Right there with you on affinity for watermelon. Have had a good year growing in a raised bed. Variety recommendation - Yellow Doll. I have 10 Yellow Doll watermelons sizing up on two plants. We’re probably a week out from harvest 🤞🏼
Heard a farmer say to check for a good tan or brownish area on the bottom of the watermelon or to have two finger space between the stripes on the melons. We are in zone 9 - central Florida.
I’ve had lackluster watermelons and cantaloupes the last 3 seasons… just bland.. rain issues got my melons and tomatoes again! If you follow Millennial Gardner, he has a “frame” of 4x4 posts around his garden with cables for his tomatoes and other veggies going vertical but also for sun shades across the top like a tent.. I’m going that route along with some tarps before big rain storms.. attempting to curb the sky water! East ARKANSAS.
Those eyes are beautiful!!! Our watermelon are just now coming on the vine. Another month or so and they are the smaller ones. I have 5 plants in an old wheelbarrow and they are growing rather well now.
Something that can go wrong (that I just learned today!) is that an animal can steal your entire (unripe!) watermelon! I think the culprit was a coyote. Not sure how to protect the rest of the melons. Quite disappointing. It was my largest of my mini watermelons:(
@@thebeginnersgarden Thanks, Jill. I just put mesh fencing around the grow bags+vertical cattle panel that they were growing up on. Hopefully that'll keep them out. Fingers crossed.
Thank you. SE Tx. Last season I had underripe and overripe, a few that were perfect. Hopefully this year is my year!
Blessings!

Oh no! I’ve had squirrels get into my cantaloupe but usually the watermelons are too tough for critters I’ve had. So sorry this happened!
