Irrelevant stat, I love his red card record, I love defenders like him and Materaazi or midfielders like Keane and Guttosso who’d die on the pitch for there team. His genuine defending is second to none especially in big games like champions league finals. Even chiellini agrees. I can’t speak for before 2005 but he’s the best of my generation in my opinion.

I too like players that give there all the same way but I don't like hot heads who get sent off one too many times. People often under appreciate just how good Roland Koeman actually was. Purely on defending alone, one of the best CB’s in history but the fact he has 252 goals and 71 assist in 763 games is insane for a CB.

Cannavaro almost single-handedly managed to keep the final World Cup match tied against an unbelievably powerful French attack. If it wasn’t for him, they wouldn’t have ended in penalties and France would’ve beat Italy at least 3-1.

But Nesta was surely on another level: he was the best Italian CB of all time, second only to Baresi. It was not a case that we won the Champions League of 2003 against Juventus after having bought him. Unfortunately, his career was mined by injuries; despite this, Nesta was a truly beast.

Among the Italians, I prefer Baresi and Nesta *as centre-backs*. Maldini for me is the best overall Italian defender because he also was a hell of a left-back. If we're talking about the whole world, Beckenbauer is my overall choice by far.

Ronald Koeman isn’t given much credit but he is one of the highest scoring defenders, while being an absolute defender. He is a type of player which many try to emulate but fail either in offense or defence. His managerial career aside, as a player, that man was something.
