Total War at the Ashmolean Museum: Storms, Wars and Shipwrecks

- This year, Creative Assembly were invited to contribute to the ‘Storms, Wars and Shipwrecks’ summer exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, UK.
Telling the story of the pivotal Mediterranean island of Sicily over the last 2500 years, the exhibition features a range of incredible artefacts recovered by underwater archaeologists from the surrounding sea bed. Including treasures as varied as ship anchors to soldiers’ armour, and from amphorae to a byzantine church interior the exhibit is a fascinating exploration of ancient cultures and the story of the modern-day divers who worked to uncover them.
One of the key exhibits is a display of Roman and Carthaginian warship rams, thought to be from the Battle of the Egadi Islands in 241 BC. To help illustrate these giant weapons, Creative Assembly have created a video re-enactment of the battle using the Total War: ROME II game engine and art, which is projected on to the wall behind the display.
The Battle of the Egadi Islands was an important turning point in the First Punic War, more about the battle and the exhibition can be seen in this video short.
The Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology in Oxford was founded in 1683 and is home to thousands of diverse artefacts dating from 8000 BC to the present day, representing most of the world’s great civilisations. The Storms, Wars and Shipwrecks exhibition is open now and runs until the 25th September.

Actually you have to understand that whatever CA shows as being close to the real battle it's basically all bollocks because we know so little about ancient naval warfare... crucially, we don't even know how a quinquereme looked like, we just assume it's a bigger trireme.
For example, even though most Roman and Carthage ships were "fives" (quinque), in this video it just shows "threes" (tri).
So ships twice the size are lighter and more nimble? What are you smoking. They used the wrong ship type in this video.
Carthaginian vessels were better constructed and were in fact faster than the Roman ones even though in terms of size they were pretty much the same... what gave the advantage to Rome in these naval battles was the "corvus" a nifty little invention that made boarding Carthaginian ships much easier... and since Carthage relied on ramming the enemy ships to win, they were pretty much screwed.
Polybius in his writings gives ample evidence to how fast ships from Carthage were because they could easily disengage from Roman ships and run away or attack again.
Of course, as years passed by, Rome got better at ship building and naval warfare.

Been playing Total War since Rome 1. I could honestly say that Warhammer is a well crafted game, it doesn't suck at all, it just doesn't appeal to everyone. Stop claiming that it's a stupid game, feedback says contrary. The studio did a bang up job.

Yeah, more free content would be nice. Also, if they can bring back settlement battles, that would be better. I miss siege battles from Rome 2.
My only beef with TW Warhammer is it is more of a Warhammer game than a total war game. I mean battles are quick, which is fine for some units, there are NO formations, and the sieges are basically devoid of strategy. Oh and no siege battles and tiny unit rosters for the empire races. The dwarves and chaos have good variety and balancing though.
That's very accurate, I feel like I was playing a table top. They did away with many features that previous titles had. It's a bit frustrating how they managed to introduce spells, hero units, and such but also at the same time removed the complex siege mechanic that Attila had. Still a great game, gonna have even more fun with mods from the community.

as much as i have mixed feelings for Rome 2 as a total war game, i think it does a good job of showing how the battles happend.
people say we want this Total War or that Total War but they keep forgetting one of if not the best game in the series- Medieval 2 Total War.

Cool video, it worries me how hostile everyone seems to be against CA about everything they do. However, the beastmen DLC should drop in price, i imagine that it did not sell very well. Most people dont seem to care about the mini campaigns.
They shouldn't have all the other factions other than the first free 4 DLCS they should have beast men and elves as no cost factions

I don't hate CA however I do hate their business practices. For every game they have a crucial nation that they sell as a pre order bonus, they usually sell a unit pack rather than update them into the game, they also sell a blood and gore pack instead of updating into the game, and they also sell a bunch of overpriced minor nations and campaigns.
I wish that they would just update units and the blood and gore animations into the game of they aren't able to have them at launch, it's ridiculous to sell such trivial things as DLC when they could easily be modded into the game.
I also wish that instead of selling the campaigns and minor nations as separate DLC packs that they would bundle them together in one large expansion to make it worth my money.
I don't think many people hate CA it's just that it feels like some of their games are rushed resulting in an unoptimized mess and then they inflate their games with a bunch of pointless overpriced DLC.

The rowers are facing backwards as they row forwards, that's fairly typical. The rest seem to be watching their retreat.

The museum doesn't run the game/battle itself. Creative Assembly did that "re-enacting" the battle. The video is then shown at the museum.
what is a 2000 bucks pc for CA? for that kind of high level markenting, set a 6700 and 1080 an run it of extreme for the visitors. That demo battle with 30 ships? make it bigger, make the visitor feel the battle.

Either way, Rome 2's system is more cinematic than realistic. If you want boring battles maybe you should develop your own Roman Empire simulator; then we can all sit back and make fun of it for being boring.

Yes, let's have an unsuccessful historical title rather than a successful fantasy one, because of reasons.
unsuccessful because they cant make collision and a proper mechanics. Empire and shogun 2 was the last great tittle from TW, now they are like stones, rolling down the road.

I think people overestimate Total What's historical accuracy. First of all (obviously) The scale is way off for most of the conflicts that it portrays. Second of all the more recent games seem to be more focused on the look of certain things than actual historical or practical use of things. also the AI doesn't really take into account the fact that many weapons that they portray are used very differently than they show, for instance spearmen will just run towards enemy swordsmen, and will not fight In groups. And cavalry can actually defeat densely packed infantry formations in close combat, despite there possibly being three infantrymen facing the enemy's one cavalryman. The funny thing about the spear thing is that what should happen is portrayed by when an infantry unit collides with a pike block. The infantry must parry a spear, then get as close as possible to the enemy and kill 'im (of course assuming it is spear vs sword).

Just because it has the 2nd most played currently on multiplayer doesn't mean it's going to get an update. The game is 3 years old, CA isn't going to update Rome 2. When Attila was released was the point when Rome wasn't going to receive anymore content or changes. CA has 2 Total War teams, 1 for historical, which they are currently working on the next game, and the fantasy team, which is working on Warhammer. Rome 2 is over.

ThaSoulz He's a really cool guy and all but I don't think his voice fits for this. Maybe if he wrote something out and read it while he did his Battle of Canne series it would have sounded better. He kinda studders a lot. Someone like Historia Civilis would be better suited.

Great to see Total War make collaboration with museums! Many of us playing your games are also interested in military history and history in general. I remember when RTW was used in Timecommanders and various other history shows to depict battles of the ancient era. I like what I'm seeing here, it reminds me of that.
So many comments that are stupid. They aren't making a game with a 3 for a while so shut up about Rome and Medieval 3. Shut up about Total War: Game of Thrones, they need permission to do it, plus I bet most of you asking for it were the people saying Warhammer was a bad idea because it's a fantasy setting. Empire 2 is most likely the next game, it hasn't had a sequel and the big Total War TH-camrs want one so it only makes sense for it. I'm not a CA/Sega White Knight, or some random guy who has an eternal hatred for CA after Rome 2. I'm just a guy who wants Total War to become good again, and in tired of people asking for games that will never happen or not for a very long time. no medieval 3 is probably the closest on the chopping block the game is very old and could defiantly use a new coat of paint with the age of Charlemagne expansion to Attila already putting in some groundwork on the idea. so yes Medieval 3 is without a doubt one of the ones that's far closer than the other games to getting a new installment. , it's either that, a new total war in a period they haven't done before, or possibly empire 2.

+Kyler Green CA said no game is going to have a 3 for many years. Medieval 2 is old but still one of the best, and in my opinion the best, Total War game. Medieval doesn't need a sequel. Empire on the other hand hasn't had a sequel and needs one to replace the horrible mess it was on launch. Age of Charlemagne was a cash grab, they know we want something Medieval, so they took the time of the foundation of the Medieval, shoved copy paste units and such. Age of Charlemagne was a DLC for Attila which is probably in first or second for copy paste units, so they carried it over to the DLC for more cash. Even if they ignored what they stated and made Medieval 3, it would be one of the worst games, CA would add it's horrible province system from Rome 2, battles would be too fast and boring, AI for both battles and campaign would be garbage, sieges could use the worst system yet from Warhammer, you would get 4 or 5 factions with some effort and the rest would be DLC for 10-15$.

Should have used a mod or edited the ship model files, those imperial shields on the Roman ships look silly, as usual, but this being for a museum its pretty ridiculous.
I like going to museums.
God this makes me wish Rome 2 was remastered with a mix of Attila's siege progression and Warhammers updated engine.
