  • Arch Linux frequently sparks debate. While some deem it overly complex, others praise its tailor-made nature. Arch itself has not been featured on this channel before. It's high time to delve into the original Arch Linux in 2024. Let's kick things off.

I have installed Arch Linux a few times, and only using the archinstall script. It was a good experience, but in the end I found that much of the internal infrastructure I got from other distributions was worth more to me. I am running Fedora 40.

Fedora is the only distro i never had problems with. Also works great on my t440p.

I personally like Debian. I've always liked it. I say if people like Arch, they should use it, but be prepared for a learning curve more than the usual Linux experience. I don't do AAA gaming on my PC, so I don't need the latest and greatest video drivers, so stable works just fine for me. The only thing I replaced that quite honestly needed a more up-to-date version was Wine. Other than that, I use flatpaks, appimages or the default stuff in the repos.

Well I use Arch ... I have custom scripts that help me to install arch on any machines just within minutes ... I really like arch linux .... Because it gives me freedom for everything and everything is present in a vanilla form without any bloat or anything .... whereas to the system breakages.... I barely have faced any .... I do use BTRFS and keep backups if things go south .... even in some instances I have not regularly updated my pc ... In some case up-to 6 months ... apart from pgp keys expiring and few replacement packages haven't faced any issues .... I don't know people say that Arch is very unstable unusable ... It surely is usable and not that unstable... Infact, I find it easy to install then Debian at times thanks to arch wiki

As an Arch user this video confused me, it sounded like you were describing a different distro for half the video. IDK if you spent enough time "in it" to make this review truly coherent. Like the AUR literally has Arch in the name, it's recommended over and over on the wiki, it's always been officially part of the distro, but "aur-helpers" designed to compile programs for the repository for you instead of you using the Arch build system "makepkg" directly are what is not supported.

No they don't, they literally say on the wiki "Use at your own risk"

8:25 You can significantly improve pacman speed by enabling parallel downloads

Yes, you can set that in zypp.conf. But despite loadballancing on the mirror servers, Zypper remains behind Pacman in terms of speed.

I've been using Arch Linux for more than 5 years. I'm using it for everything that is not specifically gaming, for this I'm booting into Windows. But I rarely do that these days honestly. TH-cam is as wild as I get.
I'm a software engineer, so maybe I'm not your average user, but in my experience the system never breaks from updates and I'm personally never scared to update my system, even when there's something important coming up the next day. But again maybe I'm not your average user. I have a pretty thin selection of core apps/programs that I need to get my system up and running on a new installation and I don't really install a lot of things outside of that. At least not invasive programs like gaming apps can be, so maybe I'm just dodging a whole pile of issues by avoiding all that.
I wouldn't really recommend Arch to anyone new to Linux or not interested in learning Linux or not wanting to heavily configure and customize their OS. In that sense I view it as a pretty niche OS that I personally love, but wouldn't really recommend to anyone. I don't even recommend it to colleagues. Basically only when there's another Arch linux user, we may talk about how much we like it, but beyond that, no not really. And the reason is that I spent all this time configuring it to my liking, but no way in hell am I going to explain all those things to someone else or put myself in a situation where I have to help them debug issues because they're trying to achieve the same thing or do things my way. It's a journey you travel alone. LOL.

I used arch from like 2010 to 2014, and IDK if this is still the case, but everytime I did a full system upgrade, it would be like 1-2 hours of work to fix stuff that broke (pacman would normally call out what needed to change -- e.g. you need to reconfigure X config file as the format has changed). I also found that every two years or so, my system would just become totally busted and I would need to reinstall.
There were several things I loved about arch. The AUR made installing stuff not in the main repo easier than any other repo by a mile. The Arch Wiki and support forum were insanely good. And everything in the OS follows standard practices -- in 'simpler' distros like ubutnu/fedora, it can be a pain finding configs/ect... but in arch, everything was in /etc or wherever you'd expect it.
Running Arch was fun as a college student, and def taught me a lot about nix systems, but unless you are developing linux system tools and want to have everything bleeding edge all the time to test with, not sure what the benefit is.

@@smnt Again, I've been using it for at least the past 5 years and I've not had any such experiences. I can't say what the experience was back then in 2010-2014, but it's definitely not like that now. Like I said, my system just never breaks from an update. This is what I hear other Arch users' experience is like also, so I think it's simply not true that it just randomly breaks.

Arch is for people who want to play with Linux not get actual work done or depend on their computer. Its a toy, nothing else. The arch "community" is a cancer in the Linux world.
I've used arch off and on for years and currently have it on a laptop. I've installed it the arch way and with scripts. As a daily driver its not. Look to distros like Linux Mint, Zorin OS , Ubuntu or Fedora for that.
And yes, I know in the comments there are gonna be ppl saying how they have been on arch for 10 years and never had it crash...lol Right.....

@@dragonballjiujitsu it does... some updates fuck up your system because you made a major mistake. So being able to fix it with basic commands is pretty much always possible.
