This is interesting, this variation is actually a false cut and you shoot a random card :) Originally the Hot Shot was designed to be a bottom card production, but this could be very useful in magic & cardistry as well! Thanks for sharing.
Idk why he made the cutting so difficult. Just do your charlier cut but the half that is against your thumb just keep that half there and drop the other deck in hands. Then place your index. You dont have to try and hold half the deck with middle finger ring finger and pinky. Kinda dumb lol. Just drop that half wrap your index over it drop top half with thumb and do the rest

Everytime I try to do the shot I just keep bending the card .
Any tips to get it to shoot?

Try the school of cardistry version. You’ll just have to do a knuckle cut instead of a thumb cut.
I would if I could but I'm stuck only being able to to the knuckle cut because of my small hands
