my 1st glock of chickens today. They are pullers, Bard Rock and Rhode Island Reds a total of 6 hens and 1 rooster.

Put them under her at night. Sometimes it works, but keep a close watch on them Incase you have to pull them out and be mama☀️❤️☀️
For my baby chicks get crushed eggshells for grit and calcium.

I had to take my chicks away from their mother right after hatched. Luckily I was there to witness this because she and her sister have been laying on the same eggs and both attacked the newly hatched chick and I had already found one half eaten in the nest. I hated that my hens couldn't raise their own chicks

That's great advice thank you but when the chicks hatch are the other hens likely to attack them and kill them?
What breed are those chicks? I am confused. Looks like a black astralorp momma, but I know those are not astralorp chicks! Are they "barnyard" chickens?

I’m keeping 4 week old chicks, 2 1/2 week old chicks and 3 day old chicks together in one brooder 16 together and not 1 death so far!
Well their all pretty small. Keep an eye on them, a lot of times the bigger ones will lay on top of the little ones at night and squish them to death☀️❤️☀️

Please help me Becky we have a hen siting on eggs they have movement but shes siting on them in a nest box 3ft in the air and the coop has wire big enough to keep chickens in but not chicks out and out dogs have killed chickens and chicks so i think i might need to separate them when they hatch and our coop has 5 chickdns in a 6 by 8ft coop with 25ft run and hanging watere um worked if they jump out nest box the 3ft jump may kill them
Well would a mother with a new born baby be in the middle of street with lots of people around? Of course not. So it is for the hen mom. Just separate her and her babies for a while.

Hi Becky! Thanks forbthe video- I am 1 year into my first chickens amd just had two hatch, they are almost 3 weeks old. Mama seems to be getting a bit stir crazy. I want to put them in the coop in a cage so they can integrate with the flock, just wonder when is a good time to let them around the rooster? Should i separate the rooster from the hens for a while or just hope mama will protect them from him?

For me, I prefer to separate chicks from Ma hen immediately after hatching so that Ma hen can go on with her life and lay eggs again. Maybe cruel but this is how you breed your chickens fast without incubator.

So I live in Canada and its -30 outside and our heat lamp broke when we tried to lower it. We brought the chick into the house, is it safe to bring the chick back when we have a new light bulb? Will the mom chicken recognize it?
