    Dude, you have me so excited to get my new bike!!! I live in northern NC and I have the 2017 1290 Super Adventure R being delivered mid April. My wife and I go on weekend trips to the outer banks and the mountains now on my Honda NC700X, when she just saw that top bag with the back rest she freaked out. The guy at the KTM dealership where I ordered my bike told me to pick out around $2500 worth of accessories for free. You made up my mind on the KTM hard bags.
    Thanks!

      @2WR  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First off, congrats on the new bike (I'll be testing on of those just as soon as it's delivered and can't wait!) It's going to be a huge step up from the NC700x in terms of power, handling and comfort. Your wife is gonna love that top case even more once she sits on the bike.

    Watched the video... I have the 1190 R, and spend 30% of my riding time on teeth rattling terrain. I have the KTM Pannier bags that have top & bottom mounting points. Very stable. My only complain is that the mounting points R & L side of the bike are too far from the bike frame giving the bike a very wide posterior. I like how the bags presented in the video are mounted close to the bike, and accommodate the tailpipe. Probably not for me due to the mounting design.

  • @MrKromy67
    @MrKromy67 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would double check if the vibration is coming from the case or a bad balance performed. Some shops don't really care as much as they should. Definitely they are not for off-road but in case of a fall any bracket could brake or damage the soft bags.

      @joshafj 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll have to check that one out for sure. I have some simple zipper bags for the tank and tail, but locking ones would be nice. Not sure what they would look like on a Ninja, but having that extra security would be nice to have.

    Thanks for the video on the bags. There is a Super Adventure at our local KTM dealer in LR.I'm torn right now between getting a 2016 1190 Adventure R, a 2017 1090 Adventure R, or a 2016 Super Adventure. I live in Arkansas near the Ouachita Mountains and honestly any of these would burn up a rocky National Forrest trail...but I kinda want one I can ride from Little Rock to California too in comfort.

    • @2WR
      @2WR  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want a bike to go cross-country the 2016 Super Adventure is probably your best bet. With a larger windscreen and cruise control (an easy an on) the 1190 would do fine cross country and be better for trail riding. The jury is still out on the 1090 until I can throw a leg over one.

  • @Melowedaze1
    @Melowedaze1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Maybe they have updated these Panniers and top case since this video but you are able to open the top case with one hand if you push the left top case latch first then the right..... the left stays down until you relatch the lid. This action makes it so you can open one handed.

    I couldn't wait to get rid of these when I got the bike (2015)(no top case). Had one warranty box replacement on the right side, the latch pin fell out. The other side would not latch when it got hot. Had to slam it so many times I put a dent in it. Not a fan of the two hand operation. Mechanism felt like it would break at any time. Side opening to me meant if it opened accidently, the contents could fall out. Put down some money for Touratech Zega Pro Panniers. All problems gone, probably shouldn't have gotten black. Pros (when it worked): roomy, integrated one lock key operation. Bike looks great when they are removed.

    Thanks for the informative videos. I am in shopping mode for a new bike with the KTM 1290 SA and the BMW R1200 GSA being the two serious contenders. When you get to a point where you are performing chain maintenance, i.e. slack adjustment and lubrication, please post a video on the subject. Also, what is your height? I am 5'9"+ with a 32" inseam and wondering if this bike would be a good fit or too tall.

    • @2WR
      @2WR  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      4,000 miles in and the chain is still within spec but I will definitely make a video when adjustment time comes. I've lubed it a few times (easy to do with the center stand). I'm 5'10" with a 32" inseam; should fit you well.

    Hi Mario
    I had a reasonable speed crash on the border of Ecuador, Peru in slippery conditions and also on Ruta 40 and the panniers actually just popped out, no damage at all. My first thought (after turning the bike off of course) was the panniers, I was pretty shocked as I thought I would break them, but no, on both occasions, the top case and a side case popped out and went straight back in. So, I dont know if this is a feature, or if it just happened, but they worked!

    Just bought 2017 KTM 1290 SA. T. The reviews were great and your videos were a big help. Was going to get the back case and backrest for wife to get comfortable. How does backrest mount to case. Dealer said adhesive and a review I saw said bolt on but no directions. Wanted to find out before I order one. How did you mount yours and is it comfortable for your passenger or should I get a different after market one. Thanks

    • @2WR
      @2WR  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your dealer is incorrect. It attaches with screws. If you look inside the top case (use a flash light) you'll see two little indentations that are your template for drilling. As for comfort, Kristen never complained during out 7,300 mile trip so I'd say it's pretty good.

    Ordering a new 1290 Adventure R soon and instead of the factory bags, going with the metal ones. Loved the overview but I don't want to run the risk of these bags breaking with a fall. If you're ever headed up North to Mass, let me know.

      Thanks bud, had a Ducati Hyper 821 for a few years, bought that new, added the trekker bags, aux lights, damper, hand guards, etc. Tried turning a motard into a travel bike. After putting 18,000 miles on it I decided I needed a bigger bike with all the bells and whistles. KTM has their bikes loaded out the door compared to Ducati and BMW, you're paying close to 30 grand when you option them out, a bit ridiculous! -I also go to Long Island every summer as well, but I have plans for a Canada trip too. Ride safe.

    • @2WR

    Excellent review! I do like the convenience of the hybrid top/side loading but think that they are best for road (local) as you mentioned. They are plastic after all. And yes they do jitter around a bit on the highway maybe causing some vibration throughout the entire bike. I have had my 2016 SA since Sept of 2016 and I have not been on any long trips yet. I have researched many hard panniers and in my opinion, the Globescout panniers are by far the most bomb-proof. They are even wider than the KTMs measuring 41" across!

    Any protection to put on the bike over the panniers? I'm thinking if the bike drops, or bags don't properly seat into the bracket and the pannier falls off ... dooohhh! Note: You can lock the panniers with out properly seating onto the brackets, and yet it feels seated and stays on :( . These bags don't have the strongest external case.

    I went through 4 sets of those bags with latch issues. The final straw was when one of them fell off in the middle of the road when I was traveling in NC. the brackets are extremely flimsy. if you are planning on going offroad or taking a long trip that requires a decent amount of gear " even super lightweight "back packing" gear, these things will fail you. pay the extra money for better bags.

  • @georgedafifth
    @georgedafifth 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just bought a 2016 Super Adventure and while riding with both saddle bags plus the top bag on, I noticed the 1290 SA starts shaking at speeds greater than 85 mph as I am passing vehicles on the highway. Assuming it’s because of the lack of aerodynamics of the ktm bags. Thoughts?

    • @2WR
      @2WR  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Page 83 of the owner's manual. "Unstable handling characteristics at high speed. -Adapt your speed according to your payload. Ride more slowly if your motorcycle is loaded with cases or other baggage. Maximum speed with luggage 150 km/h (93.2 mph)." So yep, the big square boxes catch a lot of wind. May also want to adjust your suspension settings for 1 up plus luggage if it's not already set on that one.

    • @georgedafifth
      @georgedafifth 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am aware of this ... and as a result the suspension was set at 2 up plus luggage. The real question is, "is there a bolt on (triangular cone) to the front sides of these bags to make them more aerodynamic at higher speeds?”

    • @2WR
      @2WR  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not that I've seen thus far. You could try the "floating case carrier kit" which is supposed to help. Earlier this year they released another set of bags for the ADV bikes that "look" more aerodynamic but I haven't read or heard if they actually are.

    • @georgedafifth
      @georgedafifth 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought the floating case carrying kit, had it installed and then road the bike to a (safe :) 105 mph and no issues of fish tailing. It works differently than one might think ... it truly floats (i.e., moves) so as to get out of the way of the wind. In other words, the high speed wind cannot cause enough pressure on the flat surface of the bags, as the bags are floating and therefore moving (out of the way of the wind), which means there is not enough wind force (pressure) on the flat surface of the bags to apply pressure onto the frame, causing the bike to slowly fish tail at high speeds.

    • @2WR
      @2WR  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      George, thanks for the info. I've seen that kit and wondered how well it worked.

  • @sfcmathews32
    @sfcmathews32 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    These bags are okay. They're not what I would consider a long lasting solution and I agree that the locks need regular lubrication to remain operational but they work well for me. I keep my rain gear in the smaller, muffler side and use the other one for carrying crap around. I don't do much offroading but the times I've ridden down a gravel road, I didn't notice too much vibration. I think the full size box is pretty spacious, large enough for a 2x helmet or a load of groceries.

    • @2WR
      @2WR  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I were outside the US market and had to buy them separate, I'd go for a more heavy-duty solution but to come standard with the bike, I don't have many complaints.

    • @sfcmathews32
      @sfcmathews32 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, mine have developed a new problem. When I stick the key in to lock or unlock the bags and pull the key out, I have to hold the lock cylinder with my thumb or the whole lock cylinder comes out with the key. I have to take it in and get some little cheap clip replaced that broke off on the back of the cylinder. I agree, Khaja, very disappointing.

    Important! : For anyone having trouble with the locking mechanism (getting it to latch) : loosen the screws of the locks (backside, on the inside of the panniers) a quarter turn or more, all of them. Problem solved! Found it out the hard way on the way to the nothcape. Couldn't close the cases by any means because I left the bike under a tree at night and resin covered everything on the bike, sticking everything to everything. Loosened the screws just a tad and they have been great even since, warm or cold, clean or covered in snow and muck. No problems! Hope this helps some people!

    As good as this video is , the panniers are far too expensive at over £800 and the key doesn't match the KTM Givi top box I have. Personally I think they're a waste of money.

    Hi guys. Let me give my opinion as a former user. There's no other way to say it, this is a fact: these panniers are a piece of sh&%, and too dangerous, they shake a lot and create a big wobble on the front, i could not go more than 150/160kms/h. Also the locks are no good, you always need to lube them so they can work. I fell on the snow (very soft fall in Morocco last Easter), no more than 5/10kms/h and the pannier cracked and broke the plastic tooth that goes inside the suport. Sold them soon as a could and bought the givi outbacks...great panniers, very solid on the bike, and i can go 220/230kms/h without any probs. Also they look a lot better (but that's personal opinion).

    • @2WR
      @2WR  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While I don't agree that they're total "sh&%" but you're right about the speed, tip over etc. Glad you got some bags that work well for you. Safe riding!

      One thing to note is these bags come FREE with the bike when you buy it new.
      I have used these bags for calgary alberta to Prudhoe Bay Alaska and later from Calgary to New Orleans.
      My plan was it use them till they died and after two years and forty thousand kilometres they are still waterproof and work great.

      Interesting ..... I never like those Stock Plastic or Semi-Plastic Panniers that manufacturers put on the ADV bikes, I got the Stock Aluminum Panniers on my GSA and they take lot beatings with no problems, and for most of the "Problems" a hummer will bring them back in no time ......

    • @Spoonboy79
      @Spoonboy79 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are absolutely correct. I have had a 1290 Super adventure for 3 years, and both of my "free" panniers were busted within six months. The latching mechanism is an over-complicated piece of cheap plastic. This is an adventure bike that comes stock with CRASH BARS and if it falls over it WILL break off the plastic internal locking/latch mechanism! I broke 3 of the mechanisms before I tossed the cases and just got some TUSK cases that have been indestructible. As for the cost of them, at the time the Super Adventure was $2500 more than the 1190. Cruise control and a heated seat isn't worth $2500, part of that cost is the cases..

  • @nic8376
    @nic8376 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    1290 Super Adventure has a safety flaw in its design, the motorcycle has a major safety problem.
    I bought mine six month ago and since day one I have been experiencing head wobble at speed ranging from 100 to 120 mph.
    I contacted the dealer and they said “there is a software upgrade regarding the head wobble”
    I took the motorcycle to the dealer, after the software upgrade I discovered that the four setting for the damping is not working any more there is not difference in the performance between sports, street, comfort or off-road.

    Agree. These panniers are sh1t. Locking mechanism jammed shut after two years light use. Key turns but box doesnt open. Check for yourself the locking mechanism feels like it was nade out if second hand lego bricks. Shame on KTM.
